This episode is the only time where I understand and agree with Mako and the President more than I do Korra. Like Korra obviously has every right to be frustrated and upset with the President. She has her family and the whole South Pole counting on her to get troops to aid them and he isn’t helping her despite her telling him all the wrongs Unalaq has done. However taking Varricks’s advice and trying to get HIS troops involved with a war behind his back doesn’t even remotely sound like a good idea. Him and the rest of the United Republic would be the face of any wrong move and it could possibly result in another huge war. It wasn’t right of Mako to blindside her like that, but you have to also ask yourself if he had told her it was a bad idea, would she have listened?

Not only that, but point blank: If you want someone to violate their personal code for you, you need to tell them ahead of time. Korra had no right to expect Mako to assist her in what he considers to be a mistake just because. She should've tried to get him on her side instead of yelling at him because he wasn't. Same thing with Raiko, honestly.

Personally I find Mako to be totally in the right to be honest about what he knows. Firstly, Bolin's mistake for telling Mako about sketchy activity. Never put friends of family in authority in that kind of position. Secondly, whatever Korra's doing was schemed by Varrick, and we're seriously not about to say that Varrick has the moral high-ground here. Just because Korra's the avatar doesn't mean everyone has to go along with whatever unsavory ideas she has. If she wants to beat them up for it whatever, but then there goes the whole "peacekeeper" persona. And as far as her being his "girlfriend", puh-lease. A job is far more likely to last longer and be more stable that a teenaged significant other. Lastly, it's not like Mako went to volunteer information of his own desire. He would've kept the secret if he weren't asked directly. Honestly watch Korra go to the fire nation to ask for help and Izumi's like "SCREW YOU AND YOUR WAR". It's simply something Korra must deal with in another way.

Honestly I think that Mako’s decision to tell the president was right. For one reason, the president was pressuring him to do so with his “you are under an oath” which is true. If he kept information that would immediately make him a corrupt cop and ruin his credibility. Plus what Korra is doing is against the law and something that is even against avatar ideals. She does not have any order over the ENTIRE army of the *Republic Nations*. SEVERAL nations. When Aang got the support of armies it was by the own accord of their leaders, AND they were in the middle of a 100 year war. The north and the south is barely at the beginning of one, and it is one that so far only directly involves the north and south. And while the president is a jerk, he is right that they cannot just send armies to support the south. Their at the very beginning of war, and they don’t want to start an even bigger one.

Mako was right in telling Raiko, for once he had a job instead of sleeping in the streets or in the probending building, he knew Korra was acting without thinking so he did the right thing. Getting the United Forces, which are under Raiko's command, to interfere in the war would get Republic City into the war, at a time in which the city is recovering from Amon and it's having its first president, it really shouldn't get involved in a war unless there's no other option, and Raiko was analyzing the options and wanted to reach an agreement without going to war. You don't go to war unless it's necessary, Korra just saw the occupation and thought "hmm the only option is to obliterate them with an army". In this season Korra reacts very emotionally which makes sense because she discovered Tenzin and her dad lied to her, and then the only guy who trusted her to do things was actually using her and then the water tribes went to war and she's worried about her parents. It's a lot of trouble and she wants to fix it, but she's not doing it right and poor Mako, he's had enough because Korra prefers to think about herself being right instead of questioning her own methods. And of course she'll learn and improve about this issue and become a better avatar throughout the rest of the series. I love this show.
@AStrangeWindmill3 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. Korra is in full panic mode because she _did_ trust Unaloq over her own family, and when that blew up in her face she _did_ start the war to get them out of the mess she helped put them in, and she needs herself to fix it more than anything else. This is happening because she screwed up in the earlier episodes, and she is so heated because nobody else is acting like they are personally responsible for what happens next. *spoiler* There's a reason that Korra appears as a frightened, lonely, child in the spirit world.

Groaning at Mako for telling the President about korra's plan to sneak around his back to talk to Iroh, like; imagine if she'd actually done it. Think about how MASSIVELY she'd screw up the credibility of the government of Republic City if a private individual, avatar or not, can just ignore their directives and basically hire a national army for themselves. Then imagine what it would have been like for the United Forces to actually show up at the civil war; talk about escalation, and way to show the entire world a complete lack of neutrality by both the avatar and the republic. And on a side note; if it was later discovered that Mako had known and deliberately not reported it; that'd be it for his job. Mako was right to say it was a terrible idea, and doubly right to report it.

Also illegally acquiring a military battalion is really a bad idea in the first place ngl.

I agree with Mako that their idea was terrible. And I agree that eh made the right thing to tell the president. Just because she’s his girlfriend or the avatar doesn’t mean he follows her blindly??? even when it’s gonna risk people’s lives??? Its understandable that Korra would feel so impulsive to make a move given her nature and the personal connection she has to the conflict but the fact that Bolin and Asami and Varrick just used that chance to capitalize on the conflict really rubs me the wrong way everytime. All Asami thought about was her company and all Varrick thought about was making money and all Bolin thought about was being in the spotlight. Literally only Mako put any personal issues or needs aside and tried to look for the root of the problem to try and tackle this without risking lives and lunching into war. I feel like many reactors’ bais towards which characters they like more blinds them to some character’s behavior where it becomes like certain characters can do no wrong and others even when they’re right are still written off.

Although I don’t like Raiko later on, here I’d say he’s being a pretty decent president (by that he’s doing what you’d expect). He doesn’t confirm everything with Korra, since being the Avatar she is too high profile to be trusted with his own views, and he only says stuff which shows that he is trying to be neutral until concrete evidence comes. Cutting to his meeting to Lin, he then asks about the Northerners specifically, showing that he secretly believes or shares suspicions with Korra. Whether or not this is the case, he can’t go out and try to criticise a seemingly legitimate cultural and political leader without evidence. Then with Mako, he’s straight with him, but at the same time deliberately ordering his knowledge of him so that he appears as a cop first, Korra’s boyfriend second. And at that point, Mako is unsure himself what he is: he loves his work and he loves Korra but at the moment only the former actually gave him joy. Raiko doesn’t even ask. He just reminds Mako of who he has chosen to be.

I find it weird how eager a lot of people who watch this season seem to be for a random unelected person to get to command a giant army with no oversight. Like obviously we're watching the show and we know that Korra is in the right, but in-universe it makes total sense that the President isn't willing to declare a war at her request.

It's a common thing in superhero stories. You think people would be cool with a Jeff Bezos suiting up and roaming Seattle sending every drug dealer he finds to the hospital they can't afford? No, but people love Batman.

That is certainly true. I personally don't like Raiko, but I understand some of the decisions he makes in this episode. That said, the decisions he makes later in this Book, and in Books 3 and 4, and the comics is where I start having issues with him, but we're too early in the reaction series to bring those up in detail.

Mako was right to tell the President about Varrick and Korra's plan. It sucks that he had to betray them like that, but what they were doing was asking the United Republic Forces and General to basically defy orders and engage in warfare that they didn't have permission to engage in. I'm pretty sure that's a serious issue and probably an actual crime. Pres. Raiko was in the wrong, for sure, but so were Korra and Varrick. Mako was in an impossible situation and if one thing's for sure about Mako, it's that he tries to have the right answer and make the right choice. Confusing or shades of gray situations are hard for Mako.

19:55 It's the trolly problem basically, as far as I see it. Mako put the potential "lives of the many" before his girlfriend. There is potential for mass destruction in the information that Mako holds, shouldn't he lose his job if he withheld that from them? What has the potential for more harm, him telling or not. I think that him not telling has, no?

I think the hard part about this story is that korra isn't just the avatar here. Her people are the victims of a literal holy way. Its hard to be neutral like that. No body would have wanted aang to stand by during the fire nation invasion. No one would have asked for him to be neutral. Or is occupation not worth fighting against for your people? Or even for balance of the world? Or is it different because its in between people of the same element?

I don't get why people say that Korra has to remain neutral in a conflict like this. Like, no she really doesn't. One nation invaded another. They're both water tribe, sure, but they are separate nations with their own governance and traditions and rules. Aang didn't have to remain neutral when the Fire Nation invaded, because that clearly upset the balance. So would the North taking over the South. It would be like saying that (mild spoilers) in season 4 Korra should have just let the Earth Kingdom sort things out itself, and shouldn't have picked a side.

I have a lot of issues with Mako in the first two seasons, but I actually completely agree with him in this episode. No one was listening to him (including Korra), and Korra and Varrick's idea was way out of line.
@crystalwang15323 жыл бұрын
I felt like he could have used a different rationale tho since he turned around and hired some triple threats (working with and hiring gang members)to do some dirty work right after he was like “Korra, you can’t do illegal things”.
@hurleyp63 жыл бұрын
@@crystalwang1532 in fairness though he didn't hire them to do anything illegal. He paid them essentially for security work. It's a fairly high pressure situation since you'd be causing another nation (or is it just a city state for now?) to enter a war and escalating the situation. Plus he's a cop and being directly questioned by the President. For this episode, at least, I'm totally on Mako's side.
@crystalwang15323 жыл бұрын
Pete Hurley But going behind your girlfriends back to rat her out to the president knowing full well that doing so would practically mean killing her whole family and tribe…that’s a dick move. Especially when your girlfriend is the avatar. He essentially said “my job as a beat cop is more important than the lives of your family, your fellow tribespeople, and you entire southern culture, not to mention your trust”
@jojogarlin83693 жыл бұрын
@@crystalwang1532 No it wouldn’t be killing her whole tribe and family. If Korra went through with getting Iroh’s army it would spiral out of control and involve replubic city in this war and would become a full blown world war. Involving the United Forces in the building conflict between the North and the South could pretty much only have disasterous consequences. The president was correct in trying to attempt diplomatic means of resolving the issue, as is only correct for the leader of what is essentially supposed to be a politically neutral organization like the Republic. It wasn’t the right move and Korra hasn’t really listened to reason this entire season so trying to talk this out wouldn’t have done much to change her mind

Honestly I think Mako was in the right in talking to the president in this case. Yeah, his gf is the Avatar BUT she is essentially commiting a war crime by trying to rally troops to attack who she believes is responsible for the bombing. Mako has pretty decent evidence to warrant questtioning the involvement of the North in the bombing, but Korra refuses to listen to him, she is letting her emotions get in the way of rational thinking. Sure she can be angry, and want to fight the North, but, refusing to listen to evidence because it doesn't go with the narrative you believe in is actually a bad trait for the Avatar to have. At the very least, this situation isn't very black and white, there is a lot of grey area mixed in which is why i like TLOK. I just think you guys were being too harsh to Mako in this specific scene/episode. He finally did a "good thing" in that scene but i guess because of previous crappy things, it's hard for us to see it properly?
@alexschwarz47493 жыл бұрын
So much this, very well put.
@ANP96233 жыл бұрын
@@alexschwarz4749 thank you! At the end of the day Korra is using the bombings reason to rally troops and not the actual injustices that are occuring in the South. There is already enough evidence to suggest maybe someone other than the north is responsible so as the Avatar that needs to be looked at properly.
@TheSaxAppeal9 ай бұрын
Also, think of the consequences of the people of the world finding out that the Avatar committed a war crime. Not only would it ruin Korra's reputation as an individual person, it would ruin the Avatar's reputation as a whole and probably spark several more Equalist-like movements throughout the world. And think of the struggles future Avatars would have to deal with if she succeeded.

I don't blame Mako. He grew up on the streets and even ran with gangs for a while before pro-bending. Now that he has a stable job on the right side of the law where he can be seen as useful and necessary, he wants to keep it. He could be fired for going against the law and disobeying the government. PLUS, I am SURE that to Mako, being a corrupt cop that goes against the law makes him feel like a criminal again, which is the last thing he wants to be. He regrets that part of his life and only did it so he and Bolin didn't die hungry on the streets. He ALSO knows the North didn't bomb the embassy, so while he cares about Korra and the South, he knows he can't just blame everything on the North and think that all the problems will get solved. I feel for Korra and I want her uncle gone, but Mako has a point and a perspective that deserves to be heard out.

I feel like Mako got it a bit harsh. From his perspective, he knows Korra has a tendency to be headstrong in her decision making, and he believes there is an exterior threat to Republic city (the bombers). So letting Korra weaken the integrity and security of Republic city isn’t necessarily the right thing. He betrayed her trust, but she actively was doing things that were in direct conflict with his work. Also, Korra time and time again just does things her way, and hates being told no. Mako would have to sacrifice all of his integrity if he went along with everything Korra wants
@jayblack69853 жыл бұрын
Am I the only one that actually isn’t mad at all about Mako telling the president about the plan? For one, it’s literally trying to manipulate an entire army based on personal feelings and lack of evidence when presented with evidence, and two it’s war. So many people could die and so much after shock could happen to so many other nations. Korra being the avatar (a hot headed one at that who has no experience in solving political and civil issues) doesn’t overwrite all of that and being his girlfriend doesn’t overwrite the weight of literal war.
