Comet tails don't always just follow behind the comet itself. The tail (or one of them at least) points away from the sun due to solar wind.

SQ1VGA was my very first Space Quest game. It introduced me to the series, so I have nothing but love for it. Its actually my second favourite in the franchise after SQ5. I understand why the creators act the way they do, but that won't change that I think it had great art, a fantastic soundtrack, and an amazing story to boot. Loved the puzzles as well.

Steam does have both versions. The best way to get it to work with MT-32, use ScummVM and direct it to your steam folder and look for the space quest games. There are two folders, I believe the "Legacy Collection" is the one that has the VGA. I know its backwards, but Steam gives you an option to install either version in it's game options.

I love SQ1 VGA. We got it with our soundblaster back in the day. Notably I was blown away by the music (thanks Ken). The title sequence is still by far one of my favs and is easily the best of the SQ themes. I actually liked the art style and especially all the animated death sequences. I have fond memories of playing this with friends just to show off the death scenes, particularly the acid rain "I'm melting" scene. For whatever reason I thought the Castle in the "wrong button" death was the one from King's Quest and I was eagerly anticipating the VGA remake of KQ1... poor naive 8 year old me.

The first time I played, I thought it was King's Quest, too! Except the text box clearly states otherwise. Weird plug to throw into a Space Quest game, though. We'll get to the acid deaths in the next episode, don't you worry. :)

I know I'm a heretic, but I actually really liked the SQ1 Remake. Although the art style is kind of weird, it doesn't bother me at all, and I absolutely HATE Sierra's AGI engine, so any remake that gets rid of that awful engine is automatically an improvement. in my book While I do understand that it was messed up of Sierra to remake SQ1 with no influence from the 2 Guys, I also can understand the reasoning from a marketing perspective, as Sierra wanted to release all of the VGA remakes as close together as possible, and considering how closely SQ1 and SQ4 were released, it would have been really hard on the Two Guys to develop both games simultaneously. That having been said, I do agree that the Two Guys should have had more influence in the IP that they created. At least its more true to the heart of the series than Magna Cum Laude or Box Office Bust were to Leisure Suit Larry! Also, I checked both the manuals for the 15th Anniversary SQ Collection as well as the SQ Collection Series, and both manuals contain the SQ1 and SQV Copy Protection as part of the manual (the collection series also included SQ6's Copy Protection as well). Maybe it was just the European releases that didn't include them? Anyways, I happen to have an extra copy of the SQ Collection Series manual, if you need me to ever send it to you. Just let me know! Looking forward to more!

I can't remember which Collection it was that shipped without copy protection -- it might have been a digital release, actually. All I know is Sierra themselves put the copy protection information on their website so downloading the copy protection is not considered piracy anymore. Also, I may have been a bit unclear: my copies of the Collections as well as my copy of SQ1VGA *did* come with all the copy protection information; I've just been a real goober and lost them. Thank you for the offer. If you don't need the extra copy I'll happily take you up on the offer.

I really love this version. I would argue that it actually does update the original's puzzles in three important ways: 1.) The widget lets you cheat at the slots. I don't think the slots are fun in either version of the game, but at least here you don't have to savescum. 2.) The skimmer sequence is skippable, easier, and even kind of fun. And 3.) If you neglect to view the cartridge on Kerona, there's a computer on the Deltaur you can use to get the self-destruct code, averting one dead end. These three updates make the game a lot more fun to me, and I also love the music and the Buck Rogers-style art (my questionable taste notwithstanding, I wouldn't have wanted any other games in the series to use that style). Now two things about this version that really bug me are the fact that the dialect translator is just called a gadget and never explicitly revealed to be a translator, and the autonav data about Kerona is cut. Also, I think you can no longer hide in the trunk on the Deltaur, but I'm not sure.

#TeamVGA but seriously, this game made space quest more accessible since the text parser and no sound were a hard sell in the 90s with the move to ~Multimedia~ For that it gets my thumbs up.

Certainly parser games were more or less considered extinct dinosaurs at this time but it still begs the question why they went with this rather odd style when SQ4 was being developed concurrently.

12:09 This part is really worth listening to in PC Speaker mode. The SQ1VGA music is great, but I feel that in places its MIDI version has some orchestration errors, like it almost sounds like voices were dropped due to a limit on the maximum number of simultaneous voices (though I don't think that was the case). In this part especially, there is a melody that I feel is drastically de-emphasized (perhaps by having the wrong timbre / having its notes run into each other instead of being properly separated), and deserves to be emphasized instead (like it is in the PC Speaker version) and cleaned up a bit.

The soundtrack is definitely a highlight! As is the 'death-cam', as it takes the mocking to the 'next level'. I really don't mind the wacky 'buck rogers' vibe, in a weird way, it kinda fit, and Josh Mandel's additions are great [as always]...it just needed more of that self-deprecating cynicism that only Scott Murphy could provide!

They did copy some of the text from the original but that was before Scott really came into his own as a writer. So, yeah, most of the extra writing here is from Josh Mandel. I have to say he did a damn fine job "emulating" the style of the first Space Quest games, though.

@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 4 жыл бұрын
Right, moving the cursor up to the icon bar pauses the game and lets the sound effect play all the way through instead of being cut off by the next sound effect. This was back when games could only play one digital sample at a time. Kind of similar: I used to do the same thing in Space Quest IV to pause the game when the Latex Babes take Roger to the Galaxy Galleria, so I could listen to that awesome "going shopping" music without having it be cut off by the next cutscene.

I had no idea that the two guys were not involved in this version, that really changes my perspective on things. One thing I have to agree with you on is the music, I thought the soundtrack was amazing. The opening theme is epic, the ZZ Top music rocked, and the atmospheric music worked with the environments. That said there are a few other things I like about it besides the music. Some of the jokes are really funny, such as the How he blew it cam, which, knowing what I know now, probably pissed off the two guys by using their characters. I also like being able to skip the arcade sequence and the help they gave for the slots o death. The references in the droid shop were also pretty funny to me.

I enjoy this version for what Joss Mandel's adds; world building and humor - ahh, of course it was him saving the day again - but it does stick out like a sore, retro obsessed - yet very pretty - thumb. And it had some improvements, like the Magnet and having to hide from the troops. It really depends on my mood on if I fee like accepting this a "real" space quest entry - it's not the only odd one out after all. However, It is a big black mark against it that it messes with the time travel graphics joke of SQ4 - *what a waste of VGA!* lol - and knowing Joss and Mark were working on that gag without knowing this was going on behind their backs makes it all the worse. Maybe it was Sierra's IP, but the decent thing would be to be upfront about it - Ken - maybe he wanted their attention on their job, or else it was payback for slipping him in as an easter egg in the EGA version.

That it does Dan. SQ1VGA tried to acknowlege the time travel by showing the time pod arrive just a Roger leaves, but really it just emphasizes the contradiction. Also, if it happened like that then the guy who's ship Roger accidentally stole should have been there to get in Roger's face when he time traveled in. This is why you should let your separate space quest projects collaborate!

This was my first Space Quest game when I was only a kid, so I naturally have a lot of nostalgia for it. The parallels with the original Star Wars certainly made me like it more. But hey, to its credit, I was never turned off from the other games (or Sierra games in general), I was GLAD there were more. Plus, aside from some moments in the game itself, that "slug" alien (the one who appears to have blown in from Santa Cruz) on the box cover used to scare the crap outta me. That mouth. XD And personally speaking - and absolutely no disrespect to the original - but I always found this version a tad funnier. The death sequences with the silly music and icons popping up, the narration having a bit more snark to it...I just personally found it ever so slightly funnier. And lord knows the narration is better when read in the late great Gary Owens' voice. (Though what narration isn't?)

Fortunately, the Steam version of the Space Quest collection does now have both versions if you want to play the weird VGA version. Space quest 1 was the second game I ever played (the first one being SQ3), and I knew that one so well that when I discovered the 1991 version decades later, it felt... off. All the shiny, spacey, science-fictionny stuff was replaced by goofy things, and as much I loved the SQ series for its humor, the design here was too far from the original for me to like it. Anyway, thank you for your videos, I am currently trying to make my first own game with AGS and your tutorials proved very helpful !

I always thought the green alien on the monitors in the Arcadia was a Sarien spouting out orders or telling BS lies to whatever is left of the crew...
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 6 жыл бұрын
You really think that's meant to be Sludge on the monitor? Sludge may change between blue and Caucasian sometimes, but he's never been green. I thought it was just meant to be a high ranking Sarien - because that's what they look like - but it's odd the next monitor with (I think) the same guy says it's a news anchor reporting on the Arcada's attact (how would they know already?). But speaking of old Sludge bucket: do you think the scientist who told you to save the plans is Sludge's brother, Slash Vohoul? If I remember right, the idea for Sludge wasn't developed until SQ2, and maybe he was meant to be the same guy, but they messed up his name, or something. It's all a little vague, but as Slash seemed intent on keeping the plans in safe hands (or at least the government's) it seems to make more sense that there are/were two Vohauls. Any chance on clearing this up?
@spacequesthistorian
@spacequesthistorian 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Slash was meant to be Sludge's brother. Sludge was the "black sheep" of the family. He developed the Star Generator as a weapon and got really upset when they wanted to use it to save lives rather than destroy them -- especially since his brother was one of those advocating for its alternate use. None of this was ever explained in any of the games, though. As for the green dude in this game, you're right, it might just be a Sarien commander. We'll never know.
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 6 жыл бұрын
Good, that aligns alright with my head canon. I'm just curious if you think the guy that got Roger to save the plans, then died, was Slash himself? Or just a lead scientist for the Arcada and Slash is potentially still alive on Xenon? I've always felt there could be some great story here that would flesh out Sludge and a character.

I would add back from the mid 1980s to the 1990s. The difference between the old computer to a new on in 5 years was a huge change. There was no nostalgia for AGI when there was a VGA display at your beck and call. The graphics at the time no matter the style were amazing. If you really want to see the difference try playing space quest 1 in CGA.

This version of the game has a special place in my heart. I agree that the 1950s aesthetic isn't right for Space Quest. It was disappointing for me to learn that the 2 guys weren't the creators of this game, as I always assumed back in the day. But this is the version that I owned. I never actually owned a copy of the AGI version. Not sure why. But this version gives me nostalgic memories of my teenagehood. And yes, the music is amazing.

Oh, I have many nostalgic feels for this game, too. I never knew what a shitshow it was back in the day when I played it over and over again. It wasn't until I started talking to Scott Murphy that the true nature of the beast revealed itself to me - and since then I've never been able to look at it quite the same.

Thinking on the art direction, Space Quest always leaned more towards a Star Wars/Star Trek design philosophy, didn't it?

I always got a retro futurism feel from the original Space Quest tetralogy in both how the world looked and the design ethic, so I can't bring myself to hate the art style here. However I feel it could have gone for something more along the lines of a 50's sci-fi movie instead of looking like something straight out of The Jetsons.

I don't think this was that bad, but then again I had no idea that it was hated by Scott Murphy.

It was the whole "made behind our backs" thing that rubbed him the wrong way. And also that they put him in the credits as if he was actually involved in the project.

Just heard how you managed to get the game installed, and it makes me thankful I've got not only the SQ Collection CD which has 1 to 5, but also SQ6. Oh and original floppy disks for 1 to 5 as well... And a plethora of old computers (still got my 286 from when I played SQ1 for the first time!) to play them all on. Ok sorry about gloating, that was horrid.

Sooo now that you’ve hit 2500 subs, are you going to play a Kings Quest game? Or were the recent charity streams all you could handle? 😂

I'll admit I was a bit intrigued with KQ6 but I don't think I could stomach playing through the whole thing on camera. The original plan was just to play a single game for a single video, anyway. 😅

Space Quest Historian Kings Quest 6 is definitely my favourite. Love your insight on all these games though. Learn something new each time.

Haha. "Insight" ... I think my reactions to KQ weren't really that insightful. I was just doing it mostly for laughs, to be honest. But thank you, I do appreciate that. 😅

When this game came out, I really was hoping they’d remake 2 and 3 as well. I never got my wish. And don’t tell me the fan remake counts. They took too many liberties with that, in my opinion.

Art aesthetic isn’t quite perfect for this game, I agree. But the deaths and witty dialogue really do it for me in this version. I thought they hit that part of it out of the park.

Preferred the original one because that's what I grew up with, but I remember the old collection edition cds having both, so I played through it a couple times

I was only in the original. SQ1 was clearly inspired by Star Wars. The change in art style was not a good idea. It seems much more inspired by Star Trek and other series, which I like but is not faithful to the original.
