Hey Brent, the rock climbing anchor needs a carabineer between the anchor and the rope! The anchor is too sharp, and will likely damage the rope and make it unsafe, especially if you fall on it. I absolutely love all your content! Stay safe!

Christ Brent! I came here for the same reason! Please please please get yourself some proper training! I'm not saying this in an Internet hatey kind of way but you are going to get killed doing some of the stuff you're doing. Also I would never rely on just one bolt, dosent matter how good it is. Also never tie a rope through a hanger like that. Your knot is not safe either. Use a figure of eight. Also you need to use rope protectors and or Anchors mid way down to redirect the rope so it's not running over sharp edges. I have cut ropes before scarily quick absailing over sharp rock edges. You have been doing this long enough not that you should be way better on safety.

I am SO THRILLED that you got the rockhounding bug!!! I kept going bananas when you did your different explorations, and would just kind of brush by some of these rocks that you have there! You seem to have some malachite somewhere on the path where those aerial ore carts were, and you found some exciting crystals when you spent the night in the mine when you first bought it.There also seems to be Chrysacolla in many places-it is the bright blue stones on the walls, possibly. I think you could fund some of your projects that you have planned by selling some of the stones you have! Such a thrill to watch, and thank you for taking us along on your journeys.I love every episode!!!

While I agree with the other poster who mentioned using a carabiner between the anchor and rope, I feel it's reasonable to add that using more than one bolt is good safety precaution. My preference would be 3 placed about 2 ft apart. Yes it's overkill, but you only die once so it's best to avoid it.

My dude. Brent. I love your channels, I love your storytelling. I've got a Cerro Gordo pin in my collection and a patch on my backpack. So know that this is coming from a supporter who really enjoys what you do: you are going to get yourself killed. You need climbing and rappelling training, and you need it immediately. You frequently, unnecessarily put your life at risk with some of the practices you engage in while exploring the mines. And the fact that you're doing this alone makes it even more of a necessity for you to have both the proper training and the proper equipment to do what you're doing. I've been watching your first channel since its inception. I would very much like to see it continue for a long, long time, and that means keeping you alive, healthy, and whole. None of this works without you, so please stop taking unnecessary risks.

**SAFETY WARNING** Hi Brent! Always luv to see mine rappels! However, please never tie directly into a Metolious hanger...the edge is too sharp. Always use a locking carabiner to clip into the hanger, and tie the rope (figure-eight on a bite) to the carabiner. And ideally, in the rock climbing world, rapping off a 2-bolt (or 3) equalized anchor setup is best (in case one bolt breaks or pulls). Set the bolts at least a foot apart. Equalize two bolts with carabiners and webbing, so the pressure is evenly distributed to avoid shock in case one fails. That being said, in alpine mountaineering, rappelling off of one piece of pro (or one bolt) is sometimes necessary, tho rappelling off of one-piece anchors entails added risk. If it blows, then you fall. Other than that, great job on all these adventures!

10:04 - *OOOH NO NO NO! Don't do this!!* 😱😱 Attache a carabiner to the rock climbing bolt! Don't tie in directly if you fall the rope could snap due to the small bend radius! I used to play in that mine circa 1979/80. Of all the mines I have explored, Cerro Gordo is THE most dangerous mine, ever. Although some sections were fairly solid...most is fractured, crumbly, and just coming apart. Yes, it is so full of minerals it is astounding, but danger lurks there, and death. I am surprised to see that much of it still passable. Be careful, Brent. I understand the excitement of discovery, but that mine is a killer. Probably the stupidest hobby I ever got into. Exciting when we are young, but looking at that now I wouldn't crawl in 10 feet. I would never go mine spelunking alone?? edwightg is right about your anchor tie off. Carabeeners and TWO anchors is better. Now I am 70, and a little bit smarter....or am I? You are kinda nuts to do that alone. You don't seem to realize how dangerous that is? YOU need a girlfriend to stop you from being so crazy!!!!??!!! Remember the Chinese? They are still buried in there.

Brent - The enjoyment I get from watching Cerro Gordo is surpassed by my feeling that your luck will run out. I admire your courage. But you are taking foolish and unnecessary risks constantly when you're down there. You need to address your behavior and your approach to lethal activities or your story and the story of Cerro Gordo will be "In the early 2020s, a young guy bought this town with the goal of turning it into a living museum. He'd barely gotten started on his dream when he died tragically due to an easily-preventable mishap. Today nothing is left of the town." I can't even grasp the mindset of someone repeatedly taking lethal caving risks in a known-collapsed mine without even taking a climbing class. I admire your ambition, but you need to have better self-awareness of your limitations or "accidents" will keep happening to you because you can't identify your foolish behavior. You have to be better at knowing what you don't know, so that you can start to learn it.

The anchors are always double, always with special bolts and with chain and ring, the static ropes for descent are always used double, especially in these situations, use carabiners and change ropes after a certain period, the dust and splinters that enter will ruin them from the inside, they hold in static but at the slightest jerk they give way, try to tighten it as much as possible, it doesn't take much, you entrust your life to a rock bolt with a tapping block, and a knotted rope is crazy, besides the fact that it I saw them give way and luckily either they were double or there were others underneath. anyway fantastic exploration thanks for sharing greetings from Italy

Brent, I grew up doing lapidary and rock hounding with my father. That blade you have on that saw is for wood, you can tell because the teeth are so large on it. Generally, the harder the material, the smaller the teeth, until you have no teeth other than abrasives for the hardest things (like rock). They use a diamond or carbide lapidary disc for cutting stone and minerals, and generally use a lubricant like water or oil. Saws that have a reservoir that the blade runs through tend to be better, but if nothing else, you should really get that drip feed set up properly on your saw so you are not trying to cut dry. Dry cutting will over heat and destroy your blade, and kick up a bunch of dust. If you eventually get really into it, you can look into obtaining a lapidary slab saw. They are more automated, and will allow you to basically dope the rock to a block of wood, then set it to cut and walk away while it slabs it into something you cut down into cabochon pieces with your lapidary saw. You can also get a good Cabochon machine that you can accessorize with trim saws and the like.

Hey Brent, I have been cutting stones for about 15 years. If you need any help or tips let me know. I'd love to come see your home out there. The minerals in that mine are amazing. I cut stones on the same machine you were using. Diamond Pacific Genie. Great machine.

Hi Brent, as one who has done lapidary work, the blade on your saw platform is not the right type. You need a diamond blade. The one you have looks more like what one would use to cut wood...the teeth being way too big. Diamond blades aren't toothed. So, with the right blade your saw might work pretty good.

@ghosttown2 You should go back to the tunnel by the lean-to that was full of Malachite and Azurite. Those were some of the best gems I've seen on your channels and they seemed really accessible.

they make real cheap floor tile cutting wet saw tables that would cut rocks, various sizes mostly depending on budget, or swap out that toothed woodsaw blade and put a diamond stone cutting disk in.

Has a bunch of those large chunks of rock & Debris recently come crashing down ?? I thought you & Johnny went down the Jefferson quite a bit deeper the time you both went down after your “ Crew “ of helpers discovered it about a year or so back ….🤔😐. Seemed you went down a lot further on that video . Anyway stay safe as you can while repelling/ ascending in those situations. One mishap while hanging from a rope is most assured your last mishap …. Just saying . Also thanks for two videos this weekend, the one from Yesterday with Jason from Mt Baker was pretty cool , especially once you got into the explanation of why all that lumber was needed . Looking forward to eventually making my way back up to Your town as last time I was there was when Robert was caretaker & I still have my pictures from that trip along with some cool pics of the original All American hotel ( about broke my heart too when you released the video about it burning down 😢). Glad to see the new replacement is making decent progress & looking forward to seeing you and your town again in near future in next year or less hopefully. Until then , Carry on As usual Brent ! 😎👍

Brent - love the channels and the content! I have to agree with others though when it comes to your safety. Yes - there will be some initial setup time when adding anchors and implementing other safety measures, but it will all be worth it in the end. I was a wildland FF back in the day and I taught others to use chainsaws. I always told my new sawyers “slow is safe, safe is smooth, smooth is fast.” I can’t take credit for that and I may have butchered the original phrase but the heart remains. Take the time to learn your craft, gain experience, and focus on safety. Eventually the safety becomes second nature and the speed will come without even trying. I also wanted point out that it is not only your life that is at risk when you go on these explorations. Who will take care of Cerro Gordo if you get too injured to do so, or if you die? Who else has the drive and passion for Cerro Gordo that you do? You care about the history of the place and it shows. Who’s to say the next owner won’t try to turn it into a cheap tourist trap and build some run-of-the-mill Disney-fief version of the American Hotel on the foundation you worked so hard to put up? I look forward to your next video - hopefully about a climbing/caving course you took to improve your safety when exploring? 😅 Remember, slow is safe…

Also about Jefferson Chimney - if these rocks clogged it, but only on one level, and chimney continues underneath... they are absolutely extremely dangerous and they shouldn't be step in on underneath.

You must have to get over some pretty big fears to drop down in a hole like that by yourself and putting all your trust in that one anchor, I am a mountaineering backpacker but I’ve never done anything like that I think it’s pretty awesome and exciting and dangerous. Kudos to you👍

brent, i'm not sure why, but to me you are a hero. maybe it is your pure interest in that mine and town., your desire to preserve aaa vanishing history, your stalwart perseverance of something that had its day before you had yours. that fire hit me like it was next door. to see you cry, and yet you go on. you will overcome. the only thing that cannot answer is; are you lucky to have cerro gordo, or is cerro gordo lucky to have you. in any case i plan to visit, to see the mine and shake hands with a hero. always best wishes, be certain that you are on my mind every day. i wish that i was in the position to help you more.

I’m sorry man, I enjoy your videos too much. Figure out another anchor point, I am an underground miner here in Colorado and my father in law is a cliff rock scaler. He hangs off 1600ft cliff and scales and bolts in glenwood colorado. He’s wouldn’t approve of how you’re tied off and me as an underground miner shit my pants watching this haha! Please man figure out fail safes and backup safety catches on your anchors. I was told those should be pulled to 5,000 pounds for 5 minutes. Out of fear for your safety take another ropes class, we love you man and enjoy your videos.

I am becoming hooked on the CG mystique. As you lead us through the mine I try to imagine how the miners of yesterday accomplished what they did. Looking at the chimney and other verticle cracks I can't imagine how the ore was extracted from the walls and moved to ore carts in such a constricted space. Have you done or considered doing a video on the methods and practices of 1800s mining at CG? Perhaps the gentleman who helped you with the Unoon Mine maps may be able to assist with the history piece. I think people would love to see the "how stuff worked" angle! Please becareful down there alone. Thanks!
