When I was about 12 years old I witnessed a leg dismemberment from a PTO shaft and my innocence of youth was shattered from that point on, it wasn't just the leg injury that was shocking but the entire body of the individual being violently whipped around that I'll never forget, I'm so proud to see how well you have recovered Rick, the person who's injury I witnessed has made an excellent recovery and is doing fine also, I learned an important lesson that day, never never never get anywhere near an operating PTO shaft even with the shields on, just cut the tractor off and remove the keys from the ignition, it only takes a second if you have to do maintenance.

I won't forget the cc video I saw taken in some factory probably in China, some older worker was by what appeared to be a broadloom carpet rolling machine, it must have been cold as he appeared to have long sleave jacket and gloves on, his cuff or glove got caught up in the carpet rolling up on the spindle and he was pulled in in a split second and just like that he was being spun around and around and being buried inside this carpet roll as more carpet came off the machine, every revolution of the roll slammed his legs on the floor so hard his shoes and pants were soon thrown off as were his legs, by then the carpet stopped adding more to the spool and the completely rolled up carpet with him in it spun much faster. After several minute he was thrown off, it looked like no one was around and by then it was way too late, even if he survived, everything below the belt was basically destroyed by the pounding on the floor.

There's nothing better than farm life, but, it's full of things that will injure you, or kill you, no matter how careful you are. I worked in the emergency room 20 years ago with a college and friend. One day while we were on a break, he lived up his pant leg and pulled off his prosthetic leg. All of those years, hustling in a busy ER, and I never knew. I couldn't even tell anything was off with his stride. By the way...you have a beautiful, family farm.

PTO's are no joke. And so many farmers have loose fitting clothes. It's always something that needs to be watched. In my experience whenever you have more than 1 person on any job, you need to be 3X as vigilant. Most people have a pretty healthy sense of danger, but that becomes greatly reduced when familiar people are around. It gives a false sense of security and it adds a distraction. He's lucky to be alive. My dad almost kicked the bucket that way. Luckily(or not, given my experience with how these things tend to happen), my uncle was there. He saw my dad get pulled down and he instantly shut down the PTO. His comment was, "Well, I didn't think he was bending over to worship me." lol.

People don't understand why safety is priority number one, I started working with a new company and the word they emphasize everyday is safety. I'm hispanic and in our culture we are touhgt to be tough all the time since we are kids and we grow with that mentality that nothing can't hurt us until something bad happens. We need to change that superman complex, a human being can get kill. Be safe everyone.

Damn farmers really are cut from a stronger cloth than the rest of us, and Rick is truly awe-inspiring because even missing a leg he is still more capable than me and I'm able-bodied except for a few loose screws. Even puts on a smile when talking about his accident, this guy is on a whole other level of physical and mental strength

What an amazing story. Did the Canadian government pay for this man's physical therapy, prosthetic leg and accommodations he needed to work at his dairy again? If so, this is what Canadians should be proud of, which is taking care of their own people when they need it so they can remain productive members of society.

Im a year late but I agree absolutely. It is kinda sad knowing that if this happened here in the US you would be put on disability MAYBE and that would be that... Canadas health care system though a little flawed, should be something we emmulate.

pto shafts are deadly, I've witnessed my cousin being torn apart by one, after that I always had the tractor off when attaching the pto.

My cousin lost his leg in a grain auger just below the knee. He was standing on the edge of the hopper shoveling grain when he lost his footing and fell into the hopper and the auger grab his foot. The auger took 4 bites of his leg before the engine stalled. I've always been on the scene when someone has leaned over a power take off and having it grab a piece of loose clothing pulling them down and in. Lucky for them I was there to shut the tractor off fairly quickly to only cause bruising to their chest..
