The library ones - and most likely the sock checkout - work by having a programmed metal strip that is in the back of library books and probably in the large label on the socks. The metal strip interacts with a sensor in the checkout and it knows what's there.

To be fair to Apple I’ve been a customer of theirs for 15 years now, I decided to switch over to Windows for a couple of years in the middle and made the switch right back to Mac as soon as I could. While you do pay a privilege for it, the level of support and service (in the UK at least) from Apple far exceeded anything I got from Microsoft/Dell. While I have had some problems with my Apple products over the years, I have never not ended up coming to a positive resolution

I’ve only needed to get help from the Apple Store once (Lakeside?/Bluewater? Can’t remember) when I got my first iPad mini about 8 years ago. Being a bit green about the difference between Apple ID and the password, I kept putting the wrong one in when I first tried to login and I managed to lock myself out WITHIN HOURS. Following day went to the Apple Store on the off-chance and not realising we needed an appointment. Had to wait for a short time but they sorted the problem out in a few minutes.

This is honestly so nice as someone who lived in London as a student the last few years. I finished my degree during covid, tenancy ran out and I couldn't get a job, still can't get regular work, just living with my parents in Suffolk. Weirdly getting the travel blog experience but just in London and vicariously feeling like I'm home again. Wandering in and out of shops, seeing friends and eating out, discovering the weird zany bits of London and sitting on the short grass of the little parks scattered around between buildings.

In the US, so long as the first issue was reported before the warranty period expired it is still considered a warranty issue. I've taken iPhones back to the Apple store after 18 months with swollen batteries and they've always just swapped out the phone for a refurb or new unit. Apple's customer service is top tier even if they're anti-consumer when it comes to owners repairing their own stuff.
