Hi Matt! As a faithful reader of your vids and as a devotee off the M3 since 1980 I want to note tangentially that KZbin has become a marketer for everything Leica, and a cousin of eBay and Amazon. The clear implication of most of the Leica vids (I counted about a dozen today) that turn up is: you cannot hope to take a fine photograph without a Leica. I enjoy your vids because they are instructive in Leica use and I trust that you cab steer clear of this Leica sales mania!

No comparison. The new MP is coated and doesn’t flair unlike the M3’s. The M2’s viewfinder is also more flair resistant than the M3’s making focusing much easier

Modern finders look clearer and more contrast from the few I’ve seen but it will depend on each camera condition. Layout better on M3, clarity better on MP/MA etc. all mentioned have the condenser so don’t have issues of M4-P, M6 etc.

I've had 3 modern MPs in my life (all BP). First one in 29xxxxx serial range, which is from the first batch back in 2003. I also had one in 39xxxxx range briefly. Both had some mechanical issues needed to be fixed (they were bought used). 1st one was never as smooth as the M2 and M3 I've had even after a CLA, and 2nd one was returned after I discovered a shutter issue. I now have a brand new one in 59xxxxx serial range, which I believe is from the very latest batch. This one is as smooth as the smoothest M I've used in 15+ years, and so far zero issues after running a dozen rolls. Still too small data sample to really tell anything, but it is encouraging the latest batch is feeling the best of three.

Interesting observations, as my own experience has been different. Have owned an M6, M6J, M6TTL, M7, and four MPs over the past 20 years. While I regret selling the M6J, I have always preferred the MPs to the M6, M6TTL and M7 largely because of the brass housing, old style advance lever and smoother film advance. However, my newer BP MP in the 59xxxxx range just isn’t as smooth as the earlier 0.58 A La carte, 0.85 Ralph Gibson or ‘plain Jane’ chrome 0.72 MP all in the #300xxx serial range, nor does it feel as well built. Perhaps the supposedly plastic parts in newer versions are having an influence here. Either way, it is my older black 0.58 and chrome 0.72 version of the MP that i have held on to as the rest of my film Ms have slowly found new homes.

I'm also torn between the 1957 Elmar 50mm f/2.8, Voigtlander Color Skopar 50mm f/2.2, Summicron 50mm V4 and the Thypoch Eureka... Looking for a small travel 50mm that doesn't break the bank. I want it to be sharp at f/5.6 and it has to be light and easy to use. I rather dislike the idea of a non-clicked aperture ring on the Eureka. But the Color Skopar 50mm f/2.2 really seems to be a bit contrasty on film (?). What is your opinion and what would you get out of those three? I shoot film but I am planning to get a digital M in a couple years.

Im currently using the LEICA ELMAR 50mm f/2.8 (1957-1974) on both the m3 and the m10m and it’s a fantastic little lens, decent sharpness wide open and when stopped down provides great sharpness across the frame. It has the infinity tab, which I enjoy, aperture is a little finicky. Very compact when retracted on the m3. Can be retracted on the m10 however I leave it out

I've had an M6 classic for about 16 years - I tried an MA and an MP and weirdly the MA felt a bit hollow, and the black MP just felt delicate because of the gloss paint. In the end I bought the M6 reissue, and I love it. Apart from it needed to be returned after failing within a month. I also have an IIIa which is great. It's funny I dreamt of and MP to go with my M6 for years but, I dunno, just felt a bit more showy than the utilitarian M6.

I have gotten the same reports from repair guys about plastic parts inside current Leicas. I know that plastic can be quite serviceable. In a Leica I expect better. No longer a precise item of pride aimed at professionals and really serious amateurs but now more a consumer item and bling. I keep thinking that Leica can do better. So I'd say you did it right. Better to repair a solid older camera than put up with the ones with cheaper insides. When the repairmen caution you it is wise to take heed. Hi Matt, interesting what you are saying. I have owned the amazing M3 and it is the best film "quality" range finder I have owned, but I sold it. I found it did not entirely give me the flexibility I wanted in a range finder. Flexibility in the sense of the focal length of lenses I can use in combination with the M3. I have primarily been a 50mm type of photographer. But over time it seems my style of photography has changed and leaning now towards 28mm focal length for street photography. I previously did hardly any street photography and more portraits, hence why I owned the M3. I realise you can get adaptors or parts to enable you to use other focal lengths on the M3, but that seemed pointless to me. So I opted to buy the M4-P and I also do not require a light meter. However, the M-P seemed to tickle my fancy and so I purchased the black paint one - like the brassing effect. I have never looked back. It allows me to use most lenses and I guess having a warranty or it being brand new makes me feel more comfortable. And I still own the M4-P but it needed to be CLA'd and prior to being serviced it was a little unreliable and I was missing some cool photograph opportunities. I use the M-P a great deal now and have the M4-P as a sort of back up. The M10 is the only digital camera I own and I really enjoy using it when I get the chance. I am extremely happy with what I have now and play around with different lenses. I had looked at the classic M6, but with a few of my friends complaining they can not repair or change the broken light meter seriously put me off. That is why I purchased the M-P. But I am glad to see the light meter issue has been resolved. My Leica friends are surprised I bought a M-P and not the M-A being a true analogue camera - but I reply each to their own! I am sticking to my guns and keeping the M-P, as it performs to exactly what I need it to and the built in light meter is plus if I ever need it. Great video mate and it is always good to listen to other peoples opinions and advice. Good day from down under.

You're right, Leica film cameras are just boxes. Its all about the glass. I have a chrome MP and a black M6TTL. The MP is for BW film and the M6 is for color film. I do like the hefty feel of the MP though but I did just send it in for a CLA and to repair the film counter. Apparently the MP film counter uses a plastic nylon gear that is prone to wearing out. I recently picked up an M10 that has become my walk around camera but in hindsight I should not have bought the M10. I find I dont enjoy the digital Leica experience as much as I do film but the M10 is handy when lighting conditions are constantly changing or if shooting in low light. I have my eye on the Q3 43 and may trade in the M10 to get that.

I really don't understand why you needed another Leica M film camera or M digital for that matter? I am also not sure why Leica is insisting on passing the MP as the pinnacle of engineering? As fine a camera that the MP is, an M3 of nearly 60 years ago is just as mechanically perfect as the MP. Perhaps a more contrasty RF window or the ability to take a wide angle lenses natively are the bonus points, but for me the M3 and the M2 are still the king. PS: In the old times the original Leitz which was a family business manufcatured cameras like the M2 and the M3 knowing that they would probably end up being used by war correspondents, photo Journalist, even fashion photographers on the go and these people seriously punished the camera and the lens. That is why these were made of top quality brass & steel. These days Leica is owned by a Venture company and something else, and Leica cameras are mostly manufactured as fashion and statement cameras, I am sad to say. Even the modern Leica lenses that cost several thousand pounds are no where near as well built as the something like a Summicron Rigid or Summicron DR of over 50 years ago. So, cherish your old Leitz cameras.

Now they want to sell to everyone, even though they are still expensive, but the difference is that the profit generated now goes to the shareholder rather than being reinvested back in the company. I have read that they removed the error log code from the firmware of M11 because it was causing so much problem for the company. They did the same thing after the M8 and with M9 removed the shutter count code from the firmware so no one could complain why their shutters died prematurely!!!

Reason No6 Matt I think that black circular dot on the front (is it the battery port) is just ugly, it spoils the front design of the camera, perhaps if they had recessed the circle so it matched the red dot on your M4-P ie being flat would have been more in keeping with the design.

The MP seems like it's only especially worth it if you MUST have a meter and you don't already have a film M with that style viewfinder. My M4-2 is perfectly suitable for me (28mm frame lines are kind of redundant, that's just more or less the angle of view of the entire window) in that regard and frankly I do not think $3-4k extra is worth a meter. I also agree with the general notion that the M3 ergonomics are just not as easy to use as the M4-onwards ergonomics. I love my M3, but it does feel like an older and more antiquated piece of technology that isn't as refined for a person to use comfortably.

Hi Matt, first: thanks for your content and advice. Based partially on your videos, I added both a Barnack iiic and a double-stroke M3 this year (both had been recently serviced by DAG here in the States and I got both of them from a great shop near me: Blue Moon Camera). I wonder: do you develop and scan your own film? I hadn't done that for 50 years and decided to get set-up to do so again. Truth be told, it's somewhat of a pain and I'd rather shoot digital. I suspect all of your (or most of) your model shoots are digital. Most of my shoots are birds and as such I lean more on a 300mm prime with either a 1.4 or 2x TC and as you're probably aware the 400mm and 500mm Leitz lenses cost a pretty penny). I wonder how many Leicas you own? I appreciate the fact that you felt the need to own the MP in order to write about it. I suspect your brand requires that level of commitment. It would be great to make a living with photography. Luckily I no longer need to make a living and I can sit back and live off the interest. It's early afternoon here in the gray and wet Pacific Northwest and your Bye-Bye video has been up about 4 hours or so. Hope you have a great week! - Gary

I was very disappointed with my new MP. First arrived with a very stiff ISO dial, repaired under warranty. One year later the meter stopped working, so I returned it to be told the MP would to be sent away to Germany and would be away for quite some time or I could have my money back. I got the refund.

Good on Leica that they still produce film cameras! People who think that used cameras are defective by nature, or are covered in germs, or are only for those who can't afford buying new will take up the offer. (Of course, also youtubers who must review them on their channel.) But, as you noticed, the new cameras are at best clones of Leica's classical line-up. In a way, they actually don't operate as nicely (smoothly) as the old cameras. There is a simple reason: Gears need some time to develop a perfect mesh. Brass gears (as in the M3 and M2) do that nicely; steel gears (M4, MP, M6) take much longer and will never mesh as smoothly as brass. (So you should have given your new MP at least 20 yrs of service!) The original MP ("P" for press) was designed for heavy duty, including the use of motor drives. Steel gears make good sense for that . The new MP has steel gears not in order to cater for the needs of press photographers but, I suppose, to save costs. --- BTW, that slanted rewing crank is one of the silliest innovation ever to enter the M-world. The straight crank will never break, the slanted thing is a delicate contraption. What you should never do with it: rewind as fast as you can. But that was precisely the idea when introducing it! 🤥 Of course, the new M6 wouldn't be a copy of the old one without repeating this piece of (bad) overengineering.

I had a lovely M3, loved it but I’m convinced M film cameras are better suited to shoot 35mm… so I moved on and I now have a black MA and a Zeiss 35mm lens and I rarely shoot 50mm with it. It genuinely feels quite awkward to shoot 50mm on an MA. If you are a 50mm shooter I do think the M3 is quite complimentary so it makes a lot of sense to have 2 separate bodies and get rid of the MP

If money no object, and i'd be wealthy enough - i'd choose the MP into black, because it's without the infamous red dot, which i dislike seriously, second, it does have the integrated lightmeter, vs the M-A, and last, but not least - every lame duck on YT nowadays uses the M6, and plays poseur around. 🙂 No social insecurities - just what i've seen during the past 5+ years, because these guys into their 20's haven't being grown up with film, for real. All the new film Ms - MP, M-A, M6 (and the discontinued M7) use a plastic gear in the film counter mechanism. Which will eventually break. And has in mine. Easy to fix but still about a $200 repair, but the previous Ms had that gear made out of metal. These cameras are now $6000 new, so why this cost cutting? For $6000 you'd think everything was made as good as possible.

Whoa! You are recommending that people by a 1953 Leica M3 over a brand new Leica M-A? An M-3 is 71 years old! Metal fatigue results from thousands (and thousands) of cycles of loading - like a cheap paperclip fails after 20 cycles. Pin holes in your shutter curtain can occur after one afternoon of leaving you camera face up in the sun with no lens cap. Repaired shutters - as opposed to replaced shutters - can fail after one afternoon in a hot car trunk. Old cameras have unique problems.

@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I worked for a company that made circuit boards and had five circuit board making machines, at a million pound each. They worked as fast as they could and even though we made huge quantities of electronic " things" we struggled to get components to feed the beasts, the usual suspects took the lions share of components, the car industry, Apple etc and we were way down the list. Making electronic stuff is easy, getting hold of the raw materials, that's the challenge.

As a past M6 Classic owner and a current MP BP and M7 owner I have never had a single issue with any of them other then accidentally burning a hole in my shutter on the M6 many years ago. With all that being said at the end of the day the MP/M6 Reissue is in fact a better camera as it is still being made and is serviceable fully via Leica and third party techs, for this reason alone it is a better camera as it will last, and be serviceable for a longer period of time. Most of your 5 points are a little, well, pointless especially when it comes to longevity of serviceability of "forever" camera bodies.
