In today's video I return to the focal length that had previously ruined my photography. In the past I treated 28mm as a comfort blanket but now with fresh eyes do I feel any differently?

I've come to love 28mm after using my Q for a year. I don't see myself snagging a 28mm for my M as I really enjoy the Q for the lens and serving that purpose, yet I find myself shopping for 28mm M lenses weekly haha!

Well done! I recently traveled to London from Germany and shot the same scenes with the 18mm (27mm FF) 1.4 Fuji and the 33mm (49mm FF) 1.4 Fuji with the T5. They are both so sharp that I can crop all kinds of focal lenghts out of them if I need to. Otherwise, I think they are the perfect street kit. The quality is so good that I have yet to try Leica, though I am tempted.

I live near London and usually walk a similar route that you do, either with my Q2 or my M11 with either a Voigtlander 35mm or 50mm Summicron. The cropability of both cameras always gives you the ability to get a 50mm or 90mm perspective, albeit with a larger depth of field. The frustrating thing is that I never “see” images like yours. I just walk on by thinking it’s too boring.

No not quite! So I saw this when watching the video back and then when I went and looked at the image it’s fine! I’m pretty sure it’s actually the video encoding and compression! I notice it on some of the graduated backgrounds I use behind the photos too

Yeah, looks like a fairly noisy image overall but the pattern is only visible in the dark sky. So I'm guessing the compression somehow created "artificial moiré". @@Goughie

We all have somewhat different preferred field of view/attention vision - experience helps match things up with the “right” focal length lens. Ditch fear of missing out and go for what’s at hand, instead. Good images are to be had everywhere. Zone focusing a good technique to master. Ever use the zone focus scale display on your Fuji cameras? Good luck with setting up the new studio. Cheers!
@Goughie

I literally never zone focus with my Fujis, not having the distance scale on the lens just stops me even considering it, definitely a mental block more than it not being something that would work well

This is where I think the new Q3 shines. Whilst being a dedicated 28mm, its sensor and 60mp allows for great IQ at both 35mm and 50mm crops. Almost three lenses in one package. At least this is what I am telling myself as I mull over the option of buying it! 🤣

Another great video, thank you for sharing :) I agree with you in every point and am still searching for my focal length. On my Nikon Zf I run the 28/40mm combo, on my M6 sits the Voigtländer 35mm 1.4. Last year I shot mostly on Leica Q 28mm system, but on the Q it's not truely 28mm. That's why I'm currently experiencing 28mm completely new on the Zf. I have the feeling that I keep come back to the 50mm range, but often it is too tight specially in door for family documentary. Therefore I will keep testing out the focal length during this year and see what will work for me :) And regarding the Summilux, yes had the same experience. Had the 50mm 1.4 Summilux and really appreciate the beauty and craftmanship of it, but daily it was to heavy for me. Now having only the 35mm Voightländer on my M system is weight and size wise a game changer, although it is not Leica glas - but I don't care, it's still great :) If I use my M system more, I might run the same setup like you, 28/50mm. But for now I want to figure out, if I will use it as much and could justify the cost :D - but shooting with the M6 more during 2024 :) Have a nice day and greetings from Germany mate :)

The Nikon 28 and 40mm lenses really deliver, especially for what they cost. Not the sharpest lenses ever but still usable wide open and never sterile. I like them even on the Z7.

Back in the dark "film" ages, I'd go out with my trusty Leica IIIf & 23mm Summaron F/3.5 on a day trip to London & felt all was right with the world! 50 years on I still try & capture that same sense of adventure and more recently ventured out with my new Fujifilm X-H2 & latest Fujinon XF 23mm (35mm ffe) F1.4 (WR) lens, but was sadly disappointed! I've got used over time to using wider focal length zoom lenses, (gosh... what I wouldn't have given for a fast compact 20mm lens, back then), but now realise, as you explained in your video, I likewise tend to see the world through the width of a 28mm (ffe) lens. Therefore just before Christmas, like you, I travelled to London (however the weather seems to have been better!), but this time equipped with my old X-Pro2 & XF 18mm (28mm ffe) F/2 lens. I again found a sense of freedom (& loss of weight, for that matter!), and although it might have been nice to have had another lens, eg 35mm F/1.4 lens with me, I didn't really miss it, for it allowed me to concentrate on the photography. Yes, after the day trip, I did spend some time "cropping" a few of the images, but mostly no more than I would have done anyway, had I'd used the 23mm (35mm ffe) for the trip. I know "cropping" is considered in some quarters to be a dirty word, but it does allow street/travel photographers far more flexibility to use a single lens/camera combination especially now since so many digital cameras have large megapixels sensors. Sure, zoom lenses can avoid a lot of "cropping" but at the cost of "kit" weight & similar/debatable, diminution of image quality. Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself to sell up my Fuji gear, & purchase Leica Q (or dream about a new Leica Q3!)

Thanks. Funny, when I take out the 28mm and a second lens, it is the 75. One lens usually means the 35. I don’t have a 50. Often too narrow and difficult for zone focussing.

I rock the Ultron 2 28mm and Cron 50mm, perfect combo. I just wish they did a tri-summicron that was amazing quality for a one lens setup. From memory, the tri-elmar just loses some of the magic. I love the 28mm for travel as you get tons of context of where you were for your memories when you look back after a few years.

I have struggled somewhat over the last few years with not being able to shoot wide enough when traveling light (Fuji x100 series) the V being the latest. I sold a lot of my Canon wedding photography kit just keeping my R5 and a few lenses as I'm pretty much retired now and purchased a Leica Q2. Now I can fit whole buildings into my travel photography, the 28mm has made a bigger diference than I thought. One example is photos of Malaga Cathederal while in narrow side streets, I could fit it in the frame but the main thing is, if you have enough pixels you can crop for your 35 or 50mm shotos too.

@@Goughie last year my wife and I started to travel way more and my Sony gear was wearing me down. So I "downgraded" to Fujifilm, just to notice after a couple of weeks, that I actually had more glas than before without saving anything. This realization then brought me to the Q3....and opened the "M" rabbit hole. BUT......with both cameras and a couple of M-lenses I am still smaller and lighter than I began with last year. I really love my Leica cameras - mainly because they make photography a joyful experience. And they deliver!

🌈 28mm supremacy ✨ I actually had to learn to love the 28, like an arranged marriage since I wanted a small camera and both the X70 and Ricoh GR were exclusively 28 at the time. I struggled for months, eventually putting electrical tape on the screen for a 2:1 cinema crop to learn how to use the width of the frame. Eventually feeling too cramped and peeling it off the tape to finally graduate to being a 28 guy. 💪 It was about a year until I really felt like I was on my way to seeing in 28, and learning to compose clutter into context. It's been a real journey. Now I'm crap at shooting 85. 😂

Glad to see that you are back with the 28mm focal length - I couldn't do without it. It is such a good companion to the 50mm. 35mm has - for me - always been a "50 wannabe" Whereas the 28 is a true wideangle lens that is usable in almost all aspects and situations. I too have had a number of 28's. I upgraded my 28mm Elmarit (latest version) to the Summicron - and I have not regretted it for one second. So one recommendation: Get the Summicron (probably the new close-focus version, since it is optimised for a M11 sensor and beyond) - There is really a ton of difference between the two (Elmarit vs. Summicron). You will love the Summicron "dreamy, magical Leica -rendering. !

I think the Voigtländer lenses are more than sufficient, and Leica lenses are not always necessary. Especially with expensive focal lengths like 28mm.
