Jason Johnson crashed into a catch fence back in 2020 and we all how that turned out. My thought is remove the trees put in a culvert and fill that hole/creek bed in with dirt with a soft tire wall beyond that. So thankful she's going to ok with alot of prayer and time she will get there. God bless Carly and tanner. 22c 18t

Totally agree, something needs to be done. I've been around southern Indiana race tracks all my life, never have I seen anything that dangerous. God was with Carly no doubt. She should get the win and the championship, she was leading with 2 laps to go, red flag stopped the race. Please tell me they didn't restart the race! How's mom and dad doing ? All of you are still in my prayers.

@@mikepriceup not sure that's a perfect idea either; You'd have seen her end up in the campground instead. The way her car was flipping I think she'd have vaulted any barrier under 10 feet tall, and hitting anything hard enough to arrest her quickly could be the same (or worse) result as here. If she actually did clip the tree, that might have been the only thing that slowed her down from jumping the trench as it was. Someone said NHRA netting and while that might be the safest option, it would work only if they could string it up right. An actual fence either wouldn't have enough give to cushion the impact, or have been too soft and tangled around the frame. 15-foot-tall wall of tires is nice and all, but would be difficult to install properly. Outside of that, I can think of a Knoxville wall which would likely be too sturdy here, or a giant dirt mound which the car probably would have just climbed over. The only solution would be to get rid of the runoff area and pen it in (which would change the approach to turn 1 entirely) or get rid of the seldom-used campground and let cars go off into the field like Lernerville.

I agree a catch fence slows the momentum, a wall could bounce a car back into the track and or be too abrupt stop causing more damage to the driver. Thanks Tanner!! Keep doing what you do ,it's why we are here.

The major tracks have catch fences primarily for the protection of the fans but they are also used for the protection of the drivers. Cottage Grove should NOT hold another race until some kind of protective barrier is installed to protect the drivers in that turn from the creek bottom. My opinion is that a catch fence would be the best solution.

would not help..I been around sprint car racing all my life, dating back to the 1980's. Devils Bowl has the large TREES off turns 1 and 2 with no wall, and no fence, the cars often flip off into the trees, thats the mystique of Devils Bowl, and its one of the favorite of all the OUTLAW tracks. Also note, DEVILS BOWL is also built on a side of a hill, with the back stretch higher than the front stretch, so drivers are going up hill in turns 1 and 2 with the trees close by while they go down hill in turns 3 and 4 down to the front stretch. Anyone getting tangled and flippign off of turn 1 at Devils Bowl ends up in the trees.

Hi Tanner thank you for the journey that injured Carly,(get better soon young lady.) .As a former senior official in motor sport the first thing spring to mind is, was the track checked for safety of the competitors and danger spots rectified. For sure a safety fence and crash barrier should be erected in that area before any more accidents are allowed to happen. Definitely need some type of catch fence to prevent that from happening again. Tanner, my opinion that frame should not ever be used again. You should cut it up in small pieces autograph each piece and sell it to your fans so you can buy a new frame. Again just my opinion. Also, do not reuse those torsion bars they have been stressed out too much. Thanks for the update.

If not a catch fence maybe tractor tires? It takes one accident to fix something that no one knew that could possibly be a problem. Nothing on Cottage grove whatsoever, but you have to protect your drivers. We had an incident at Bakersfield speedway where two cars caught on fire they did not have the proper fire extinguisher by the next race they had the proper equipment needed to race.

That is incredible that she wasn't hurt more than she was. She definitely had a Guardian Angel that night, thank god!!! I don't even think a catch fence would of stopped her because she was cooking down the straight away and she had so much forward momentum. Maybe something like drag racing has at the end of their tracks like netting to snag a car and keep it from going any further. Still, great to hear she's getting better. ✌

Definitely need some sort of catch fence there. The distance down just adds to the damage that can be done. As well as the larger trees aren't going to move much. Tracks without an outside catch fence have such a disadvantage of injury to drivers in the event of a major crash like that. As you said, even her getting caught in a chain link fence would have probably averted her injuries. Yeah she might have had some small injuries but not as severe. Cause it looks like she hit that large tree up high in the right rear and that's what folded it in on her. Glad she is healing up tho. Great job to all the first responders and everyone that helped her get out of the car safely and timely.

You said it buddy they need to put a fence up. Over here in Australia all our speedways have a fence all round the tracks. But like you also said it could have been alot worse and it is good to see her up and about even if she has to wear that back brace for a bit

Most definitely a catch fence as a barrier to that gully is needed. You may recall Attica Raceway in OH (you turned 18 there in 2021!) has a similar wide run-off area in turns 1 & 2. And while I never seen a car hit the catch fence which is well back, it will stop a car in a never ending rollover. When the 22C started that end over end roll I thought she'd end up in that Cottage Grove run-off area, similar to when her engine blew last year and she exited the track in the same area but on her wheels. I don't recall if that was Cottage Grove though. Thanks for sharing the video. Deuces! ✌✌

Doesn't need a wall there, just a catch fence. Fence on front stretch needs raised and go over track. Exit at turn 3 needs a lot more protection. Drivers need to get together and tell track they're not racing until safety improvements are made. I always used to check out new tracks for safety before I'd race. There was one track, drove 4 hours to get to, checked it out, was super sketchy, didn't race, just drove home. Safety 1st. Continued thoughts for Carly's improvements

Our local dirttrack has a three or four foot concrete retaining wall with a 15' to 20' catchfence on top with the top third angled back onto the racing surface. Said retaining wall is backed up on the outside by a full-height dirt berm for reinforcement. I've seen cars with and without fenders go head on into the front stretch guard wall hard enough to crack the concrete and displace the dirt berm!!! This track used to use wooden guardwalls on the outside of the track and 3-rail armco on the inside rail. Saw MANY cars go through those fences and rails.

Well I know that no retaining wall and catch fence on that end of the track has probably saved a lot of racers money without having to make major repairs but...Should the right instance occur where a car goes flipping off the corner, that big cell tower could also create a big issue. I've been to tracks that doesn't have catch fences at all. Port Royal Speedway only has a fence on the front stretch, the turn 1 and 2 has a giant wall just in case a car flips into the air to prevent from flying into the parking lot and taking out fans vehicles. Turns 3 and 4 has a giant net to prevent a car from flying into some woods and the pits, the back stretch just has a wall and a little chain link fence on the other side of it. I've heard stories of cars plowing through walls out of control, cars flying into trees and catching fire and jumping the wall and landing outside the speedway. That accident was a close call and something should be done about it now, not next season, not if it happens again but right this instance. Here's what I would do, I would put up a tall net like I mentioned and place it along the wood line so just in case a car slides off the track it won't fall into creek but stay on that run off in turns one and two.

I drove a sprint car back in the fifties and we did not even have a roll bar on the cars back then much less a Roll cage. I was fortunate to not roll the car that I drove. Good luck young man I enjoy watching you race.

I'm an Australian sprint car fan. I'm amazed at how unsafe that track is. My local speedway has a 3 foot concrete wall all around on top of that 15 foot catch fence. The catch fence has braced pipe posts and 10 strands of continuous heavy wire rope all the way around and filled in with mesh. 10 feet behind that is another pipe and mesh fence about 10 feet high to keep the spectators back from the primary catch fence. A track like Cottage Grove would not be able to get any insurance cover in Australia.

part of the issue with the USA tracks is there seems to be no regulations on fencing and safety etc. here all tracks need a licence to operate, which makes them cover things like the walls, fences, safety equipment/people. I'd say a catch fence should help, but my friend who raced sprint cars in high school cleared a fence and crossed a 4 lane highway when her throttle stuck. Honestly, I think it's probably a good time for the track evaluate all their fences and runoff areas. The front stretch fence doesn't look like much. Sprint cars are really unique in that they are open wheels and light. It doesn't take much to send you flying. They definitely can't let that happen again. Hopefully they have lessons learned and they will implement them.

You all have a lot to be thankful for it could have been much worse. Hopefully the track takes note and puts a catch fence up in that area to make it much safer 🏁

Don't forget! Catch fences are used alot in racing and the fence was designed to save the fans! Catch fences throw the cars back into the track for even more chance of desaster!😩 if there's a area to clean up and can be used for a softer landing pad ......a lane outside of speedway!! They use chopped up sneakers for ground bedding at horse shows!!! So why not make a bed of that around the land not used!! Clean IT up and all work together so the track doesn't have the total cost!! And when another driver happens to hit that same spot!!! WHICH WE ALL KNOW THEY WILL!😧..... THEY then Tanner Holmes! Can have the out look you are always deeply trying to explain!❤.......YOUR A FANTASTIC RACING FAMILY ! ..showing all how it really goes!!!! Keep up the great work you all do!🇺🇸🏁😎👊

Thank god for the safety features on those cars. Hopefully they continue to improve on safety. I agree they need to do something. It seems like a car gains speed after leaving the track. The best to all of you.

Though it seems to defy physics, cars do actually gain speed in accidents like this. The energy being held by the friction of the tires to the ground is released when they are airborne and for a few seconds, that energy is converted into increased speed as the atmosphere offers less resistance to the same amount of energy the track's friction has just released. Same occurs if a car slides off a road into wet grass.

That track needs to lay a couvert pipe and cover up that section of creek. Also need to add more wall and fencing in T1 so a car flipping down the straight hits that section of wall and keeps the cars on the racetrack. A slight turn right to exit the track around this new wall/fencing. Again super relieved that Carly is going to be 100% again soon!!! Let’s go Carly🏁

Definitely a wall like knoxville. I mean insurance should make them. Not only did a racer get hurt but what if a car clears through all the trees into the fan parking and hits a person. Fan and driver safety at risk.

Tanner there is a RACE TRACK not to far from me here in Little Rock Arkansas it is called I 30 Speedway and they have a little bit of the same scenario nthere at I 30 and ironically it is in the same turn TURN 1 wahat they did is put up a bunch of wover FENCE WIRE I mean big FENCE WIRE and WOVE it all together for the same reason as what happened to Carly except a Sprint Car actually Flipped there once and ended up in the TURN PIT BLEACHERS and plus knocked them down so they could put a lot of woven FENCE WIRE and Retainer Cables there to hold those Cars back and keep them from going into that Creek and out of the drop off in that Creek so that is one way to handle that problem and it would not cost them as much as someone's life or a heafty LAW SUIT

Absolutely ridiculous that track has no catch fence or safety precautions in place to keep you from that creek. Glad she had an angel riding shotgun with her. Dear Cottage Grove Speedway, these are the drivers and talent that allow you to make a profit ,support your business and make your race track sustainable. Please support and take care of the people that take care of you. What's a quarter million dollar investment compared to someone's life. We are our brother and sister's keeper no matter what the case. Great Job Team Holmes. Praying for Carly. As a father your parents should be really proud. Class act's the both of you.

At the end of the day, racing teams have the final vote over safety at the track. If a track can't put up a catch fence, racers really don't need to be there. A team has the responsibility to assess safety teams, fencing and track condition, then decide if the potential of a lifetime of paralysis is worth racing for a couple of bucks.

I know how hard it is to stay home when you want to race but if a track doesn't care about its fans and drivers enough to have ems and rescue on standby at the track then you should avoid racing there... it's a huge liability for you and the track honestly

Not to sound negative, but good luck getting a small track to do a safety improvement for a rare if not almost freak crash. If that spot was a regular collection spot for crashed cars, then you might be able to sway the track owner to correct it. I have been going to races since the late 60's. I even raced for 6 seasons at Star Speedway back in the 90's. Sat in the grandstands for many years and worked on a few different pit crews too. I witnessed a similar crash happen at Star back in the early 90's. Their front stretch wall extends out away from the racing surface for @ 80 yards as it keeps cars from hitting their equipment building. Due to similar tree and heavy vegetation growth, where the wall ends there is also a hidden drop off almost identical to this one you show. OF the thousands of hours I spent at Star Speedway, I only ever saw 1 car go flying out there. It was a winged Midget car that caught a wheel with another driver, and it flipped violently over that embankment. Neither the flag man or anyone in the tower saw it happen. It was probably @ 2 laps before someone in the stands got the flag man's attention to what happened, and then the driver who fortunately did not get hurt popped up out of the woods. Took 2 wreckers close to 45 minutes to retrieve that car out of there. Was really torn up. To this day nothing has been done to correct that spot. I've known of a handful of different drivers that got hurt racing that tried to sue tracks over what they felt was unsafe areas. Every one of those suits got tossed out due to the nature of potential danger that comes with racing.

Terre Haute, Indiana had arnco installed above the wall like Knoxville. That would probably be the safest option. Chain link ain't the greatest. Its not cheap. But I-beam reinforced arnco would not protrude into the cockpit. Carly may have still been banged up, but stopped that car from leaving the racetrack. Bless the Holmes family. Get well soon Carly.
