I think the sliced salted beef you're talking about in the introduction is pastrami, but if Americans call pastrami corned beef I've never heard it.

Traditionally, a Reuben is made with corned beef. 😄🥪 Pastrami and corned beef are similar in many ways, but pastrami is smoked and roasted whereas corned beef is usually boiled or steamed. The spices typically used are a bit different, giving pastrami a richer, smokier flavor.
