Juan Melendez EVERYTHING in my generation was better than EVERYTHING today. With the lone exception being technology. The problem with technology though, is that your phone is now the "smart" one, instead of the person who is using it. Damn, people rely on their phones for everything. It's a communication device, it's their entertainment, it's their link to the world through social media. I actually find myself saying things like, I don't care what your phone has to say, so stop consulting with it because you're getting the wrong information. What's the old saying, if you put s*** in, you get s*** out? Most people today never even consider that anything they're researching on the internet, was put there by some person. But if the phone says it's so, then people take that as gospel lol Pretty easy to envision a future where artificial intelligence will rule the world one day. It's inevitable, it's a no-brainer. If you don't believe me, just ask your phone and it'll tell you. Unless of course, it doesn't want you to know what it's planning 😂 Yeah, these clips are from when Sports were still Sports instead of this current mediocrity in the form of underachieving, overpaid, soft players. Today people miss games for things like shoulder soreness. When I played football, as long as your shoulder was still attached, you were expected to be on the field. Soreness? Yeah, if you tried that in my day you'd have soreness all right. Because your ass would be sore from sitting on that hard bench the rest of the season LOL

The truth is the only thing that’s different now is medical knowledge. If today’s players are soft, why did Romo play on a punctured lung? Cole Beasley just played a playoff game on a broken leg. Alex Smith just came back from nearly having his leg amputated. Josh McCown is a backup QB who played a whole playoff game on a torn hamstring. If you want to go outside the nfl, Klay Thompson went out and shot two free throws on a torn ACL. If you want to talk about how they’re making the game less rough, that’s what happened when people with permanent brain damage decide to file a class action lawsuit that is probably justified. As for technology, it’s ofc a blessing and a curse. There’s a problem with people being too connected to their phones and, in particular social media, I won’t deny that. But don’t act like it’s nothing that’s ever happened before. When your generation came up reading magazines or watching tv, there were articles written by the generations before about how people were too wrapped up in TV to create real connections. Kids today are too addicted to technology, sure, but is that the kids fault or the parents fault? And to the idea that the internet is unreliable for research, the internet is one of the greatest researching tools ever invented. Sure, people misuse it and don’t actually make sure what they’re reading is reputable, but that’s always a problem. The issue really is that people will read a news headline that isn’t based entirely in truth and then won’t read the article, just send it to a bunch of friends. Tbh that’s largely a psychological issue but being so connected is making it worse in a way. Then again, largely due to the new technologies and new generations, life today is generally better than it was back when these videos were taken. Crime is way down, bullying in schools is down, college enrollment is up, etc. Basically, it’s complicated, and just proclaiming your generation to be better doesn’t tell the whole story. I get why, everyone thinks their generation is the best, your generations isn’t the first to do it and I guarantee I’ll be saying the same thing in 25 years, but it doesn’t make it right

What I'm saying is because of big contracts and pampering, guys are sitting out games where in years gone by they would have been out there playing. It's just a fact and it's indisputable. Look up guys like Dick Butkus, just to name one. The dudes arm could have been falling off, he was a team player who refused to sit. Watch old footage of when you could basically hit the quarterback at any time. I'm not saying that's right, but today there's no even ground. If you're rushing the quarterback and he gets rid of the ball and your momentum carries you forward even if you bump into the f****** guy, you get a penalty. And if you bump into him and he falls over, oh my God, you're being brutal. That's what I'm talking about so I don't know what kind of rant you were on about. But a guy like Joe Namath played with two knee braces for most of his career. Today, one knee injury, and some guys calling it quits already because they got one of those wonderful contracts with about 20 million dollars in guaranteed money. Don't tell me the game isn't soft compared to what it was in the 40s 50s 60s '70s and '80s for that matter. It's a little past taking medical precautions. It's more like taking time off now if you've got discomfort. Sorry, but it goes with the territory. Become a f****** accountant if you don't want to put your body on the line. Rugby players do it, and they're not wearing any equipment.

Hard to imagine a better homage to the sport than this. You'd think the NFL wouldn't just tolerate, but celebrate this video documentary. It's good for the game, and preserves much of the NFL's history. They should honor (and compensate) Dave Volsky. Instead, they're defensive (and maybe because they didn't do it).

It's like the music genre of "Jazz" The newest artists complain that they can't compete with legacy of the masters, citing that the record sales of the past performers, many of whom, if not all are long deceased, surpasses their record sales...by A LOT. Newness seems to be on one hand, reveling in it's "This is a new thing; taking something "old" and remaking it so that it's ours" And then on the other hand, they are disappointed and hurt that most listeners aren't purchasing, nor attending their events. I recall becoming football aware in 1972 as a 10 year old. I've always been a big Bama fan (Roll Tide!) but in the 70's it was a 3 day football fest every week for me. College on Saturday and the NFL on Sunday and Monday night. I quit watching the NFL a few years ago, the game is a shell of what it was over 20 years ago. Enjoy the channel, Comrade Dobler also has a good one but Dave was the king.

WOW!!! This footage is amazing, it's history, the NFL, at it's best. It was a different game then a runners game and a defender's strike zone was from head to toe. I remember some of the game's & players starting from the 80's when they started showing the NFL here in the UK. I used to buy all the NFL Films, videos available over here and played them till they were chewed up. It is heartbreaking to see Ed & Steve Sabol , players & coaches who have sadly passed away, but their legacy lives on in NFL Films.

The clothesline tackle was legal. Not only that, you could do anything to anybody and not get ejected. Not exaggerating, these were all allowed. Until the mid-1950s, it was murder ball out there.

Good God this video right here... I lost my father here recently to cancer and this video brought me to tears with so many great memories. It brought me back to a place of such nostalgic happiness that I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA I still possessed it! Old NFL Films with Steve Sabol has this way of... reintroducing the magic of Sunday afternoons as a kid for me. All of this was just before their reintroduction to prominence but it really reminds me of cheering for The Packers on TV (or listening to them on the radio if it wasn't televised for whatever reason) as a kid! After the game we'd head to the park to do our best imitations of a young Brett going deep to Sterling Sharpe. Then we'd practice doing our own version of the unstoppable "Club" move Reggie "The Minister of Defense" White used to get after the QB. In the middle of their D-Line Green Bay had "The Grave Digger" Gilbert Brown burying whichever unfortunate running back was tasked with trying to get them the 2 yards they needed to convert for the first down. Along with #96 Sean Jones opposite Reggie and #71 Santana Dotson it made possibly ONE OF THE GREATEST D- Lines in NFL history outside of the Pittsburgh Steel Curtain or The hated Vikings Purple People Eaters. Those guys allowed great DBs like shutdown corner Doug Evans to negate opposing teams WR1 and let #36 Leroy Butler roam around center field and make other routinely iconic & memorable plays & moments also!!! The most memorable was probably the time in 1993 The Pack were trying to preserve their shut out against The Raiders at Lambeau. The Raiders had other ideas though and at the beginning of the 4th quarter they were almost in Packers territory. Butler forced a fumble on his hit to the receiver that Reggie scooped up and headed towards the end zone with. Reggie got wrapped up near the sideline and was about to be pulled out of bounds when he spotted Leroy streaking towards him. Reggie laterals the ball right into Leroy's waiting arms as he's falling/being dragged out of bounds and #36 doesn't miss a step as he crosses the goal line for the touchdown! Leroy nearly cleared the entire end zone wall at Lambeau with most his body into the waiting arms of the ecstatic Packer fans in that section! I can still remember being a 13 year old Packer fan and watching that play as it happened. That play made it so that for the next 7 months I was almost unable to contain my eagerness for my freshman year of high school. That way I could either be a ball hawk like #36 or lay the wood on unsuspecting receivers & tight ends who came across the middle ala Chuck Cecil! Man I absolutely loved watching this video and writing this comment!!!... I can't tell you how many happy tears it brought me doing both. Thank you for that so very much.

So-called purists have complained about this, that or the other thing "ruining" football for 100 years. The forward pass, pads, television, domes, artificial turf (a legit gripe), instant replay. Every generation thinks their stuff was better than the ones that followed and they're all full of crap. The game has evolved but it's still run the ball, pass the ball, kick the ball, hit the guy carrying the ball. That will never change. Football isn't perfect but it was a beautiful game then and it's a beautiful game now.

Concussion protocols are a good change, No horse collar tackles is a good change Protecting qb legs from low hit is a good change Removing the violence, the big hits are not good changes The 1 shell rule is a terrible change, Not allowing pass defence is a bad change Flagging defenders for sack for rough hits not on head or low is awful change Artificial surfaces instead of grass is an abominably bad change.

Back in the 70s Dallas, St. Louis, Philly, NY Giants, Detroit, SF (until 1979), Miami (until '76 or 77), Buffalo, Cincy, Pittsburgh, KC, Pittsburgh, Houston, Chicago, NOR, Seattle , New England ALL had artificial turf.

Just started watching this and love the training camp insights, seeing the coaches communicate with the players (particularly because it aligns with what's going on now in August 2022) seeing the intensity as they try to build a tough, consistent team ready for the long grind of an NFL season. This sport just doesn't have the same magic without the Sabols. NFL Films is still amazing and the sport is always going to be popular, but the storytelling will never be at this peak. And the 70s were the best example of that.

I miss this brand of football. Thank you for posting as I don't watch NFL today. With crybaby millionaires kneeling for our National Anthem, to the obvious fix that is present in most games, terrible officials with crappy calls, guys not even trying when they are on the field, I can't stomach todays NFL. Back then, it was rough and tumble. Or tuff and rumble. Whatever! I miss it. Again thanks.

That's funny, because those 'good old days' were when touchdown celebrations were born. Remember Billy "White Shoes" Johnson? Hell, the spike was invented by Giants receiver Homer Jones back in the 60s, as was the bane of every old football fan (and every player's knees), astroturf. So don't be all high and mighty like this was football at its purest. The Steel Curtain (and at least half the league) were on steroids for Christ's sake. None of what you boomers bitch and whine about "ruining the game" is new. None of it. It's just in 4k now.
