After spending years at this man's feet, I can honestly say, I desire to learn more from him and continue to do so - He is God's instrument to the Church. When he enters the Church of Glory it will be a great loss to the Church militant.

I took classes with Scaer within the past decade. I understand that he's finally been put out to emeritus pasture. He's a good man, but it's long past time that he ceased teaching regular classes at the graduate level. These firesides - taken with several grains of salt - and perhaps a couple sections of Greek Readings are what he's best suited to now.

Not having the blessing of knowing Scaer personally and the video seemingly a VHS recording, spurs the question, When was this fireside chat? Is this from a long time ago? Thanks again for the great content.

Why did he refer to it as "the sacrifice of the mass" I have only heard RCC refer to it this way ( 3:12 minute)?

He often uses language from other traditions. It helps keep you attention and distinguish/understand the difference between the traditions.

Because the mass is as much sacrifice as it is sacrament as Aquinas said. Luther, for all the good that he did do, also messed up the theology of his spiritual descendants for 500 years and counting. That is the conclusion of this LCMS pastor. "What shall I offer to the LORD for all his benefits to me?" What do you have except for Christ to offer to the Father? Your heart? Your faith? Your good works? Your systematic theology? No, there is only one gift we can offer to God; that is the one he first gave us. Or said another way, we love him because he first loved us.

@JJ-dc7tt Jesus Christ died once for all. God the Father provided that sacrifice. Our Baptism (the other sacrament) joins us to this death & resurrection of the Lamb of God. So by Jesus death and resurrection our sins are atoned for.

@@berniepfitzner487 Hebrews 10:12-14 NKJV But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

He'll call himself a catholic, Episcopalian, Mennonite, to make jokes and to make a point. "Like we do in my church... what's my church?" *no one answers* "the church of england" and so forth.

I dont understand how this venerable teacher would consider it pietistic for a pastor to be concerned with his own soul

This man seems pretty angry. He talks a lot about people. Who is he?
@jrc63825Ай бұрын
you should do a phd on that as a historical topic.
@dylan3456Ай бұрын
@@jrc63825 it’s only worthy of about two minutes of attention en route to something more interesting than “old man shakes fist at clouds” videos. For all I know he’s some kind of war hero, so I could make myself out to be a real ass if I commit more than what was required to say “why does this guy keep showing up in my Lutheran videos?” All he seems to do is talk badly about people and talk down to his audience, fwiw. Is he everyone’s less-loved grandpa or something?
@IMSpanglerАй бұрын
This isn't really his public face. He's got a character he uses with the students to get them to think and move outside of the Lutheran bubble. This talk was given specifically to students at the seminary who have a rapport with him but looking in from the outside I understand your statements.

@@IMSpangler that’s fair enough. I’ll amend my comment then and not be a jerk.

It takes a semester or two to begin to decipher David Scaer. But he was one of the best professors for challenging your comfortable assumptions and forcing you to defend your ideas. He was also unfailingly entertaining, usually at the expense of students who took themselves too seriously.
