a way to explain why rev-matching is important for clutch longivity...lets say a loaded shopping cart was zooming past you and you are thinking about stopping it. dumping the clutch is like standing still and catching the cart by hand. doing so would put unneeded strain on your arm if you keep doing that. however in a rev-matching standpoint, you would run (hence blipping throttle) along side the cart grab the cart (release clutch) and slow yourself WITH the cart down. i really hope this analogy make sense...

Rev matching on a bike was something i just learnt naturally. Braking from high speed, and rear wheel suddenly under rotating from downshifting made me use mechanical understanding to adjust my driving. Didnt really know much about how you should or should not drive but rev matching just came naturally and is essential for driving these machines imo :)

Very nicely explained. How I learned to ride a bike in teenage was without any proper training and instruction and just by hit and trial. Then I left riding for two decades. Now starting again and I realized that I am still in habit of doing things the way I did long back. I used to apply brakes to reduce speed and then downshift to match gear with speed. I believed at that time that downshifting without reducing the speed by applying brakes will manage the bike. Now I am refreshing myself and learning proper techniques for everything. Thanks for this great video.

Should i learn method 2 first or try method 3 from the start?
@wb21942 жыл бұрын
I have been riding for 50 years some competitively (Dirt, drags, and road). I have never "bliped" the throttle. Its a sequential transmission and I rarely used the clutch. I know why Tractor trailer drivers do it because they have to match engine RPM with the transmission or it will not down shift (Straight cut gears). However most truckers do not use the clutch to up or down shift, they "float" the gears. NASCAR and most race cars use straight cut gears and only use the clutch to start and stop. Synchronized transmissions need the clutch most of the time. Passenger cars have synchronized transmissions because they are quieter.
@upnorth54652 жыл бұрын
I only use my clutch from a complete stop. 🤷 That's what true rev matching is in my opinion.

Guys I have a question: in the third method he uses the front brake to compensate for the time the clutch is pulled in and the engine isnt braking by itself. But why use the front brake? Is it because you can make a smooth movement with only your right hand actuating both the brakes and throttle at the same time? I personally use the rear brake for this, any difference?

So, can someone clarify this for me? In method 3, when you're blipping the throttle AND braking at the same time, is the brake a continuous pressure throughout all the downshifting or are you in a sense blipping the brake too? If you're "blipping the brake" that seems like it wouldn't be very fluid, would it?
@rickconstant61062 жыл бұрын
The static demonstration here was a bit misleading - you should aim to keep a constant pressure on the brake lever during the process for smooth deceleration. If I think about the technique I use (for the last 50+ years), I squeeze the brake with my fingers and blip the throttle by flexing the thumb underneath it (it only needs a brief, small movement).

Whenever I downshift I simply pull in the clutch as I roll off the throttle while simultaneously downshifting and then when it comes time to let out the clutch I roll on right in the friction zone and I don’t have any issues and I can do it pretty quickly too. I just don’t get that cool “BRAP” as I downshift. Though my question is am I being inefficient or doing something wrong I’ve just never thought of it any other way.

So explain to me how I can have a Hayabusa for 20 years and do engine braking and yet my motor no my drive has unusual wear? It is because in my 38 years of driving high performance motorcycles what you're saying is absolutely a myth. These young people on sport bikes now will sit still and do burnouts and then have their motor hitting the rev limiter for long periods of time and even those bikes are lasting over a decade with no engine issues. Even stunters. This is teaching trash writing and for some reason there's a whole bunch of young people who think they're good writers and they come up with this exaggeration that they call reality. People this stuff is not true. This is internet mumbo jumbo that only the least experienced motorcyclists believe.
