@@neighbor472 It's aural art, but some of the stuff Don did I think was expressly meant to be noise since he probably thought it'd be funny. If you listen to Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, some of the earlier free jazz that came before and Howlin' Wolf, you can kinda see where Beefheart came from.

@@uriahroseii1026 I don't think any of them are meant to be noise. Beefheart's stated intention was to make music where you couldn't focus on one instrument. Frequently parts would be played in different keys and time signatures, but not in a random or noisy way, to generate that effect. TMR is much more structured than much of what Coleman or other free jazzers would do which often had extended improvised solos, but on some songs Beefheart layered in free jazz elements built over the structured elements. I think most people agree that the more you listen to it, the more you see how intricate the structure of the music is, as opposed to it revealing itself to be random or noise driven.

One of my very favorite Beefheart songs. A few years later after the original Magic Band borke up, two good high school budies of mine joined the second interation of the Magic Band. Eric Drew Feldman, and Jeff Moris Tepper. I got to meet Don Van Vliet (Beefheart) a couple of times, including backstage at a show in West Hollywood when my budies were playing with him. They eventually recorded 3 more albums and toured the world. The Germans loved him. RIP Don.

Once, in one of our visits, I carried two empty LP covers, plus some other unusual weird stuff to Dali's house, circa 1971. One was "Freak Out" and the other was "Trout Mask Replica", thinking that he might become fond of the LPs, we left the precious vinyl home, not far from Port -Lligat, much concerned about not to strand them. At that time, things were not as easy as it became since the CD advent, not to mention the Internet. At least if we lost the covers we would have the records to listen to. Our mission was to show him about how the indisputable 'Kings' of the underground, recognized and were paying unusual respect to the number one surreal madness Maverick of the world and as Zappa did on that LP. And Beefheart's homage with that extraordinary and unsurpassed composition. Dali did not go any further than browsing them and pushed them back into my portofolio. Dali was 65 years old then. Though we were eager to show him how important such gestures were, it might as it did look, seem too mundane for him as there was, I suppose nobody else but him that could praise him. But explain, somehow, how the British were his best admires (refereeing to Edward James, et al). Later on, that afternoon, as we were leaving the patio, he gave us the news, that somehow shocked us, after some goings about the 'evils' of drugs, as he thought we were lost and bamboozled in a world of subjectivity, when he announced us what it seemed as nobody else could know at such stage of things, and though I knew Alice Cooper was part of Zappa's Label. My opinion there, was, if in my thoughts, how come Dali could waste his time with such 'lesser' act ?. But he explain it enthusiastically, he would be doing a show in New York with him, in case we could follow him. That we kept it a best hidden secret for years, till it has grown in the public awareness and became sort of public domain. Somehow, something that was impossible for us, if to travel to the States though I was living in England...

Great and unique story! Thanks for that. It makes sense that Dali would be aware of/into Alice Cooper but found Beefheart a bit more...opaque? Though both are/were showmen, Alice's showmanship is more on the bombastic, visually shocking and overt carnival level as Dali's. Beefheart's style is not flashy, not even really 'theatrical' really, it's subdued, but much more odd.

Huzzah! I'm not the only crazy one who thinks this song has got a groove you can move to! Except maybe when the sax comes on. You know what, save it for the end when people are too plastered to notice and just vibe with it anyways lol

If you like jazz this is really not too far out at all, not too hard to follow whatsoever. Oh, and if you dig poetry and painting too, then you're right at home. Play this on the nudist beach.

Yeah sure! Everyone will tell you Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, so yeah thats a good one, but also these are good too: Modern Day Jazz Symposium - Charles Mingus Live At Massey Hall - "The Quintet" Giant Steps - John Coltrane Out There - Eric Dolphy Filles De Killimanjaro - Miles Davis That's a pretty broad range of different types of jazz and iI think a good sample. Also listen to Folk Forms no. 1 by Charles Mingus, that ones really groovin'. \m/

You may also enjoy Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, and Coltrane’s Interstellar Space. Especially Interstellar Space but Ascension or OM will work in a pinch.

Starting to really dig this along with Ella Guru & Moonlight on Vermont. Made an effort to listen to T.M.R. and then got away from it. Now that I'm hearing a few of the songs again, I'm starting to get it. There's really no comps for this music...it just has to grow on you.

each melody is a meme, a completely absurd ridiculous and naive intention, colliding with several others. Trout Mask Replica is a meme compilation, he has fashioned the emotion of Gen Z humour long before it was comprehendible or mainstream. This also happened to be Matt Groenings favourite album

I love how the sax starts and slowly drifts ahead of time. I'm guessing that it might have been overdubbed without the rest of the track playing. Either way, it's bonkers.

It gets out of time because the Captain could barely hear the music he was dubbing over, so he was pretty much guessing! Accounts for his voice losing track or overrunning on other tracks too.
