Kyle, your commentary has been great, but you missed something when you said that the Democrats didn't oppose FDR. Even though black people voted Democrat for the first time when FDR ran for re-election in 1936 (so they at least benefited somewhat from the New Deal) they were largely excluded from a lot of New Deal legislation, and the benefits went disproportionately to white people. FDR also wouldn't support anti-lynching legislation. From what I understand, FDR didn't do this to be racist against black people, but he was scared that the Dixiecrats wouldn't support the New Deal if he pissed them off.

FDR probably didn't have such high levels of support within his party, because both parties were broad-tent at the time, with politicians having more in common with those from the same part of the country than with those from the same party but elsewhere in the country. The Solid South was a stronghold of conservative Democrats who probably didn't like a lot of FDR's policies (and who certainly worked to make them less ambitious), and the broad-tent nature of both parties made both the liberal consensus and the party switch possible.
