@FA9082 those companies make up a percentage of the S&P500. Putting £10 into Apple is not the same as putting £10 into the S&P. Basically he is getting a spread from the S&P amd getting more focused exposure from investing directly on top of what he already has in the S&P. Its perfectly valid. I pay into a global fund instead though to get more variety and then directly into other stocks for either more direct growth potential (like Nvidia) or increase overall dividends (something like a REIT or even Coca-cola). Depends on what you want.

Hey Mitch, as a fellow 28 year old it was great to have a full peep into your portfolio, that employer pension contribution is very juicy, lucky you! I would be interested to hear more about your property investment. Is it something you would look to do more of in the future? I imagine with that mortgage amount you have a fairly decent ROCE employed with that flat?
@MitchShoesmith3 ай бұрын
Hey! The property investment is ok, not spectacular but not poor. I would buy another one in future, but I think i'd lean towards getting a house rather than a flat. The service charge has massively jumped up this year unexpectedly and its really cut my margins, I'll ideally look to reduce the debt on it when the mortgage is up to increase monthly cash flow so there is more of a buffer. I do think property is a great long term investment and i will likely buy more - all being well!

I have around 50% in a global index fund with the rest spread around 3x managed funds, probably get better returns than 8% per year with other strategies but portfolio almost runs itself and I sleep better at night. Also using a money market fund for a property deposit...Moving funds to a bond OEIC once I'm ready to draw from portfolio. Good luck with your investing.

Life is good, but hasnt been without its challenges. My biggest lesson has to be intentional with my money. My wife and I have an income and expenditure sheet and a balance sheet. I’m always a bit concerned with rentals, the property market isn’t great, and doing some maths and assumptions your mortgage would be around £200pm, tax at 40% around £330pm, leaving just below £400pm minus any repairs and issues. Just seems a lot of headache considering VUSA could have matched that over the same period.
@MitchShoesmith3 ай бұрын
It’s a LTD co so only liable to pay corp tax at 19% on it, and mortgage is £391 a month, I wish I cleared £400 a month profit but sadly nowhere near after accounting for management fees & a recently increased service charge which has hit my margins substantially. I definitely get why it wouldn’t appeal having done it myself for the past 12 months and the stresses that come with it 😂 Nonetheless over the long run once the mortgage gets cleared and property prices increase, and rent will gradually increase too it should be a very good asset with decent passive cash flow too. Feels a bit like “short term pain for long term gain” at the moment though!

I started investing on Vanguard, then moved over to T212 in 2020, I've just not transferred the ISA over (I probably should though!). Re All World, it's not that I dislike it as an investment, after all it's made up of 60+% US exposure anyway. I'm just pretty comfortable backing the US right now, thats where all of the companies that generate the most profits and value are. Other big exposures in the All World are the UK which the outlook is a little uninspiring, Japan, could be a good play as part of the all world but it's an area I haven't researched in any real depth. Overall - just a personal preference!

Can I ask you how often do you check your portfolio? How do you react when your investment plummet, do you sell or just buy the dip? I keep freaking out every time it goes down like now, I only invest in global stock ETFs

Hey, I check it a few times a week, but I’m unemotional about it. If the market plummets I’ve historically invested heavily more and I’ll likely not sell at any point at least for the next 5 years!

Agreed, After taking charge of my portfolio in early 2017, i stumbled into losses. Upon realizing that a change was necessary, I consulted a fiduciary advisor in 2020 and since then my $1.2m portfolio has gained 28% annually through restructuring and diversification using dividend equities, ETFs, mutual funds, and REITs.

Hey Mitch 👋 Quick question. I work in the NHS, do you have any idea whether the option is there to contribute to a stocks pension rather than the current NHS pension scheme?
@MitchShoesmith3 ай бұрын
Hey, I’m by no means a specialist with pensions but I suspect you can’t directly from your payslip as it’s a public sector pension, however you could always open a SIPP if you had additional funds to invest and do it separately, you’d still get the tax benefits too.
@Door19892 ай бұрын
I have a question - The stocks and shares ISA has a tax free amount of 20k. At the end of the financial year, do you leave the 20k in there and then work towards adding another 20k on top of it...or do you have to open another one up
@MitchShoesmith2 ай бұрын
Yeah you leave it in the account if you want too, then your allowance resets in the following year to top it up again

How’s dividends work sure heard there a way so the automatically get re-invested
@MitchShoesmith2 ай бұрын
Hey - couple of points to touch on. If you invest in an individual stock, the dividends are paid in cash and appear in your free funds in your investment account for you to reinvest or withdraw. However if you invest in a ETF, like the Vanguard S&P500 ETF, you can choose the ticker symbol VUAG which automatically reinvests the dividends, or the ticker symbol VUSA which distributes the dividends in cash. Both funds have the same exposure, they just treat dividends differently. There are other funds that offer this but you'll have to check based on which ones you're interested in investing in. Hope that helps!

@MitchShoesmith3 ай бұрын
Yeah if I’m honest I think I’ve always been a bit naive to it because it’s always been the same, never worked at another company since graduating so no idea what “normal” employer contributions are. I’m pretty sure it goes up to 15% employer contributions if I were to do I think it’s 8%

the s&p 500 is already heavily weighted to the companies you have invested in and tech, and then your main portfolio investments are more tech. sincerely, its already really fickle in the stock market if tech stocks just do excellent rather than invest the wheel again in their earnings. also, palantir is a hell no considering they are friendly with certain governments and do surveillance ai. no amount of money is worth that imo
@obscvre3 ай бұрын
Why does it matter that S&P 500 is tech heavy now though? It could change in the future, maybe the top ones will be non-tech companies then, I see buying tech stocks separately as double insurance as opposed to double buying tbh.
@linegoesup-tl1hq3 ай бұрын
@@obscvre just diversification, especially right now when its really volatile. The demand for chips for ai could slow down if the companies training ai cant sell their ai to businesses. need a couple of industries to invest in so that if one goes boom you have 2 others to keep you safe. Its standard no? have a look at how much of the s&p current growth is nvidia
@obscvre3 ай бұрын
@@linegoesup-tl1hq yes but that's exactly the point of investing in S&P 500 though isn't it, if the AI bubble busts, then the top companies can be easily replaced by those from other sectors, you only lose your individual tech stocks, the ETF would stay unaffected (in the long run at least), as it's tracking the top performing companies, not the top performing tech companies

Is there ever a bad time to start investing in a S&S ISA if you’re investing for a 10 year period? People say we’re in a bubble at the minute with the ETFs etc. I’m unsure whether to start a S&S ISA, or pay into AVC alongside my government pension which I can take 100% of I tax free upon retirement. Also with an AVC you get an immediate uplift of nearly 40% because of the tax and NI savings.
@LawrenceTimme3 ай бұрын
The worst time to invest is, tomorrow, next week next month or next year. Because there is always some doomer saying its all going to crash tomorrow and we are in a bubble.
@belinda70733 ай бұрын
@@LawrenceTimme very true. I just don’t know whether it’s best to invest in S&S ISA, or go down the AVC route with the local government. AVC’s give you an immediate uplift of around 40% due to tax and NI savings. Not everyone has the ability to use AVC’s so I’m interested to see which would be the best option.

What made you bother with the "investment" property instead of keeping it in equities? Surely you're better off doing absolutely nothing for higher gains than getting £800/month and having to do all the crap that comes along with being a landlord on a property you're only paying off the interest on.
