Another vote for D mixolydian here..but that is actually relative notes to normal. G major... If you're new to this ..the way I've come to understand modes is thinking of easy A minor scale and C major. They have the same notes.no sharps flats ..they are relative... But it is what chord we choose to emphasise that flicks it into a different mode..if your Bass player kept thumping am root notes and you are also emphasing resolving to am.. You've got yourself a minor mode Aeolian.sadder feel...but if you and Bass player emphasise C major chord..suddenly it all sounds brighter . You're now in C major mode (Ionian) Basically you can do that with any chord in the scale..and it becomes one of the modes..each with a unique 'feel' . Open to being corrected.. But think I've got that right! So this song happens to be D mixolydian..(which is also the G major notes..but not that modal feel).

+Anastasia Bila search for "cadence strum" on my site. It's for members, but I walk through how to play lots of strum patterns, so you can choose what you want to use, as long as its in 4/4 times

Actually, this song is in D, but not the traditional (Western) Ionian mode. It's Mixolydian mode, meaning a hard-wired flat 7 in the chord. Your ear very clearly hears a IV (G) going to a I (D), making D the tonal center. However, I would actually write the key signature with one sharp instead of two, due to the mode. That doesn't mean it's in G, though :-)

+finalewiz Mixolydian mode means there is a lowered 7th. In D Major that would mean the regular C# would be a C natural. This does happen in the song, but the major IV (G) really doesn't affect whether this song is Ionian or Mixolydian.

+Nathan Brewer Gotta disagree with you, sir. The ear does not hear G as the V - and that's what really matters. You entire premise assumes everything is Ionian. Many pop/rock tunes are not, though. Mixolydian is quite common, especially in the 70's.

+finalewiz +finalewiz you are right that G is not the V. It is the IV. If it were the V then the key would be C major. However, if you mean to say that the G to D resolution indicates it is mixolydian,well, that really just means its a plagal cadence. You are also correct that this song is Mixolydian. I just want you to be sure that it's not necessarily the chord that precedes the tonic which determines the modality of a piece. Does that make sense? In other words, this song could have no G major chord and still be Mixolydian because it has the lowered 7th (C). Hope that makes sense.

+Nathan Brewer I didn't mean V - I meant IV. My point is you seem to be saying in the video that the song is not in D - I believe it is, just not in the Ionian mode :-) Mixolydian, by definition, has a minor V and a dominant 7. Semantics :-)

+finalewiz Yes, it is definitely mixolydian. Also, another way to tell would be to hear Sol as the resting tone. The same would be true for Do for major or Re for dorian.
