Maybe if all EU bikes were made in the EU then prices would be higher but the customer could feel more loyalty to the brand and proud ownership. Moto Guzzi still made in Italy with Italian parts? The price of a motorcycle in the UK is about three times the price of a similar model in India. The bikes would not be absolutely identical because in India it is compulsory for motorcycles to have a passenger grab rail, a saree guard and a ladies' footrest. If Harley had been honest actors in all this they might have a point but they had the bike manufactured in Thailand but didn't reduce the price to reflect the lower costs; if they had reduced their prices they might have won their case in the EU court. Their profits are taken to an American company which (hopefully) pays its taxes in America. Harley could import directly into the UK but they won't and if they did you can be sure that the tariffs would remain anyway. It might even make things worse for us, as UK owners might be required to go through an import process when taking our bikes to Europe for holidays. My 2022 Road King was priced at £16000. The £21,500 I paid was due to UK VAT, duties, registration fees etc. That's about a 34% 'tax rate' AFTER import tariffs!

Might have been worth starting with the reasons why EU put tariffs on several US products. One is retaliation by EU on tariffs Trump imposed 2018 on steel and aluminum from EU countries - EU targeted Harley Davidson, but not only. In addition to the tariffs for sales in EU countries, US manufacturers also had to pay Trump additional tariffs on import of steel and aluminum from EU, increasing manufacturing costs. The "Binding Origin Information" rule was suspended for Harley Davidson products from Thailand after less than a year. EU has suspended the additional tariffs on Harley Davidson products from USA in 2022, suspension has been extended since, also because of USA lifted tariffs on part of stell and aluminum imports from EU countries. Trump will most probably start a new trade war also with EU. That will not only increase prices for imports in USA but lead to new retaliations by EU on imports from USA.
@waterkoppie23 күн бұрын
Already commented on this a few weeks ago. In 2018 when tariffs were raised by 25% (from 6 to 31% due to trade war, around the time Thailand production relocation started, first new Softail in 2018, then Touring in 2020, after the 2015 Street had come from there for Europe and Asia), customer prices did not rise suddenly, propably because prices were "already high enough". So there still was enough margin, certainly indeed on the cheaper Thailand production, only the years after prices rose gradually every year to compensate for the tariffs. And do not expect prices to drop suddenly either when tariffs were to be lifted, deflation is never good, maybe prices would just rise less, or not for one or two years, which has happened before (maybe like for currency reasons etc.), price instability is never good for sales.

Trade deals. The US can be highly protective (read lobbying on behalf of industry) of certain areas of its market. Also, with the US being the largest consumer economy in the world it tends to try to dictate terms instead of reaching a balanced agreement. The EU has free trade agreements with countries around the world. The US is not one of them. Higher tariffs than the more usual WTO 10% is either protectionism, trying to favour domestic industry, or retaliatory.

@RobertTrombley-g6l fact check your brainwashed mind - a trade dispute between the United States and the European Union (EU) during Donald Trump's presidency, which had significant effects on tariffs for products like Harley-Davidson motorcycles and whiskey. Background: 1. US Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum (2018): In 2018, the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum imports, citing national security concerns under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. These tariffs affected many countries, including EU members, leading to a trade conflict. 2. EU Retaliatory Tariffs: In response, the EU imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products to balance the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs. The EU targeted iconic American products, including: Harley-Davidson motorcycles (31% tariff initially, planned to increase to 56%). Bourbon and whiskey (25% tariff). Other products like jeans, orange juice, and peanut butter. These measures were symbolic as well as economic, targeting goods from industries based in politically significant U.S. states. 3. Impact on Harley-Davidson: Harley-Davidson, a U.S. motorcycle manufacturer, faced increased costs exporting to the EU. To mitigate this, the company planned to shift some production overseas, sparking controversy and criticism from Trump, who had championed the brand as a symbol of American manufacturing. 4. Impact on Whiskey (Bourbon): U.S. whiskey producers, particularly those in Kentucky (a key bourbon-producing state), saw a significant drop in exports to the EU due to the tariffs. Whiskey exports to the EU fell by nearly 30% in the year following the imposition of tariffs. In total Trump lost nine trillion which is added to US debt. Sorry, as I realise you were sold lies. Beware bud, you guys have been played by trump AI, just like he used the now banned software that got him in to office the first time, CA which Bannon was a founder of.

Harley is killing itself. But back to tariffs, it works both ways and if EU tariff are high for HD, then 'tough titties'. Then there's what I personally call the USA 'underground tariffs'. Australia with the USA (and with a bunch of other countries) has a free trade agreement, which sounds great and is promoted as there being no tariffs between the 2 countries on the listed products. So, our farmers are able to exports certain crops and products to the USA with no tariffs (and vice versa). But, what a number of the scum-bag USA States did, in order to protect their farmers, they introduced State duties/levies/local taxes/whatever on the Aussie products which effectively defeats the objective of the free-trade agreement and making the Aussie products more expensive. Hence, 'underground' because you don't see the State duties from an import/export perspective. Life wasn't meant to be easy so HD has to suck it up and live with that reality, there are tariffs in certain countries and the USA reaps what it sews, and the currency value of the tariffs would be less on each bike if the price of the bike was lower in the first place. And, BTW, our Aussie dumb politicians and highly paid clueless public servants, didn't have the brains to include a clause in the free-trade agreement that if any USA local taxes were specifically applied to the Aussie products then the equivalent in tariffs would be applied to imports from the USA.

Harley is Stupid and just thinking about PROFIT. Other bike brands are similar in price but you get more modern features, etc. with those other brands. Harley knows that a lot of their customer base are stupid as well and will continue to spend more money for less. Younger generations are smarter and with inflation happening, the younger generations aren’t going to pay that kind of money for a pedal bike (Harley) when they can buy a bike from a different brand for cheaper with all the bells and whistles.

KTM better hope the US doesn’t hit them up at the same tariff. It would end them.

Let me get this Straight, The Socialists Union is charging a 25% Import Duty on overpriced Harley Davidsons. Is there a 20% VAT Tax when a Customer purchases it too? That makes a 45% Tax Total. Your Free Health Care is not Free!

"Back in 2018, following a dispute with the European Union (of which the UK was then a part) the Trump administration imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminium. In response, retaliatory tariffs were imposed on US imports such as Levi jeans, whiskey and… Harley-Davidsons."

Import duty is paid on the product value first, the sum of the import duty and the product value is what you pay VAT on. Item value 10,000, import duty at 25% (2,500) makes a total value of 12,500, VAT at 20% on 12,500 is another 2,500, total price for the item is 15,000, a 50% increase over the base cost.

@@Leeluvv-l3d China was dumping Steel in the USA for below Production costs. I doubt that the USA buys any steel from the European Union. I have a Low Boy Trailer made in maybe 1984 and the steel beams have Made in Poland stamped on them. I think Trump put a Tariff on European Union Products because the European Union was putting a Tax on Products Imported from the USA. They Civil War in the USA around 1865 was actually fought over too high of Export Taxes put on Southern Products like Cotton being Exported to Europe. Also was fought over the States Constitutional Right to succeed from the Union as 13 states did that. The Abolition a Slavery was an afterthought after the Civil War had ended. After the North had burned the South to the Ground, destroying so many houses and buildings, Destroying Crops and Livestock.

@@Jb-tl1yi That's what I thought. Those Tax rates are Socialism tax rates. I live in Michigan USA. One of the only States that charges sales tax on the Price of gasoline after a 30 cents per gallon Federal Tax and a 30 cents per gallon state road tax.. Thus the 6% sales tax is taxed on both the $2.25 Per gallon Price per gallon on the gasoline plus 6% sales tax is charged on the 60 cents per gallon road tax too. So they are taxing the tax and the product so $2.85 per gallon plus 6% sales tax makes a total price of $3.02 per gallon total Today the cheapest gas I can find for 87 Octane is $2.79 per gallon or for 3,78 Liters $3.79 for 93 Octane Premium $2.69 for 100 Octane E-85 In the USA our Octane numbers may be lower as it is Motor Octane plus Research Octane divided by two . GAs was way cheaper from 2016 to 2020 when Trump was President and Much higher than it is now during most of the Bejing Biden Administration .. I paid as much as $6.00 per gallon For Diesel and $5.25 for gasoline while Biden was President. I know that's still very cheap compared to European Petrol prices. I just bought an E-85 Flex Fuel kit for my Buell which needs the $1.00 per gallon more high octane gas.. Now I can run the engine cooler on a 50% blend of E-85 and a 50% blend of 87 Octane E-10

The reason for the high tariffs on Harley is in response to the high tariffs on EU steel and aluminium by the US Government. And it'll only get worse when Trump gets into power. I think the US does the right thing putting high tariffs on foreign imports to protect home grown businesses. Maybe if the UK did that 40 years ago we'd still have an industry.

Change, improve, evolve, ...realize the need for competitive pricing as well as good bikes? The Motor Company is stiff-necked. It's a tradition. Hell, it may be policy... I reckon we're about to see what the EU market for HD will bear, and in what earnest will buyers pony-up? The hard core will still drink the Kool-Aide, buy the merch, and dream about the bar fights, they're, unknowingly, lucky to have missed. Is The Motor Company moving towards a "bespoke" product line? I have owned too many bikes, and, specifically, enough Harleys... I've ridden in one Maybach and one Bentley. Those experiences informed me that The Motor Company is a long way from letting one choose the finest cowhide for one's new CVO plush seating. And the floorboards of Tiger Maple or Purple Heart... don't get them started. Please. Tariffs are international bargaining chips for countries wanting fair trade agreements. As you infer, a new POTUS, his penchant for threatening to wield tariffs, and a fresh national attitude (USA) will add another layer to H-D's torte. Let's hope the outcome is sweet for all players.
