Revell English Man O’ War Box: 05429 Scale: 1/96 Length: 74.4 cm - Height: 63.8 cm Pieces: 394 Level of Difficulty: 5 (Read Comments for Details) It has been some time since my last video but one thing brought another and here we are. Haven’t worked on a project for months and this ship was actually finished from spring. I have mixed feelings about this box. I really wanted to build this because it is so big and for getting to choose any colors I wanted. At first I was planning of painting the colors of all my football teams, for each level, at the end I went for mute colors. So from this side of things it was exciting. Changing my mind on colors, painting over ideas I did not like etc. On the other hand some parts of the building process were really frustrating. The one deck was warped so It would not sit in place. Some pieces while they are supposed to be glued on curved pieces like the shrouds they are straight. So they do not sit in place properly. The biggest disaster are the shrouds for the middle mast. The masts lean one way or another. They are supposed to be like this. The shrouds though are straight. They do not “lean” one way or the other like the front and back. The back shrouds lean towards the left. This means when placed they end up in the air behind the mast. To solve this (and you need to really notice it) I cut the shrouds except one piece from the base and forced them to lean forward. Of course this means there was empty space which I covered by adding black string (see 5:23 of video and notice also the curved base for the front shrouds.) I had a tough time making the levels sit in place and I think time has taken a toll on this mold. The masts are so tall and the plastic soft so I suggest you place inside pieces of skewers so they will not bend from the weight of the sails or from pulling the strings of the rigging. Rigging is not that difficult. Bottom line. I think it is time for this mold to retire. It is the first ship that I did not place in a protective box. 65 euro (very good price for the model) and almost 200 for the box. So I did not think it was worth the investment. Of course to others it looks so impressive since it is so tall. Over 2 feet. All wood was completed with inks. No paint. (Hull/masts/decks). Everything was completed by hand.

Thank you so much for your comment. The sails were done by first spraying an undercoat of white and then i paint with a n off white ivory color. After i simply use my washers ones you might use for dust or earth. Light hands, if need be after they dry use a brush dipped in water and “Move” washer down. Gravity. Use a darker washer for ends. Many hands and water strokes till you are happy. Merry christmas.

As a kid I always saw the boxes of the Man o war and the spanish galleon in my favorite toy stores, but they were way out of my league pricewise. Watching your video of this build is almost like closure for me. Thanks so much for posting!

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. To be honest this ship was a kind of closure for me because I promised my wife it will be the last one! :) NO more space. Actually I think I built the ships that I wanted. Like I had said in my comments I wanted to build this, play with the colors, at the end I did something totally different and I am glad I did. The green really matches with the wood. Painting the whole ship with inks rather than just a brown color makes a difference. I did not follow the colors of Revell. The only down part is that due to its age/ pieces warped/and bad engineering I dont dare to move it or take it to an exhibition cause it will fall apart. Nice model to learn rigging. It is big so it gives you the space to work and the holes are not so tiny that you need a microscope. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
