Hello Interesting video well done. Fascinating hobby. Never fall asleep like with TV I see you use Revell Aqua color paint. I have an issue with Revell email 14 ml tin paint not curing ( drying off ). The email is Revell solid silk Matt no. SM 331 purple/red. I applied first, surfacer primer from Vallejo, then email color. This did not dry off, even after days !!!!! Could wipe off with white spirit. Very strange. Was messy. Other email paints OK Just this SM 331 purple/red Suggestion?

Hi Malcolm, the Revell and most enamel paint brands do take a long time to cure. It will depend on how thickly your layers are but I’ve known some even with thin layers to take a week to cure. You should wait until the paint is cured no matter how long it takes, room temperature, and humidity will play a large part in how long it will take to cure. You may need to consider that the paint has gone bad as well. If the lid is not airtight then the paint can go off and affect its performance, enamel paints do last for years if there are sealed up properly though. Some primers will have an effect on enamel paint also as well as some varnishes, try not to mix brands when using enamels because often primers and varnishes are formulated for their specific brands. Vallejo is an acrylic-based paint as far as I know and the thinners used to mix the paint may not be suited to enamel. Paints like Tamiya and Mr. Hobby/ Color are lacquer paints but are classed as acrylic. With all these brands use a primer that is designed for plastic, make sure they are completely dried before painting over them.

Good job, I like the idea of fitting lighting! Did you have sufficient paint from one pot to paint the hull? I am just about to commence the QM2 build and don't want to start painting the hull and find I haven't got enough.

One pot should be enough, I did put it on thinly. It all depends on how thick the paint is. The revell blacks can be very thick and would need to be thinned down a little.

You did not spray or airbrush the hull?? -how did you avoid brushstrokes in the paint..........?

Thanks for the question peter43John. Normally I only hand brush my builds no matter what the size. I do have an airbrush but I very rarely use it. There are a couple of things you can do to stop brush strokes. First use a flat-headed brush where possible, this increase the area and limits brush strokes. Paint in one direction only applying thin coats as you go. Keep the brush loosely in your hand the more pressure you place on the brush the more likely you will have brush strokes. Also keep the bristle moist while painting, the paint can dry very quickly on the brush and those tiny flecks of paint will cause brushstrokes.

@@ReckshawScaleModels thanks for the tips. I normally spray paint all my hulls-even my little 1:570 Titanic because of dreaded brushstrokes. If you can paint a 1:350 hull like that using a brush with NO strokes in the paint, you sir are truely a brush master!👌

Yes, don't use email paints. They smell. Use Revell Aquacolor. But problem is not available in small shops in Antwerp province. In town, one model shop, Herman Verschooten, Eiermaarkt. He has all Revell products. One shop, selling Revell kits never heard of Aquacolor !!!!!!!! Only email color 14 ml . in stock.

Hi Malcolm, have you considered buying the paints online. A lot of hobby shops will only stock one to two brands of paint for instance my local shop only stocks Humbrol paints. Hi Jacob the paints I used for the build are listed at the start of the video. However ill list them here with the colour names. Ignore the first three/ two numbers (361/ 36), those numbers are just the full code name for the paints. I hope this helps. Hi jacob thanks for the question, I bought the paints from my local hobby shop but also on eBay and Amazon. Most online hobby shops will carry the paints you need. If you can't get the colours you need though search for a colour converter, that will help with similar tones of colors with different brands.

@@ReckshawScaleModels I’m a young guy relatively new to model building. I appreciate it man. I just built a non-paint required model of the titanic. Level 3, my new model will be level 4. I should probably use masking tape to paint.

​@@jacobyork7064, if you are going to use masking tape it's a good idea to varnish the paint before placing it down, that will stop the paint from lifting up when you take the tape off. make sure each coat is dried before applying another coat, the temptation to crack on and paint all in one go is huge and we all fall for it. There is a thing called paint bleed, it's when your next colour seeps under the tape. To prevent this you can either paint over the area with the same colour as the bottom layer before applying the colour change, or you can varnish over the tape and area also. This effectively creates a barrier and stops the paint bleed from happening. Painting in thin layers is the key though, you can end up with a ridge line where the tape was if the paint is too thick, and try to paint from the tape onto the surface to stop the tape from lifting up. I always say though if someone is trying a new technique buy the cheapest model you can in the subject you are interested in and practice on that. It doesn't matter if the kit won't go together well, it will save you a lot of heartache if it goes wrong on an expensive kit.

Hi Kevin. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The Pledge clear gives the model a satin finish. It also very good for clear parts as well. A lot of builders use it for this but the cost factor as well, its a lot cheaper to buy a 750ml bottle over an overpriced varnish.

Hi, thanks for the question. An intermediate builder shouldn't have any problems with this build. Even if you decide to light her up. A basic light set up is all you need to get a really nice effect. I would suggest that you paint the hull before assembly, it just makes it easier. Also you may want to leave off the propellers until the end. They have small contact points and can come off easily when knocked. Take care when cleaning up the handrails, the plastic is thin which can snap when cutting them off the sprues. And the final thing are the tennis courts. Dry fit the clear parts first, they can be a little tricky. Building these ships can look daunting but they are broken down into little subasembiles for the most part.

Hi Malcolm, I build all the time and like most of us, storage is a problem. My builds are displayed on rotation and I will swap out some of the older builds and place them on the loft/ antic, I also give them away to family and friends. My wife is into the hobby too; my only problem there is she raids my stash for a kit to build.
