Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.

I love how righteous and straightforward Concubine Yue is. She cuts through all the crap and is fair. As she said, she has what she wanted which is the emperor's love and affection. She doesn't need to battle with the empress like most dramas. Their partnership as wives is refreshing to see.

Refreshing yes but I felt that the empress was not satisfied with the arrangement. Concubine Yue did at one point try to console her but what I can say is both married a good man. The emperor loved them both.

the Empress's unhappiness came from the fact that she and the Emperor did not marry each other for love as Concubine Yue and the Emperor had. as a matter of fact, Yue was not a Concubine at all, she was the Emperor's first wife, while the Emperor married Empress Xuan for political reasons. he respected and loved her, he cared for her and has children with her, but the Empress wasn't happy because firstly she never wanted to be an Empress, secondly she knew that Yue was much fit to be the Empress and the Third Prince was much suite to be the Crown Prince, and lastly she knew that all she was doing was come in between the Emperor and his only true love. even if the two of them were accepting and welcoming of her, he presence made things awkward.

It's more then that, the empress and concubine Yue are more like the good cop bad cop. The two of the have such great love and respect for each other. The two of them compliment each other quite well, they make up for the others weakness. The empress may not have the emperor's love but she has his deepest respect and admiration.

@@georgiabrennichi I think so too...the way he reacts whenever his uncle is mentioned is heartbreaking...the way he reacts when she calls him...her nephew is another clue. I think she watched as her ex-husband killed her entire family...including their son. She wanted to protect the last descendant of the Huo family so she disappeared with him...and returned when he was older this way his identity was hidden. I just hope when he finally gets his revenge it doesn't cost him Niao Niao.

The only saving grace about this...is the fact that Niao Niao will never give him her heart because she's already given her heart to Ling Buyi. I'm really hoping when he returns that she crushes stalker Yuan's heart like a bug...and leaves him heartbroken.

That's what I love about her. Concubine Yue is straightforward woman with beauty and brains. She knows the importance of power but she also knows her responsibility towards the nation. Unlike other dramas where empress and concubine often involved in devious schemes for the throne and acts like as mere tools to covet power for their families and relatives, she and empress both genuinely cares about their own royal family and country.
