Warren needs to have his own master class on the guitar.

That is a great tutorial - especially the right hand muting part, which when mastered, absolutely changes the tonal quality to a much richer sound.

Even if he never formed Government Mule, his playing and singing with the Allman Brothers Band alone, was phenomenal, note for note, a remarkable musician. Stay healthy and blessed, I hope you are around for many years to come. Thanks.

I've been hearing a lot about muting lately. As a bass player I saw a lot of people using foam at the bridge or something around the nut. Two different kinds of muting for different results. What you don't play is as important as what you do play. I always palm muted naturally especially with a pick. That was a perfect explanation. Thanks Warren. I LOVE the slide solo in Blue Sky. One of my Favorites.

Very helpful. Thanks. I put glass slide on my middle finger (Bonnie Raitt) and lay index finger on strings behind it to reduce some noise. I'll have to try muting on other side now. Thanks!

Most traditional Delta-style players (re: Elmore James, Muddy Waters, so many others) did not care whether it had overtones or not. They just went with the jangling sound of Miss- issippi bottleneck. Not to criticize Warren at all - far be it for me, I love the guy - but the modern style with the right hand muting is not the only way to play slide. Elmore could just kill you with that open D tuned guitar ripping with a metal slide. It's just another way of expressing the blues. Duane Allman really ushered in modern slide guitar and Warren is a master at it. As he says, it's very clear and clean, no harmonic overtones. But some- times perfect isn't the way to go. Jangle on, you Elmore disciples! And thank you, Warren, for the excellent short lesson on your style.

larry geetar not only Elmore but Hound Dog Taylor and JB Hutto had those nasty overtones too. Love that stuff!!!!!
@wittvonwitt44036 жыл бұрын
All depends on context of band. Elmore and Hounddog played in a trio so over tones would sound good. Warren plays in larger enables so he needs to be cleaner

I’ve said this before, there really is no wrong way to play a guitar… It is an instrument of personal expression and music theory and techniques is just that.

Elmore James, Robert Johnson, and Muddy Waters didn’t mute. It’s just the old school bottleneck style. Duane Allman ushered in modern slide technique with right hand muting and that’s what Warren, Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth and many others do. It’s just a different style. Jangle vs No Jangle. Both are wonderful when played well.
