Friedrich Nietzsche went viral back in 1882 when he stated, "God is dead."
In today's reaction video, we reflect on the lyrics of the song God is Dead by Black Sabbath. This is when Ozzy returned to the fold to work on the album titled 13.

Sola Melodica exists to uncover a glimmer of God in the art form of music. We focus primarily on hard rock, metal, punk, alternative, and occasionally outlaw country.
Good News and Bad News
Typically people want the bad news first.
The bad news is that we are all sinners. You are a sinner and I am a sinner. God’s creation was perfect. Our original ancestors, Adam & Eve, had direct access to God. He visited them and they would hang out together.
God is perfect and He created a perfect people.
Sadly, sin entered this perfect creation through an act of rebellion. That one act of rebellion threw everything into chaos. Immediately, they were cognizant of their sin. They worked to cover their nakedness and began to pass blame.
A curse entered the earth and now every person born would be born under that sinful curse.
Many people will argue that at least they are not Hitler or Stalin. Most of us are not serial killers! We’re in relatively decent shape, or so we think.
It’s not that simple, though.
As Steve Taylor wrote in his song Jesus Is For Losers, “They don’t grade here on a curve, we both know what we deserve.”
I am guilty of sin and you are guilty of sin. “What sin?” you ask. Lying, stealing, envy, lust, the list goes on and on. Each of which knocks us off of our “pedestal” of perfection.
If we boil this down to a court session we would be proven guilty. The prosecutor would present indisputable evidence of our misdeeds and transgressions.
Our good works don’t offset our sin.
Plus, there is no statute of limitations on our sin.
Justice demands recompense. The verdict would be swift and the judgment severe.
The Good News
God had a plan all along. True justice could not ignore these iniquities and transgression. The penalty had to sufficiently cover every sin that was committed in the past and any sin that would be committed in the future.
Yes, all of them.
As soon as the original sin (thanks Adam & Eve) was committed God put His plan into motion.
Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, came to earth sinless and perfect. He lived His life free of sin and transgression. He healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the hungry, and loved fearlessly.
He was the perfect sacrifice for our sin. A lamb without spot or blemish was sentenced to die a brutal death on our behalf.
Jesus was tortured without mercy. He was mocked, spat upon, cursed, and deserted by His friends. The beating, according to Isaiah, was so ghastly that He could not be recognized as a human (Isaiah 52:14). He died a horrific death, gasping for air, nailed to a cross.
His death was only one part of the redemption story. The best part was death could not keep Him. He defeated death and conquered hell.
It’s written, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
The resurrection did not transpire until justification (justice), in the eyes of God, was achieved. The punches, whipping, cursing, crown of thorns, nailing, and betrayal were for you and were for me.
What Jesus endured was more violent and appalling than anything Quentin Tarantino could envision.
The price for our sins has been paid. There is no double jeopardy in the Kingdom of God. Our sin is judged in Christ.
That, my friend, is Good News!
What’s our part to play in this Gospel plan? Not much, actually.
We acknowledge that we’re sinners and in need of a savior. We recognize that we’re incapable of saving ourselves and need a rescuer. We repent of our sin and ask God for forgiveness. We accept the atoning sacrifice and redemption that is found only in Jesus Christ.
I recommend that you look up Psalm 51 and read it. It’s about a man who committed adultery and then had the husband murdered to cover his sin. His heartfelt and sincere prayer just might be the inspiration you need to form your own prayer to God.
Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved!

Full quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?"

Ozzy came up to Geezer with the chorus God Is Dead, Geezer said you can't just keep saying God Is Dead, so he wrote the rest. To me it's about a suicide bomber, the rain turns red, to me it's really obvious. Anyways yes 13 is an awesome album, a lot like Master and Vol. 4.

Man, I really enjoy your analysis of these songs. I'm a life-long Sabbath nut and have always been fascinated with their lyrics, regardless of who was holding the microphone or who was writing the lyrics. Someone else already mentioned the "The Devil You Know" album. The closing track on that one is called "Breaking Into Heaven", which is about "Lucifer's Angels" returning to take over Heaven after being exiled. Not very uplifting, but a very thought provoking track that I'd love to hear your assessment of.

People always think "Evil" when talking about Black Sabbath. But they've never actually been evil. Anytime they talk about Satan it's in a negative light. They wear crosses and use cross imagery in a lot of their art. Ozzy constantly says "God bless you" to his fans at shows, etc. Even this song with a title most people would see as solid evidence, he flat out denies God being dead. In an interview Geezer Butler said it was written to prove that God is actually alive and well. Part of the lyrics in this song "To safeguard my philosophy Until my dying breath I transfer from reality Into a mental death I empathize with enemies Until the timing's right With God and Satan at my side From darkness will come light." To me, this has always sounded as a confession that the band uses darkness and dark themes to actually deliver a message of light. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say Black Sabbath is a religious band we should hear on FLR or anything like that. But more like the other side of the coin. A religious band shows us the good of God while Black Sabbath shows us the evil of Satan.

As a Reverend, thank you for having an open mind to this song. People have mostly Black Sabbath all wrong. If you listen to their song After Forever, it will really answer all the truth about what they are really singing about. The band just wanted to let the world know it's not all peace, love, and happiness? Which is a hard reality to accept? But it's real and weren't afraid to let you know. God Bless you!

Also forgot to mention, you should delve into some W.A.S.P. if you haven't already. Blackie Lawless, who penned some of the most obscene lyrics in metal is now a Christian. Probably the first inkling of his change was a song from 2002s "Dying For The World" called "Hallowed Ground", his reaction September 11th. Later songs that further cemented his conversion were "Godless Run", about his return to his faith, and "Golgotha", sang from the perspective of the "good thief" that was crucified next to Christ. Would love to see you react to these.

“ you cannot exhume a soul”. I think about forensic science when I read that sentence .....when they’re looking for more clues sometimes they need to exhume the body to find more answers……But you cannot exhume the soul..... which means, no one can come back from the grave and tell us if God is still alive or even exists. We can only go by faith. I also think too that it could mean that when the soul is dead there’s no coming back from that… If your soul is dead it can’t be exhumed... and a person ceases to exist all together.

Why does proving the authenticity of the bible prove that is the inerrant word of God? Not that we know who wrote much of the New Testament, and certainly not the gospels, despite claims by apologists that they are written by eye witnesses. I think the term you may have been groping for was textual criticism, not that this proves anything, although it applies a veneer of intellectual garnish. I was brought up a Catholic, and at my uncle's funeral a few years ago I was reminded of the lyric "Give me the wine, I don't want bread." The good Irish father certainly was hitting the communion wine during the extended liturgy to the point where he sounded like he was slurring his words toward the end.

Thanks for listening. That's really a great question. I often get push back on my stance when it comes to music. Yes, I do consider myself a fan. Some songs are easier to spiritually "digest" than others. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend singing Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in a Sunday morning worship service :). Art, in general (movies, books, music) often is separated into two buckets and I think that is incorrect. There can be lines drawn but that often has to do with conscience. I have friends who abandoned metal altogether. I am able, by grace, to keep things in proper perspective. I really like your question and not certain that I adequately answered it. Gods and Religions only exist when people open their mouth and talks about them. Through the ages there have been cultures that now are vanished and with them their Gods. The many Gods in varying Cultures that exists today will also sometime in the future be gone, but it will take a longer time because there are a lot more living people today in these cultures. Gods of today are mortal just like the long time forgotten ancient Gods.

I think you may have overlooked the potential genius of this song as its meant to be a bit of a swerve. From a analytical religious perspective, In re-review I think Geezer may have written the song (unknowingly?) from the perspective of the "Son of Man" in His tomb, after crucifixion He is consciously aware of not only his death, and the ramifications of his position in the Trinity, in death "God is Dead" speaking in the third person. If by the narrative of the gospel, He would feel both his human death and the death of God. He would feel the highest level of human loss and disconnect in the death of "God", the goal of " a perfect conciousness" looking for answers by experiencing death. Absolute genius narrative.Listen to it from that perspective, and you may find youself picking up the pieces after your mind is blown.

Enjoyed your interesting perspective on this controversial song. I don't agree with everything but informative. Co-written by Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne. It speaks of a conflicted man, who seeing all the evil in the world asks the question is God dead? But in the end believes God isn't dead. This song is heavily influenced by Ozzy's views on religion and the state of the world. IMO this song is very in line with Sabbath's early years. Subbed.

Disagree with the Bible being historic and accurate. First, we know that during the time of Constantine, the Bible was massively edited and changed. Things were removed, added, edited to fit what they (at the time) wanted it to say. The Dead Sea Scrolls also back that up. Names in the modified Bible mentioned in one passage have entire books in their name in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Judas has an entire book in his name and he was NOT the traitor. Jesus told him that he needed to do what he did in order to make things happen as they should and Judas didn't want to do it. The Dead Sea scrolls are much closer to the time of Jesus than the King James version as well. That's proven and documented. An even better example, if I tell you a story and then you tell 5 others, then they tell 5 others, etc... that alone will change details. Now multiple that by decades, centuries, and thousands of people or more later, who then wrote it down. It's not going to be anywhere as accurate as the Dead Sea Scrolls. So anyone who thinks the King James Bible is a historic record is only fooling themselves. It was rewritten to give the churches more power and fool us into thinking we had to go through them to speak with God when we absolutely do not. I prefer older, original versions. Not the hacked ones.

We are also capable of doing good. We're not born in sin just because some nude couple in the past messed up. I'm sorry I completely disagree with the Bible on this.

Thanks for chiming in even though we're on separate pages. I agree we are "Capable" of doing good but we don't always do so. Rwanda, Auschwitz, Pol Pot, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, Che....

@@SolaMelodica my view on what Black Sabbath general try to say all these decades is that this world is full of violence hate crimed wars corruption lust and we try to be good but it s not easy.I dont know if there is god or not but i try to be a good person not because of fear of hell or whatever but because i believe that all people must be nice and polite to others.I love this band btw

I don't know.. think you may have missed the mark a little bit..I really believe the lyrics start as a question and end as a statement... Very last word of the song is.."right!".. after repeating 4 times the statement..."God is dead"...Didn't see that shown on this channel's reading of the lyrics..Satan desires to put doubt in people's minds. This song is definitely a message of pure evil.

Thanks for the insight and for being so kind in your disagreement -- refreshing :) it's vital for Christians to constantly renew their minds. satan is not omnipresent but I agree when given the opportunity a twisting of words happens. blessings!

@@jrees1082 Ending in a statement or not ozzy himself has said many times that its about him not believing that god is dead and the struggles around him that cause the doubt to even ask the question but that its a very obvious statement that he knows in his heart that god is not dead and its meant to help people going through the same struggles and questions come out knowing that he is not dead. I feel that much is obvious and also stated by ozzy himself

@@jrees1082 how you think its a message of pure evil is actually funny because you can tell thats what you want it to be and are hoping it was but it very clearly isnt..however your free to see it how your want but going by ozzy and the band themselves they all believe in god and have said its more of a message of questions and doubts and faith prevailing in the end to self assure
