You can go to an art supply store such as Pat Catan's and purchase the stretcher sticks and primed (gesso coated) canvas. You will save yourself a ton of time and probably money by doing this rather than tearing everything apart and then put it back together again. You buy the stretcher sticks by the piece so you can have your finished piece any size you want...you decide.

Definitely an option, thanks. There’s a bunch of ways this can be done to suit each persons needs.

👍 Now I understand how to do this. I think spraying some 3M adhesive on the back of the frame may help to apply the canvas before finishing it off with staples.

Definitely! I make every effort to make sure my vinyl is aligned straight so that as long as my canvas is centered, it’s not a big concern
@TrumblebeeMom7 жыл бұрын
This project came out very nice. It looks rather tricky to line the canvas up nicely afterward, though. Perhaps waiting to do the pencil tracing around the outside and trimming until after the transfer has been done would be easier. You could stretch the canvas more tightly with a little something to hold onto, as well. Just a thought.

Do you have to have staple gun? Is there another way to reapply the canvas to the frame? Also could you spray paint the canvas first?
@ElleBeeCreates4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never used anything but a staple gun, but you can try other methods and see how they work. I’ve painted the canvases with water based paints but I’ve not done it with spray paint. You definitely want to make sure it was completely dry before you put it in your heat press or ironed it.

Okay, mind blown.. lol. I did not know I could further press with my heat press once I removed the carrier sheet. Is there a rule of thumb for how many times you can do that? Like If there are 4 different colors, can i still do that without harming the first color once the carrier sheet is removed? Is the key to make sure the teflon sheet is used? LOVE this video! VERY informative! Thank you!
@ElleBeeCreates7 жыл бұрын
No rule of thumb but the trick it to only press each color for a second or two. The risk is the HTV shrinking. Check out my channel, the top video is on layering multiple colors, I’ve got lots of tips in that one, you can fast forward to the middle where i shoe application. And yes, always use a Teflon sheet! I keep mine attached to my platen with magnet clips!

Can I ask, why do you not heat press for the 10 seconds with each layer. Meaning heat press the saying for 10 seconds, then 10 seconds for the heart. Would that be to much heat on the canvas and would it melt a bit or discolor? I loved your video, but that was my only question.
@ElleBeeCreates6 жыл бұрын
Because then the first layer you pressed would get way too much heat. You’re only supposed to press the vinyl for 15 seconds max, more than that and you’re over cooking the vinyl which will cause it to shrink and can damage the adhesive. You just need to press each layer for a second or two to tack it down and then finish the time once all layers are in place.

@ElleBeeCreates7 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen it done but I haven’t tried it myself. The biggest thing, no matter which paint you try, would be to make sure you allow it plenty of time to dry

I don’t understand why not just use a regular frame? Why take apart a perfectly good canvas?
@ElleBeeCreates7 жыл бұрын
I make lots of signs with frames, this is just a fun technique to try. Not everyone has access to tools to build a frame, or the space to make one, or the desire. It’s a fun quick way to create some personalized decor.
@shelly33177 жыл бұрын
I would also think it would be much less expensive to do it this way, since you are getting a frame AND canvas to use for the HTV. You can get packs of like 10 canvases like this at Walmart for next to nothing. I have priced frames on their own and they are pretty pricey. :)

So I tried this and for some reason my tails, which are thin, of some of my letters turned all squiggly, like they are trying to press down into the texture of the canvas. Any idea why that happened? Also, The back side of the canvas is a little darker but seems smoother. Can I use that side? Would HTV adhere ok to the back? Thanks for any suggestions.
@ElleBeeCreates6 жыл бұрын
you could use the back side. What time and temp were you using? Sounds like it was too hot
@findroots71516 жыл бұрын
I used a regular iron and used the linen/cotton setting. I applied firm pressure on 3 separate sections and held for about 30 to 60 seconds each.
@ElleBeeCreates6 жыл бұрын
I would try lowering the temp of your iron and pressing for less time. You only need to press your iron down for 15-20 seconds per section. Cotton/linen is often too hot as well. A laser thermometer can verify the temp for you

Idea to make easier on cutting the staple put a tiny screw driver under staple raise staple up a little then go around and snip it. Or maybe a staple remover might help raise it up a little to be able to snip it easier.
@ElleBeeCreates5 жыл бұрын
Problem is, with this brand of canvas anyway, the wood is so soft that the staples are embedded so deeply that I can't get a staple remover or screw driver up under the staple as the canvas is pushed up around the side due to the depth of the staple. Other brands that may be possible, but it just doesn't work with this brand of canvas unfortunately.
@deborah47252 жыл бұрын
If your cutting off the canvas around the sides anyway then why not go around with a knife instead of taking all the staples out and then cutting off the canvas where the staples were in the first place? Seems a waste of time to me.
@laurenlyon52737 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the awesome tutorial! How long would you say to press and on what temperature? Thanks so much!
@ElleBeeCreates7 жыл бұрын
It’s going to depend on the brand of HTV your using. Every brand is a little different. I’m using Siser Easyweed so I’m pressing at 305 for 15 seconds.
@tkidd06225 жыл бұрын
Can you use regular transfer vinyl?
@ElleBeeCreates5 жыл бұрын
Adhesive vinyl? Sure, it just doesn’t stick to canvas as well in my opinion and doesn’t give the same painted on look, but you can absolutely use it.

@carston9147 жыл бұрын
Do I have to use a heat press to get the vinyl to stick?
@ElleBeeCreates7 жыл бұрын
When using heat transfer vinyl, you will need a heat press or an iron to get it to adhere. The adhesive is heat and pressure activated.
@carston9147 жыл бұрын
ElleBee Creates Thanks! I was wondering if an iron would work. I don’t have a heat press.
@dawnmason95587 жыл бұрын
You really have to press hard on an iron so an ironing board is useless as it bends. Use a pressing board on a table instead. The HTV is adhered permanently once you can see the weave pattern of the canvas through the vinyl.
@sworley19564 жыл бұрын
I was told to spray your canvas with adhesive spray let it dry and your vinyl will stick perfectly

If it will fit under your staples, yes, it wouldn’t fit under mine, they were in so deep and the canvas was pushed up around then
@robinshumate43796 жыл бұрын
what is the temp. you used? i was trying to see on your press but i couldn't
@ElleBeeCreates6 жыл бұрын
Time and temp are determined by the brand and type of HTV you’re pressing. For example, Siser Easyweed is 305 for 10-15 seconds, Siser Glitter is 320 for 15 seconds, Thermoflex Plus is 320 for 20-30 seconds. Always follow the directions for time and temp given by the manufacturer of the exact HTV you’re applying

You can certainly do that if cost is that big of a factor to you. I love how well HTV adheres to canvas seeing as it’s made for textiles, whereas “651” is designed for hard, solid substrates. And extra $1 in materials and a lot of time savings is worth it to me for a classy finished product that I don’t have to fight to apply or worry about lifting with age.
