In this series, we'll be breaking down the arrangement into its essential elements: Rhythm and Harmony. This first video will focus on the outline of the entire arrangement, starting with a wide-angle lens and gradually narrowing down.
The chart features a four-line score, including saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm instruments. Throughout the tutorial, I want you to listen closely to the music and pay attention to three key aspects: the melody, the harmony, and the counter lines. These elements are crucial in understanding how Baylock crafts each section.
The style of the chart suits the tune well, as it follows a long-form AABA structure with a halftime funk feel. Although the music is moving at a moderate tempo of around 92 half notes per minute, the halftime feel gives it a unique groove.
By downloading the score and listening to it a few times, you'll be able to absorb the fundamental components of the arrangement without getting bogged down in the details. Think of it as flying a drone over a city - you get an overview of the entire landscape before diving into specific buildings.
In the upcoming tutorials, we'll delve deeper into each section, analyzing the harmony, voicing, and other intricate details. Studying scores like this is an excellent way to learn and internalize music. Feel free to leave any questions or suggestions in the comments below.
Stay tuned for more tutorials as we explore "It's All Right With Me" together. Happy learning!
