first of all osmosis is process of transformation of water from high concentration to low concentration through a selectively semi-permiable membrane . lets suppose we have 2 beakers A and B where A has 100ml pure water and B has 100 ml saltwater solution. Then water will try to transfer from A to B because A has higher concentration of water as compared to B. In both of the beakers we have 1 atm pressure applied naturally [atmospheric pressure]. Now if we apply some pressure extra on B then the transformation of water from A to B will gradually decrease and if more pressure is applied then at a certain time no water will transfer from A to B . If further more pressure is applied then the water will start flowing from B to A . This is what we called Reverse Osmosis [ transformation of water from low concentration to high concentration due to extra applied pressure on low concentration beaker B ]. since, B contains salt water solution , the water is now transferring from salt water to pure water of A . Now lets consider that the salt water is sea water , then we can clearly see that pure water from that sea water is getting separated due to reverse osmosis . this is how it can act as a purifying procedure ................

very low TDS is bad and ro should never be used directly that is why they have TDS control they can add little unfiltered water or add minerals them self which can be done using mineral cartridge but its a consumable
