Curious on a new membrane do you need to flush it with permeate before using it ?

coming from a licensed plumber, put a 5 gallon potable expansion tank between tank and RO. you will get zero chatter and the pump will only run when it needs to.

For a 50 to 100 gallon per hour, what is the price difference between a homemade solutions and a commercial solutions sold for maple SAP.

The difference is a fancy control panel and a flashy name And price versus if you know what you're doing and understand how these work a more reasonable price a more basic control panel membranes that last a lot longer and are a lot more efficient and a way cheaper build price.

Hello everybody. I know it has been over 5 years that this video was posted but it is so useful. However, could anybody provide the specifications of the pieces that he is using to build the equipment?

Between 6:00 and 7:25 you mention how you keep recirculating the concentrate at higher flow rates so the filter is more efficient. Do you think this idea applies to a lower pressure system (80 to 110 psi from an Aquatech 8800)? I'm building a system with 5 residential RO membranes that are rated at 150 gallons per day. Thanks so much for sharing all this helpful info! Sap is running in NW Wisconsin!

Yes it would apply to any membranes used for sap or sugar. look at your specs of your membranes and see what the maximum cross flow is. Now with those hundred 50 gallon a day units your rejection rate is probably going to be lower than say an filmtec XLE 4040 for example. Also they make them little under the kitchen sink units like you are speaking of at 500 gallon per day at a price just south of $60 each for the housing and the membrane. Now dollar spent on little membranes versus buying a big membrane I don't think you're going to ever get the efficiency per dollar but if you're only running a small number of taps it's hard to justify buying a big membrane and the big pumps. However look up the specs on a filmtec XLE 4040 that is a 4 in x 40 in membrane I think you're going to be surprised that they are extreme low-energy membranes meaning they will operate at low pressure. Our XLE s we'll start making permeate at around 50 psi but really starting to see production at 100 if we are not in need of crowded our are own tour production we're on that we're on a 225 to 230 PSI at a high flow rate the motor uses less electricity and doesn't have to work as hard but we could run at 125 to 150 psi it would just take longer.none of these numbers are anywhere near the maximum pressure per our membrane factory specifications. Which you can look up on the interweb. Speed another words gallons per minute or gallons per hour without exceeding the factory cross flow rating then enough pressure to push it through without overloading your motor amperageor exceeding the maximum membrane pressure rating and of course the maximum vessel rating.

Thank a lot to share your idea Steve, how GPH can i expect from a system like the second one ?

Great job Very easy to follow. Are these membranes just regular water RO membranes

Hi Ray, The larger model (third option) was originally used by a bigger maple syrup operation, but the other two are water RO membranes.

+Arlie Endsley The pumps and pressure vessels are available from many locations on line including ebay.com, amazon.com, freshwatersystems.com, atlanticro.com, Americanro.com and many others. Key search words would be procon pump and ro pressure vessel. Thank you for checking out our channel!

If you put an elbow right off the pump then a valve, then an adaptor for a larger pipe. When having to prime pump you turn the valve open and pour the sap into the pipe, the when the pump is full you close the valve and turn on pump

Or you could simply mount the pump correctly with the fill plug on the top where it's supposed to be in the first place.
