This is by far and away the easiest cap to make with excellent results. double sided and reversible … This was my 5th attempt from all different sources and it's so satisfying to have that "ah ha" moment after so many disappointments. @@justicefam I don't know what to seem dumb, but mine strip does not pin on from top to bottom on either side? Do I need to make my strip a little longer, I am not an expert sewer and this pattern should be super easy, oh my. You measurements on the pattern are exact, so I don't know what I am doing wrong. Thank you again for this video, it was the best so far as instructions go, and you showed a good angle when you are doing the sewing.

I looked at a # of patterns and chose this one - I did have to adjust the pattern to add 1 inch to the length of the band and also I added 1/2” to the width of the band - as well I reinforced all the inside seams (zig zag) and did the same to the edges of the band (first of all sewing the two sides together (1/4” seam) and then zigzagging before inserting them into the band. I also reinforced the tie where it meets the cap. I am very pleased with the final cap.

If you don’t have a fat quarter, it’s approx 22x18 in. Or, basically, cut a half yard in half on its fold (width not length, b/c you don’t want a skinny 1/4).

Whenever I sew caps that curve around, I gently stretch the material, and it makes sewing the curve easier. :)

Update Oops I read in the written description that you trim away the extra top oval. Silly me I should read first. Lol thank you for sharing you make an excellent sewing teacher. My top oval did not come out even with the sides. It hung past by at least one inch. I had to trim it off. So on my next one I cut the side panel longer hoping that would help but the oval top still hung past again. And I just trimmed even with sides again.

I find if you baste the cap 2 piece together (close to edge) before adding the ties it is easier to sew/add the ties. The cap pieces are not slipping/moving.

I put one piece of the material upright and the piece on top face down like you did but still wrong. I am going to try again as I'm having a thought about it right now. I'm using the revised pattern and added 1.5 on the side band. I can't ever get my side band to meet even with the bottom of the top piece. I'm marking the center to the point of measuring. Are you putting tucks or pleats in the side band when you pin it to the top? I've been pinning straight .

Yes, its a little shorter to have a contour in the back. You can just follow along the contour when you sew or you can trim the hat top down to meet up if you prefer.

I start with a a 2" or 2 1/2" strip then fold in so it ends up about 1/2' any size will work that will cover your seam and allow you to tie

I love this hat and tried to print off a template, the side pieces do not go to the bottom of the hat when they are pined together , they are about an inch shorter. Hi Laurie, the side pieces are a bit shorter, if you sew with the contour it just gives a little more coverage on top. If you would rather, you can trim the top piece shorter to meet up with the sides. I can send you templates by email too if you want. Email me at justicefam@aol.com

Yes, it does come out a little short. You can either sew along that contour line and have a little more coverage on top or trim the top down a bit. HOpe this helps!
