Thank you so much for making this! The Amazon product page should have a link to this video - if you don't want to put it there, at least put a link to the product page in the description here (affiliate or plain) because so many people look at the product and fear it will be difficult to operate. Getting to the "menu" screen was all I needed, but I found this whole video useful. Thanks!!

Does this measure in circuit ESR on caps well, for bad cap testing? Thanks!
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 6 жыл бұрын
SpiderWaffle , In circuit testing in my opinion with the GM328 can be a bit tricky. The quick answer is yes it can, but always be sure to discharge caps before testing. It is useful in checking ESR at a little over 1KHZ but it can't be selected to check up to 100KHZ as some ESR meters.

Hi thanks for the video there seems to be a lot of different versions of the gm328 and the yosoo seems to be very hard to locate online in the uk. are all the gm328 products the same under a different name. I really just want this to identify components that im unsure of and test capacitors. Does this product fully test capacitors or only state esr value?

Yes, there are many different versions although they are similar, I have never taken time to compare them to one another, I only purchased the one like in the video, the first or one of the first versions. They do a great job for what they are and check the caps quite well as shown in my first video. The link in that video description is like the version I have and used in that first video!

Hi! I have a problem here, maybe you can help... Mine is reading capacitance between 2-3 pins but nothing connected, empty... I cannot calibrate it, it reads no capacitance at 1-3 flashing a 0. Normally operating, if I connect a cap at 2-3 it reads at 1-3! If you put a resistor or led it shows capacitance also. Strange!!! Thanks in advance

Sebas Piatti , sorry it has taken so long to respond. We have been moving. I am almost settled in the now and will have time to look at my tester and see if it is anything that is obvious that could cause this issue. I have not come across this. It seems it could be a bad pin on micro controller? or even zif socket having issues?

At right side of the Test socket is the SMT test pad, also have number to Identify each. When test two lead component(resistor, capacitor, inductor), the two lead can select any two test point . if TP1 and TP3 is selected, the Test will enter to” series test mode” when the test is Completes. Else the test is start again by a short press RPEWS. Attention: All ways be sure to discharge capacitors before connecting them to the Tester! The Tester may be damaged before you have switched it on. There is only a little protection at the MCU’s ports. Extra caution is required if you try to test components mounted in a circuit. In either case the equipment should be disconnected from power source and you should be sure, that no residual voltage remains in the equipment. Control by a “rotary pulse encoder with switch” DC JACK square wave & PWM Output interface voltage measurement input interface frequency measurement input interface For SMT component Test Test socket The left six belong to TP1 The middle two belong to TP2 The right six belong to TP3 Self test and Calibration: the self test can be prepared by connecting all three test point together and pushing of the RPEWS, the color of the Tester’s LCD will change to white font and black background. Prompt string “Selftest mode..?”, To begin the self test, the RPEWS must be pressed again within 2 seconds, else the tester will continue with a normal measurement. Now self test is start, the tester will prompt you for next step. Wait for a time until Prompt string “isolate Probes!”, at that time remove the connecting . Tester will wait , until it’s sense the disconnect. Then Tester continue the self test process. If this is the first time use self test(the Transistor Tester is assemble by yourself from scratch ), Tester will soon Prompt string “ 1-||-3 > 100nf” , A capacitor with any capacity between 100nF and 20μF connected to pin 1 and pin 3 is required for the last task of calibration, You should connect the capacitor not before this text is shown. With this capacitor the offset voltage of the analog comparator will be compensated for better measurement of capacity values. special using hints:

Normally the Tester shows the battery voltage with every start. If the voltage fall below a limit, a warning is shown behind the battery voltage. If you use a rechargeable 9V battery, you should replace the battery as soon as possible or you should recharge. the measured supply voltage will be shown in display row two for 1 second with ”VCC=x.xxV”. It cannot repeat often enough, that capacitors should be discharged before measuring. Otherwise the Tester can be damaged before the start button is pressed. If you try to measure components in assembled condition, the equipment should be all ways disconnected from power source. Furthermore you should be sure, that no residual voltage reside in the equipment. Every electronical equipment has capacitors inside! If you try to measure little resistor values, you should keep the resistance of plug connectors and cables in mind. The quality and condition of plug connectors are important, also the resistance of cables used for measurement. The same is in force for the ESR measurement of capacitors. With poor connection cable a ESR value of 0.02Ω can grow to 0.61Ω. You should not expect very good accuracy of measurement results, especially the ESR measurement and the results of inductance measurement are not very exact Components with problems: You should keep in mind by interpreting the measurement results, that the circuit of the Transistor Tester is designed for small signal semiconductors. In normal measurement condition the measurement current can only reach about 6 mA. Power semiconductors often make trouble by reason of residual current with the identification and the measurement of junction capacity value. The Tester often cannot deliver enough ignition current or holding current for power Thyristors or Triacs. So a Thyristor can be detected as NPN transistor or diode. Also it is possible, that a Thyristor or Triacis detected as unknown. Another problem is the identification of semiconductors with integrated resistors. So the base -emitter diode of a BU508D transistor cannot be detected by reason of the parallel connected internal 42Ω resistor. Therefore the transistor function cannot be tested also. Problem with detection is also given with power Darlington transistors. We can find often internal base - emitter resistors, which make it difficult to identify the component with the undersized measurement current. Measurement of PNP and NPN transistors: For normal measurement the three pins of the transistor will be connect in any order to the measurement inputs of the Transistor Tester. After pushing the RPEWS, the Tester shows in row1 the type (NPN or PNP), a possible integrated protecting diode of the Collector - Emitter path and the sequence of pins. The diode symbol is shown with correct polarity. Row 2 shows the current amplification factor (hfe=...) and the Base - Emitter threshold voltage. You should know, that the Tester can measure the amplification factor with two different circuits, the common Emitter and the common Collector circuit (Emitter follower). Only the higher result is shown on the LCD. With Germanium transistors often a Collector cutoff current ICEO with current less base or a Collector residual current ICES with base hold to the emitter level is measured. Measurement of JFET and D-MOS transistors: Because the structure of JFET type is symmetrical, the Source and Drain of this transistor cannot be differed. Normally one of the parameter of this transistor is the current of the transistor with the Gate at the same level as Source. This current is often higher than the current, which can be reached with the measurement circuit of the Transistor Tester with the 680Ω resistor. For this reason the 680Ω resistor is connected to the Source. Thus the Gate get with the growing of current a negative bias voltage. The Tester reports the Source current of this circuit and additionally the bias voltage of the Gate. So various models can be differed. The D-MOS transistors (depletion type) are measured with the same method. You should know for enhancement MOS transistors (P-E-MOS or N-E-MOS), that the measurement of the gate threshold voltage (Vth) is more difficult with little gate capacity values. You can get a better voltage value, if you connect a capacitor with a value of some nF parallel to the gate/source. The gate threshold voltage will be find out with a drain current of about 3.5mA for a P-E-MOS and about 4mA for a N-E-MOS Function menu descriptions:

1. Switch off Enter this Function Tester will shut down immediately. 2. Transistor Transistor test, it’s also the default Function at switch on. 3. Frequency Measurement of frequency, For frequencies below 25kHz the normal measurement is followed by a measurement of period time. This additional measurement is only followed after a normal frequency measurement. 4.f-Generator Signal generation, this Function can output square wave .with various of frequency to choice. 5. 10-bit PWM The function ”10-bit PWM” (Pulse Width Modulation) generates a fixed frequency(7812.5Hz) with selectable pulse width at the pin TP2. With a short key press (< 0.5 s) the pulse width is increased by 1%, with a longer key press the pulse width is increased by 10%. If 99% is overstepped, 100% is subtracted from the result. The function can be exit with a very long key press (> 1.3 s). 6. C+ESR@TP1:3 The additional function ”C+ESR@TP1:3” selects a stand-alone capacity measurement with ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) measurement at the test pins TP1 and TP3. Capacities from 2μF up to 50mF can be measured. Because the measurement voltage is only about 300mV , in most cases the capacitor can be measured ”in circuit” without previous disassembling. The series of measurements can be finished with a long press of RPEWS. 7. Rotary encoder With the function ”rotary encoder” a rotary encoder can be checked. The three pins of the rotary encoder must be connected in any order to the three probes of the transistor tester before the start of the function. After starting the function the rotary knob must be turned not too fast. If the test is finished successfully, the connection of the encoder switches is shown symbolic in display row 2. The tester finds out the common contact of the two switches and shows, if the indexed position has both contacts in open state (’o’) or in closed state (’C’). A rotary encoder with open switches at the indexed positions is shows in row 2 for two seconds as ”1-/-2-/-3 o”. This type of encoder has the same count of indexed positions as count of pulses for every turn. Of course the pin number of the right common contact is shown in the middle instead of ’2’. If also the closed switches state is detected at the indexed positions, the row 2 of the display is also shown as ”1-2-3 C” for two seconds.
@thecentralscrutinizer5105
@thecentralscrutinizer5105 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know any rotary encoder, which have the switches always closed at any indexed position. The interim state of the switches between the indexed positions is also shown in row 2 for a short time (< 0.5s) without the characters ’o’ or ’C’. 8.Selftest With the menu function ”Selftest” a full self test with calibration is done. With that call all the test functions T1 to T7 (if not inhibited with the NO TEST T1 T7 option) and also the calibration with external capacitor is done every time. 9. Voltage Voltage measurement, Because a 10:1(180K:20K) voltage divides is connected , the maximum external voltage can be 50V, The measurement can also be exit with a extra long key press (> 4 seconds). 10. Show data The function ,Show Data” shows besides the version number of the software the data of the calibration. These are the zero resistance (R0) of the pin combination 1:3, 2:3 and 1:2 .In addition the resistance of the port outputs to the 5V side (RiHi) and to the 0V side (RiLo) are shown. The zero capacity values (C0) are also shown with all pin combinations (1:3, 2:3,1:2 and 3:1, 3:2 2:1). At last the correction values for the comparator (REF C) and for the reference voltage (REF R) are also shown. Every page is shown for 15 seconds, but you canselect the next page by a key press or a right turn of the rotary encoder. With a left turn of the rotary encoder you can repeat the output of the last page or return to the previous page. 11. FrontColor This function can change the color of the font, the 16bit color is encode in RGB(565) format, that mean red maximum = 31, green maximum = 63,blue maximum = 31 respectively. In the function, a short time press can index the base color to change, turn left decrease it value and turn right increase it value. A long time press will save the Result and exit the function, please keep in mind the FrontColor and the backcolor cannot be the same. This will case the LCD show nothing. If this happens, you need to do a Selftest , how to enter the Selftest is descriptions at Page 2. Selftest will change the back Color to black and font color to white automatically. When the Selftest is finish . you will have the chance to modify the color . 12. BackColor This is function is the same as the FrontColor except it’s change the background color . 13. 1-||-3 This function can series Measurement the capacitance at TP1 ,TP3, this function can Measurement very small capacitor. A long time press will exit the function. 14. 1- - 3 This function can series Measurement the Resistance and inductance at TP1 ,TP3, A long time press will exit the function ...and finally heres a link for more information/ data about the Transistortester www.mikrocontroller.net/articles/AVR-Transistortester PS:, this new 2020 blackboard version I bought off eBay..... for $8.85, and it arrived completely assembled and ready & working. , last 3 I ordered since 2003 were all "Kits" and a wonderful DIY project, although it was a relief to have this assembled simply because I've been way ahead of soldering for beginners, and find it tedious,boring & laborious soldering 18 basic 1/8 watt If you find yourself with a solder ur self trans-checker kit, no matter what version, there is always going to be 3 SMD components board, topside, bottom of test bench, the extra coolio thing with these 3 SMD's is you don't even have to use/solder these 3 components (a zener, a SM diode and a 6 leg distribution IC SRV05-4 to the board if not comfortable soldering tinyass SMD components yet. but you'll lose the tst bench surge protection (testing a cap and forgot to discharge it first)

Do you know if a replacement Atmega 328 IC is available? I believe I must have tried to test a cap that still had a charge on it. Now only display I get is unkown or damaged part regardless what I test. Thanks in advance Walt
@kimtyson9101

Walter - I did the same with mine - was using it to test the capacitor on an old analogue scope - got excited and forgot to make sure the caps were drained - so hit the tester with 80V or more. Bizzarely only one of the pins was damaged, I could still measure across 1 and 2. Anyway, I bought some ATMEGA 328s from AliExpress and used two Arduino UNOs to download a hex file I found with the new firmware version 1.13 onto the chip. Then I plugged it into the component tester and it works again! It was my favourite tester so I am glad I have it back. You use one Arduino UNO or a Nano to re-program the chip in an old UNO that has a DIP socket - aka the same chip. In fact you can just update the existing chip in the UNO if you have one laying around and use that in the tester. There are a few tutorials on youtube to do this. Version 1.13 takes a lot longer to turn off when doing a single test so I am looking for the source for this code - hopefully written as a sketch. Hope this helps - I know its been 2 years but you might still have it in a box.

How do you know where to put which pins where on the tester? I've been testing diodes, and just just randomly choose which holes to put the pins in. Really have no idea what causes it to work or not though.

HI, They alternate 1,2,3,1,2 etc. So diodes can go to either combo of 2 pins for ex: 1-2, 1-3, 2-3. You have more than one spot to help for each pin to accommodate many varying shaped components. Same thing for transistor etc. Any pin labeled 1, 2, 3. So it's like below... [1] [2] [3] [2] [1] [2] [3] [1] [2] [3] [2] [1] [2] [3]

The rotary encoder can be fitted to the board and you can run through the menu with it. The firmware is a little old. (2022). The latest is 1.13k. Already old and not kept up to date. However there is a " m" version but you can update it with that. I would not bother to do that. The "m" range have gone way overboard with new processors etc. It never will be a proffesional. Very very good for diy.

WoW, that one in video looks friggin ancient compared to the new 2020 version , my 2020 model is lacking the display contrast/brightness controls now, that sux. seems the more I use this 2020 version, more I'm liking my older, better made, adjustable display controls. chipset version on this 2020 is 1.13k, ya know if the makers of this device would ever manage to put together some form of a manual for this, I'd probably utilize it more. trying to find my older, red board tester, same design, but 5 years old, would like to see what the firmware version is on it I think that one still has your contrast/brightness controls in case you turn background and fonts th same color...lol But here are your key significant changes for the newer 2020 model: New 2020 board is now Black, same circuit design, BUT now all components are SMD type.somebody finally started putting together somewhat of a manual, better than the nothing papers it used to ome with. I don't like that they added a 2nd test cap, especially because it's some tiny rated cap I'll never have. when you do a self test. Original self test was nice, just needed a simple cap >than a 50 mic cap if I remember correctly what I'd like to know is, does this tester ever get flashed for updates??, and if there's anybody out there that has one of these newer 2020 versions and figured out where the display contrast controls are, drop me a note to educate me please, the menu has some added features, but are useless to me, and what is"C(uf)-Correction" thats new on the menu, seems to step up capacitance with knob turn

Dear sir upto how many capacitance (uf) can we measure of this meter?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 6 жыл бұрын
zeno kamei , That is a good question. I have taken a lot of big caps I have in parallel and it reads it. I have not found the limit. The most I have tried is 22.5 mf or 22500uf. Has anyone else in the community gone further with this?

Thrifty Tool Shed, i am thinking to buy from ebay... My measuring range 1uf to 47000uf...just wanna know before i buy.

zeno kamei, If you would like tomorrow I can put enough in parallel to make sure the one I have goes up to the upper end of your needed range?
@ThriftyToolShed

zeno kamei, I connected over 50mf (52,000uf) in parallel and mine tested it fine. It does take up to 15 seconds or better to reach the charge curve of this high value before showing results.

good night Sir , a Question how do short 123 pin can you esplain
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 5 жыл бұрын
Ulises Aguilar, you need a very low resistance path between, for example in the video,I used one side of three different resistors in pins 1,2,3 and then held them tightly together to form a very low resistance between the pins.

@@kka10001 Yes that is correct, as stated I used 3 resistors in the video and just used the wire lead itself to short out, same thing!

Can you use this to test components in a circuit without removing them?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed Жыл бұрын
I have had luck testing capacitors and some transistors in circuit, but it all depends on the circuit. Since this is an auto tester and test for many varying components with different characteristics it will identify as the best match and sometimes with inductors and resistors in the circuit it is simply impossible to get a true reading. I have better luck using the peak ESR70 or another special purpose ESR/Capacitor tester in circuit since it is looking for exact components and its characteristics. The best thing to use in circuit and especially when comparing between 2 boards is the curve tracer. I have a video on making a very simple one.

@@ThriftyToolShed Ok, now that's a proper explanation, Thank you. Is there and way to modify this device so as to set it to the exact component you want to test? That would work? Is it as accurate out of circuit as any other lcr meter? The price on it is amazing, I'm definately going to get one of these. Is that curve tracer video on your channel, I will check it out. In reference to lcr meters in general which cost up on 400 euros, can they test capacitors in circuit with any accuracy? . If a capacitor in circuit has others in parallel to it then wouldn't it make a test worthless regardless of the price of the meter?

At this point there is several variants of the GM328 out there ranging from around $10 - 30 USD. I still use mine it works well for the money.
