Dr. Typewriter, at (8:20) what is the material that you installed as a sound dampener under the type cover, and what did you use to attach/glue the material to the metal?
@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp1212 жыл бұрын
That was a synthetic felt I got at a local hardware store, and glued in place with rubber cement.

Marvelous. I'd expected to see quality, given Olympia's name (and my own personal experience with the SM-9), but I didn't realize the extent of the features that they put into their standard machines. At this point in history, it seems like many other manufacturers were simply coasting along and not bothering to innovate or really stand out, except Olivetti in visual design. It's nice to see a look into what was behind Olympia's reputation. Thanks for this review.
@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp1213 жыл бұрын
Very true. If you look at major players such as Royal and Underwood, their quality was consistent but the design was essentially no different from their introductory models. The Royal FP stems from the #10, the Typemaster from the No.5 Underwood. That's 60 years of similarity.

So nice. I'm making a video about my "typewriter problems" i had last fall! Trying to no avail to find a typewriter repair person in Vancouver, ended up borrowing another typewriter temporarily at a cool stationery store in town, and "rehoming" Perséphone to a new home with someone who appreciates her for her style. Guess she's retired now.

thanks for posting a great video on a great machine. I have this exact machine and it’s in pretty much pristine condition, the only thing that I cannot get to work on it is the margin Clear and Set keys, neither will go down when pressed…….do you have any suggestions to get them to work again? Thank you.

There are pawls on the back that engage/disengage the tab stops and they could be misaligned or seized.

Beautiful. I had an Italic SG1 once and it also came with the dust-cover and the owners manual. I regrettably sold it.

That is so beautiful! I own a 1960 Hunter Green Olympia SM4. It’s like brand new. Purchased from a woman who’s mother didn’t need it anymore. Paid only $249.00. I love this machine. It is also beautiful to look at. I have been typing since I was 16. I am 72 and still enjoy typing. Learned in High School. I figured that was the best way to meet a lot of girls at one time. I was right. I was the only 16 year old among 30 sixteen -seventeen year old girls.😂😂😂

Wonderful find! And a very fair price for a very desirable machine. You pay it once but it's yours for life. I'm tremendously passionate about my typewriters. As far as meeting girls through it... Thanks very much!!

At about 7:21 you mentioned "powder-coated frames" unless I misunderstood. I'm pretty sure powder coating wasn't commonly used in 1960. Besides, it looks more like an enamel to me. I inspected factories for over three decades before I retired. I first saw powder coating in the mid to late 90s. This was in response to three hazards of typical flammable paint coatings - health (breathing the vapors during coating), emissions wrt air quality and fire hazard. Please pardon me for quibbling. This was an excellent and informative video. I'm tempted to obtain this model for myself now, but I'm fighting it because I have way too many machines! But I do from time to time need the "+" or "=" symbols that are more prevalent on German machines and typically lacking on American machines. I'm not sure why.

I have six of SG-1, got them one at a time in Craigslist over 5 years span. These machines are the best of the best, over engineered, super durable, great fingers response, take lot of space and very heavy, the only machine that equals to this SG-1 is SG-3, but of course, SG-1 looks a lot better, but as far as performance they are equally great, well, SG-3 just a tad better, it’s an SG-1 with new clothes and improved mechanical.I can type on it all day without fingers fatigue, all in all, great german’s engineering.
@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp1212 жыл бұрын
I'd concur that they are excellent machines. With a prominent amount of meat on the bones. Tremendously well engineered and really a fine Chablis in a rack full of vinegar.
