Fun fact, the square handguard in used in conjunction with an approximately 3m cord attached to the scabbard to jump over walls. The blade and the scabbard would be dug into the ground, these scabbards were often very sturdy and had capped pointed tips for this purpose in some cases. You would then step on the square portion to jump up whilst pulling the sword up with you by pulling on the cord. I hope this explanation does this technique justice.

7:45 the only problem with straightening a bent Japanese style blade is that once bent, it creates a weak point in the steel and after that it bends there very easily, again and again. Once upon a time, I owned a Ronin Elite Katana. It costed me $900 and is the sharpest katana I've ever cut with, and I've owned practically everything worth mentioning besides custom blades from renowned smiths and nihonto. However, after I botched up a chop on a wood brach (sadly, young and stupid...) the blade was ugly bent. I straightened it relatively easy, but every time I used to cut water bottles the blade was again bent from the impact. That didn't stop it from going through 12 Coca Cola bottles 2 l. in a row with a single horizontal swing. Still, I prefer my blades sprinly, be it Japanese or European. I know myself and that's why I never aimed to buy a nihonto only to see it get bent soon. But for $60 blade, who cares at all. It's for fun.

For a fantasy ninja sword I'd say this is perfect! It's stealthy, straight bladed, has a square guard & inexpensive. Most people might not think of inexpensive as good when it comes to swords but a fantasy ninja would need to have weapons that are disposable if need be and seen as tools not heirlooms. Sure there are more expensive ninja swords, like the Hanwei ones, but for the price & usability i feel it best fits what a fantasy ninja would need (even if it doesn't last forever)
@reillyford14127 жыл бұрын
Great review. But I just wanted to correct you, that blade shape did exist in Japan, but it was not an exclusive weapon of the Ninja class, it was used by the Ashigaru (light foot) as a backup weapon in battle.

Yup. It did existed. This was oftenly Ninja the weapon of choice (the more wealthy ones) cus Katana like we know it was for Samurai Only. 'Cuz it was symbol of status. Symbol of nobility. @EskChan196 жыл бұрын
No they weren't. At least not usually. There are a very few reported cases were someone was both a Ninja and a Samurai, but most Ninjas definitey were not. A ton of them were farmers. "Ninja" was just the Japanese term for Spy. You rarely had them sneaking trough a castle in the shadows, wearing all black or anything. Usually they were dressed as farmers, waited for the victim to pass while looking busy on the side of the road and then struck. And beeing a farmer certainly helped with blending in. The largest portion of Ninja were not Samurai though.
@eagle1626 жыл бұрын
okay time to debunk a few things, there is no such thing as a ninjato,ninja use regular swords like everybody else although there were straight katanas use by foot soldiers but only for a short period of time and not by Ninja Ninja is not a Japanese term for spy, they did spy work and Commando work,but it's not a term for Spy, the vast majority were Samurai most presidents don't got time for training or free time in general some were foot soldiers though, they had many disguises they would take on, Call well the seven disguises you can read this in the manual the shoninki
@EskChan196 жыл бұрын
So you're saying they used a sword that was slightly different from a katana and was straight. Exactly like... i dunno... a ninjato? Just because the sword existed before it was given a name doesn't mean it's wrong. Learn your facts. And fine yeah, if you want to be mister knowitall it does not literally translate to spy. But it doesn't change the fact that 90% of their tasks were exactly what people preceive as spies and "super-spies" ala James Bond or co. So if you want to translate it or not, it's still the same thing. Though no, the majority were not samurai. A few were, but not most of them and certainly not "The majority". So one misinformation and 2 senseless nitpickeries that boil down to the same thing, why did you even bother posting this? You certainly didn't "Debunk" anything,you just watsed my time and everyones time in the future who will read this. It's not like it had any actual use. If you have nothing to contribute just don't write please. Thanks.

Cant agree. If you cant afford to buy a sword (for actual use) that is at about $100 or more, then its most likely better to save your money until you CAN afford to buy one. Not saying that you have to run out and buy a $20k pure master sword as your first "japanese" sword, or even Japanese styled/influenced sword. But if you go up one or two notches you'll get a better representation of what a proper sword of this genera can actually do/look/feel like and you'd most likely be more satisfied with your purchase. If its just for shits and giggles then why the hell not. After all this is a "ninjato", IE bullshit hollywood shits-and-giggles-central.
@Crash323787 жыл бұрын
Skall, what you're referring to at 4:43 is the Shinogi, the blade ridge. The Shinogi Ji is the flat of the blade between the mune (back of the blade) and the Shinogi. Ha is the edge and the hamon is the temper line. That blade however does not have a hamon due to not being tempered correctly if at all. At 8:19 the dent in the Ha (edge) shows just how badly it was heat treated (or if was at all). That edge should have been differentially heat treated, but that would have curved the blade. The bend from the impact and the fact that you were able to bend it back so easily leads me to believe the steel might have actually been annealed (heat treatment used to soften the metal).Sometimes they anneal the metal to make grinding the edges or inlays, etc. easier on the tools. If it had any tempering done even 1045 would have a tendency to "flex" and retain its shape instead of bending so easily. Either really bad steel with no heat treating or cheap steel which was annealed. The blackening of the blade, much like bluing a gun barrel, may have been used to prevent rust if it's not stainless. Which at this point I doubt it is. I know you get what you pay for but I wouldn't give them 30 bucks for that blade. Thanks for the review though =) keep em coming.

A few things: 1. I got one of these for my 18th birthday. 2. In my opinion, it mostly sucks; the first thing to be disrupted is the wrapped handle, which makes it uncomfortable to handle. 3. The scabbard broke next, because it's mostly cheap plastic. 4. The weapon seems reasonably balanced; it's not overly heavy. It's lighter than my kendo shinai (though, based on interactions I had with other kendo students, my shinai might've been unusually heavy. That's a different topic.) 5. Ninja swords/"Ninjato" aren't historical. 6. The only way you'll "End them Rightly" with this sword is to throw the sword at them. It's a good "first sword", for screwing around, or for ornamentation. I wouldn't want to fight in the first place, but I'd really rather not fight with one of these.

That edge is known as an "apple seed" edge and is optimal for cutting organic tissue. The saya was traditionally used as the breathing tube, not some "oversized drinking straw"! Would be a nice blade for an emergency cache if nothing else. Priced right enough to get two. One sharp and one to dull to a "dime edge" for practice.

You are mostly right about it it being a real historical design; no one can track down where it originates: movies, plays, etc. Some of the crumb trails suggest the Japanese made it first in an attempt to be more relatable to the Western World by straightening their swords without loosing some of their signature style.

Allow me, anything .05-.12 is considered low carbon steel, .13 to .22 is considered medium carbon steel. And anything .30 and higher is high carbon steel. So 1045 Wich is .45% carbon is essentially high carbon at this point. 1045 is a good material. But if you can get the 1060 GET IT. Much more blade and edge retention, can be bent to a 90° angle and springs back with no damage. They can litterally be used to chop down a small tree with little to no damage to the blade.

Now I might be wrong, but if I remember correctly, I saw mentioning existence of such type of swords. I think on Shad or Antony Cummins channels, if I am not mistaken, similar swords existed in Japan, they were cheaper and much poorly made compare to katanas, and were consider swords of ordinary soldiers. Now there is absolutely zero mentioning of them being used by ninjas, but consider them being in big usage among soldiers, ninjas could use it when they need it, since lots of soldiers used it and it would not attract attention. Also I don't remember them having square tsubas.

This is a random request. I am a wood floor guy, for lack of a better definition. I use paint scrapers to get at corners and hard to reach places. I'm interested in the proper angle I should use for sharpening fine to more robust scraper blades with a bastard file. I've tried almost perpendicular as well as parallel strokes in many years in the industry. From what I see most guys use an angle approximating 45 degrees to sharpen their files. The idea is to get a substantial burr and not necessarily an ideal edge. Thank you, love your work.

just as a side not if you wanna strip the finish on something like this get it taked apart so you dont hurt the wrap or the handle scales and use a sponge brush to apply toilet bowl cleaner to the areas you wanna strip, make sure its the toilet bowl cleaner with acid as the main ingredient. it wont hurt the structure of the steel at all just as long as you dry it off and then just polish to your liking

A real sword fight is more like a gun fight. They happen fast and usually without multiple swings going on. So it doesn't really matter too much about the tensile strength of your sword. What matters is how fast it can be unscathed to attack.

A friend of mine once had a sword like that, back when the ninja craze was hitting the US. He took that thing on a hike while another friend and I took then military pattern machetes. The machetes handled scrub and fairly thick branches rather well. The other guy took that rattly "ninja-to" and struck a fairly thin sapling. It bounced off and rattled like a can with some coins in it. He tried a few more times but after that day we never saw the sword again, nor much of his other ninja stuff.

It's always been disputed on what kinds of swords shinobi actually used, if they even regularly used swords that often at all, what with their tonfa, kama, sai and the like. Some sources I've looked at hint that some shinobi might have used a smaller, cheaper variant of the typical nihonto as the kind used by samurai, like the kodachi, which at first glance would look to be a wakizashi (the shorter sword that samurai traditionally wore with a katana), but wakizashi were of a certain length, around 30 - 60 cm, whereas kodachi didn't have a regulated set length, being somewhere in between the lengths of a katana and wakizashi. Of course, since wakizashi were not limited to only just the samurai class like the katana, people of lower class were allowed to wield wakizashi, so shinobi might have also used those. However there were some samurai who were also shinobi, so a few might have used katana as well, though in retrospect using a sword near a meter in length would not have been as conducive for ninjutsu-style combat. Could someone explain to me what the point of the black finish is? I mean maybe I've just come to expect most, if not all, steel swords to be the usual steel grey, so is it just some redundant aesthetic choice?

Well now, this is a surprise. I didn't expect to see this sword on your channel. This was the very first full tang blade I ever bought. Still got it in fact. I have only two complaints about it, both of which are very minor and one probably being my own fault. One is the weapon is rather heavy. You said it was light, but it is much heavier than anything else I own. The other is I cannot safely hold the weapon in its sheath upside down, as it just dumps out like water in a tall cup. This may have been to poor maintenance on my part, because I think I can remember a time where it didn't do that.

I scrolled a couple hundred comments and I have input that nobody else seemed to give: Generally swords used by ninjas were cheap enough to be thrown away, but the square guard's original purpose was to be used as a high step to get over walls or onto rooftops. I doubt you still have this thing, but I was interested whether or not it would support the weight of an athlete. The sheaths of these swords also commonly had storage for magic trick stuff, and perhaps it adds strength for the whole Swiss army ninja sword scenario. Catch y'all nonjas later 🙏

The myth of the Movie Ninja Sword is that a Japanese movie was being made and not enough swords were available. Broomsticks were painted up for the extras as a replacement for Swords. People noticed they were straight vice the traditional curve in the West and thus the Ninja Sword was born. Hollywood ran with it from the late 60's on. Most likely spies/assassins/thieves/Yakuza would carry Wakizashi for better concealment and indoor fighting.
@CountOrlok226 жыл бұрын
As far as Musashi swords go, this is actually a surprise, because typically the blades arrive very sharp, but there are issues with the geometry. This seems to be precisely the opposite. My other issue with Musashi is the frequency with which you end up getting a cracked tsuka and loose tsuka-ito.
@SolutionsNotPrayers2 жыл бұрын
It's sharp and cuts. You're not digging concrete or stabbing metal doors, if it can kill then it serves it's function. You can get the same results from $9 made in Pakistan knife blades sold at gas station stores. Hell, a serrated plastic knife can kill.

I still like my spring steel blades more for cutting though.

I like the finish. It reminds me of one of my nice rifles. Since the finish appears to be bluing, you can use cold blue to touch up the edge after sharpening it.
@elindred7 жыл бұрын
when I buy an inexpensive pocket knife I expect to have to pay an extra cost in time, by having to give it an initial sharpening. I see this sword the same way. At $60 I could see this as a good project sword, for learning how to sharpen swords or rewrap handles, etc. You can experience and appreciate their construction up close for a low price.

Though the over all design is based upon a hollywood invention it is a design close to what may have been used. The idea was that Shinobi no mono would have flattened out a quick blade and put an edge on it. Basically a junk blade made in the field that you would toss when done. These are reminiscent of the old chokuto swords which where straight and single edged, which originated from China. Typically you hear the term "ninjato" however I more often hear the term shinobigatana among some groups such as the bujinkan. I'm not expert by any means, however I really like your videos and you mentioned something that I had run across in my studies. Great video as always keep up the good work.
