I had a similar question when I first began watching James. He enjoys styling his hair, makes occasional reference to it, but I think the age question goes beyond the grey hair. Looking at his 2007 Barista Championship video, I am tempted to ask, "Is he 12 or 30?" In any event, it furthers an image of a man of mystery and intrigue.

A friend who had the glass and metal IKEA press pot for a dozen years bequeathed it to me on her move to Seattle back in 2016. With me it lasted until last year when I inadvertantly tapped it with a spoon. Fifteen, sixteen years all tolled, and then a sad passing, but miraculous! For any IKEA product to last that long, even four years with me, is a miracle.

I have lots of IKEA products that have lasted me more than 12 years and are still going strong : all my furniture (including HEMNES stuff and bed, and leather couch, and nearly all the kitchen products (I don't buy the non stick cookware, that never lasts, no matter the brand), and I bought my glass french press 2 years ago, no issue whatsoever. It is also a sign that this guy is super biased against IKEA products. He clearly states that he hates these products almost right off the bat. For instance, when he says that the glass french press looks flimsy, it in fact is not (and does not). Several persons in the comments have commented that they have used theirs for years and it's going strong. I can attest to that, it does the job and it won't break unless you drop it on hard floor of course. But it's definitely not flimsy. At least, we know that the products he doesn't hate are actually very good quality.

@jigglybits
@jigglybits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, the reason you're having trouble with the metal pour-over 'funnel' is because you used a paper filter. If you had used the included metal filter, the ridges on the funnel lifts it slightly away from the sides, allowing water to drain better. When you use paper, it sticks to the side too much and forcing the liquid to drain only through the small hole at the bottom.

I used to own a Bodum Chambord French press, that is until my wife started making tea in it. She didn’t warm the glass before adding the boiling water and shattered it. I picked up a French press at IKEA as a temporary replacement and I actually like it. It’s not the best, but it does produce a decent coffee. A little more grounds make it through the filter and I don’t especially care for the plastic, but it served its purpose quite well until I found a more decent replacement. One thing I do like about the moka pot is that it's stainless steel and not aluminium. You are not supposed to drink acidic liquids like coffee from an aluminium container. It’s not too terrible, it’s only ever been one single grain, and I’m sure if I call IKEA I can get a new mesh filter from their absolutely excellent customer service.

IKEA's ground organic coffee and espresso are okay enough -- we find the flavour on the mild side. Can't beat their price point for organic products though... big fan of their Lingonberry jam, for example. Have the IKEA French press (black plastic with glass) and the fully metal pour-over. The French press is still going strong years later (with no chips or signs of failure) -- the pour-over is new to us and great for single cups. (And yes, the metal bits are designed to come apart for ease of washing individual components.) We have a high quality Italian stovetop espresso doodad for guests who are more serious about their morning coffee experience... that said, most are perfectly fine with the other methods.

A stainless Moka pot for that price? Sweet! Compare that to a Contessa, Carmencita, or Alessi 9090. Only what's nice about the 9090 is that it latches closed instead of screwing so you don't need a towel to hold the base if you pre-heat your water separately like he does.

Ikea's French presses work well. I've owned 2 large ones and one of the small ones; that number would be lower, but I am clumsy and broke 2. I also currently own the cone Vietnamese-style drip thing. It also works well. I always use the metal filter.

I have had that black french press for 3 years now, and I love it for travel or when I was living in a dorm and only had one kettle.

It's so frustrating that the only thing James actually liked seems to be the only product IKEA have discontinued.

That's why they discontinued it: it worked.

Judging from other comments, it was really sturdy. So if someone bought it, they wouldn't need another again for years. Which means that after a while, sales of it will slow down and IKEA won't make as much of a profit on it as on other less sturdy products. So yeah, they discontinued it because it works and that's less profitable in the long run. :/

@@MissPoplarLeaf - not really. That cheap stuff won’t get manufactured to be produced for ages (it's not supposed to become a "classic" like a BODUM French press). It simply should lure you into the shop (and if not buying a full blown kitchen, take whatever other stuff to make you a happy & "successful" trophy hunter). OTOH, I've got really frustrated after I've found out that IKEA has discontinued "my" vanity basin only 30 years after I've bought its predecessor! 🤣 (so I drove 200km to get it from someone who had it stored for that period of time). Otherwise I would have had to reshuffle my whole (micro) bathroom interior.

I've been using the moka pot for several years - they work fine but make a proper mess if you overfill by even a few ml! :D I think the weird shape was an effort to be more ergonomic by making it so that fingers can wrap around the base for easier opening, which is good for people with smaller hands. That said, my top tip is to use a grippy washing up glove to grip a moka when opening - much easier!

Sadly here in USA the moka pot is not offered anymore due to recall. People here are rather slow...must be the fluoridated water. Thank goodness we have a deep well pump!

After this review 2 years ago i bought the cheap glass French press. Surprisingly it’s lasted, no warping or bending of the plastic or metal…been using it every day! Good buy in my opinion

My four year old son is obsessed with Toy Story 4, and thinks the word "trash" is hilarious. He was playing while I watched your video, heard you say the word "trash" 3 times in a row and complely lost it. It was the funniest thing he ever heard. So if this whole KZbin coffee reviewer thing doesn't work out, you've definitely got a career as a comedian for children 😂

I bought the funnel as an impulse buy on one visit. As I had no desire to make coffee with it, I use the pour over funnel to filter my chip oil, works awesome.
