When I was young I used to watch Bernstein s Young People s concerts on PBS TV broadcast from Carnegie Hall. Bernstein was an excellent Educator as well as Conductor and Composer. A true genius

Hey, I suppose you talk about me at the end of the video!!! Thanks for mention 😉 But especially thanks YOU for your channel, for giving us our daily dose (more often than not, several doses) of music, knowledge and fun. Sure, you get us folks keeping on listening.

I just bought this set a month or two ago, and have been listening. One of my favorite sets. It pleases me that this channel gives Bernstein his due. I once had a Grammophone magazine subscription, and I remember a lot of British critics sniffing at Bernstein and dismissing him.

Just like her Barber series, Marin Alsop really shines with American repertoire. But, her Brahms with LPO is also superb.

The recordings are fantastic, indeed. The more it‘s a pity that they they include neither „Songfest“ nor „Halil“. „Songfest“ is in my opinion the most original work Bernstein wrote - kind of a hidden opera about modern relationships. And „Halil“ is one of these concertos too short to make it’s way on a program. But fact is that the only excuse not to have this Box is to have all on single CDs.

I liked his discussion of the symphonies of Charles Ives.

Wonderful Town is the one musical he said he did for the money. Even so it's a great score.

Rich Farmer: If Bernstein wrote WONDERFUL TOWN for the ‘money’, he should have kept that perspective on all his compositions because WONDERFUL TOWN is great and he has nothing to be embarrassed about. And a Tony winner for Best Musical and an opportunity to gloriously reunite with Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Bernstein once wrote an essay called “Why Don’t You Run Upstairs and Write a Nice Gershwin Tune?” It was printed in the "Joy of Music" collection. You have likely read it, but if not, I think you would very much like it.

Bernstein fervently wanted to be George Gershwin, but he was a lousy Gershwin conductor, & he didn't understand his eminent precursor. As scholarship of the past 30 years has shown, "Rhapsody in Blue" is not a mere stringing-together of great tunes, as Bernstein maintains in that essay. It is clearly a composition, with legitimate development. As a composer, Bernstein never reached the heights of "Porgy & Bess", much less "Concerto in F" or "2nd Rhapsody". But he was a good composer, & I do enjoy much of his music.

I think West Side Story reaches the level of Porgy and Bess.
