Thank you for making this video! I loved that you pointed the camera out the window for the entire trip and that you captured the sounds of the train -- without any imposing narration. You are right about the route having its charm. I really enjoyed it!

I just took this train (59) on 8-5-2024 with my girlfriend, what a great experience. I woke up more than I thought I would while sleeping but no complaints. I brought my scanner so I could monitor the engineer and other rail operations. I woke up early and grabbed coffee and just sat in the observation car for the sunrise. It is a very unique experience that is hard to explain.

Great idea with the scanner. Is there a budget scanner you recommend for similar listening on trains around the US and for signals in a big city. I am in Chicago. Thanks!
@robertlane66752 ай бұрын
@@CuriousUserError The Uniden BC75xlt is what I use. It runs about $100. It won't do digital though. The BCD160 will do NXDN and DMR but is more than double the price. The 75 also has a close capture feature allowing you to find nearby frequencies automatically. Most trains are still analog so I would go with the 75 for now I guess.

First time viewer of your channel. Very humorous watching you trying to unwrap your breakfast sandwich with one hand, while trying to hold the camera with your other hand! Also, it sounded like you were enjoying that burger and chips immensely when you were pulling out of Jackson - Your microphone picked up every bit of it! 🤣 I’ll have to check out some of your aviation videos. I already subscribe to Josh Cahill and Noel Phillips channels (Noel has done numerous train videos as well). I am a much bigger rail fan than I am an aviation fan, so I say MAKE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!! 😎

Watching while listening to Arlo Guthries "City of New Orleans"

Steve Goodman wrote and recorded "City of New Orleans" in 1971. ;) Who said " just the fax maam " ?
@anthonyc18833 ай бұрын
@@what_321 Yes, good catch on Goodman although his original (like almost all of his music) seems just a bit too bright and bouncy. That tune seems like it should have a bit more of a "sadder" delivery, IMO. Not like a dirge or anything depressing, but not quite as happy sounding. Arlo Guthrie's version goes a little bit in that direction and I prefer it. Also, "just the fax, ma'am" or the "facts"? I'm certain the latter is the way to say/write that classic old saying. Cheers!

When I was a little boy my dad and mom took me from Chicago to New Orleans on the original City of New Orleans. My dim memory of the trip was that it was considerably classier. Interesting to watch this video of the Amtrak version. Seems like you should have led into the video with the Arlo Guthrie song about the Illinois Central version. Thanks for posting this video.

Amtrak is in the process of refurbishing the entire long distance overnight Superliner fleet. Unfortunately to do so Amtrak had to pull cars out of service. While not so noticeable with coaches and sleepers, it has been a problem with Diners and Sightseeing Lounges. The Texas Eagle and Capitol Limited have gone without a Sightseeing Lounge whereas the City of New Orleans has gone without a Diner or Cross Country Cafe (refurbished Superliner I Diners). Amtrak chose to pull from the eastern train routes instead of the more scenic western train routes. The good news is Amtrak is expected to finish the refurbishment program by the end of 2024 and the pulled cars will return to service... More good news is Amtrak has received funding to replace the entire long distance Superliner fleet, with the order forthcoming soon by the end of 2024. However, don't expect any of the new bi-level sleeper fleet to enter into service before 2030 to 2035. The new sleepers will introduce a single bed sleeper in the similar manner as an airline first class seat in a smaller room, but not as small as a Japanese or European pod as well as continuing the standard bedroom and roomettes, just not as many roomettes...

I took a circle tour of the country in coach and was comfortable enough even at 67. In 2023 I took the Southwest Chief out to LA and the California Zephyr back from Frisco both in sleeper and it was nice. But in April of this year I went by coach from Syracuse to New York to New Orleans to Los Angeles to Seattle to Chicago and home all in coach on Amtrak and it was almost as good, the seats are roomy with lots of leg room and lean back so you can sleep in them. If my arthritic old bones can anybody can. The only thing I missed was the dining car food, cafe food is mostly passable but below even McD standards. For a 19 hour trip I would save my money for a good restaurant meal at the destination.

The Sightseer Lounge car that offers amazing views of the passing scenery on the City of New Orleans doesn’t exist on the Texas Eagle from Chicago to San Antonio! It makes NO sense!!! the Eagle has higher ridership, higher revenue and is a much longer journey than the City making it a more feasible route than the City to feature such an amenity!!
@chrisdobrowolski27833 ай бұрын
They do it on purpose since the sunset Limted connects to the Texas Eagle going to LA and it has both an observation car and a dinning car and they do not want to have 2 observation cars and 2 dinning cars. Thus will only happen if they change the route of Texas Eagle or when they connect make it longer space like 6 hours so they can remove some cars and then add the Sunset Limted to the Texas Eagle going to La.
@johnsons74thsquadron743 ай бұрын
@@chrisdobrowolski2783If that were true then explain why only two cars from the Texas Eagle continue past San Antonio on the Sunset Limited and the rest of the consist remains in San Antonio. Explain why the Texas Eagle did use to run with both a lounge and diner pre-Covid and yet you never see the Sunset running with two dining cars and two lounges!

They're fixing them up, but there's not that many left. This is more what happens when the last time Congress let you buy long distance bilevel rolling stock was the 90s. Fortunately there's a request for proposals to replace the old trains, but that probably won't get done until 2030...
@johnsons74thsquadron743 ай бұрын
@@mitthrawnuruodo9 I’ve been reading chatter that beginning in November, the Capitol Limited and Silver Star will be combined into a single Chicago to Miami train! This will mean the end of Superliners on the Capitol and the Star running north of DC. If that’s true, then the food service cars on the Capitol can be assigned to the City to reinstate dining service!
@ronclark9724Ай бұрын
Unfortunately Amtrak is in the process of refurbishing the entire long distance Superliner fleet, long overdue. To do so Amtrak had to pull cars from service to refurbish them. While that wasn't much of a problem with coaches and sleepers, it was with the diners and sightseeing lounges as Amtrak doesn't have a lot of spares of those cars, one per train set not two or three cars per train set. The good news is the refurbishment program is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Soon those pulled cars should return to service. I know train advocates have numerous routes they want Amtrak to bring back, but Amtrak only has so many train sets, and very few extra cars to cover for maintenance. Simply put Amtrak does not expand because they don't have the train sets or cars to do so...
