Kevin, you have surpassed yourself 👍👊 This is an epic review. You bring such a fine palate to the table and couple it with accessible descriptions and explanations - outstanding! Interestingly, the origins of Carter Hall are a little vague. R. J. Reynolds introduced the blend in August 1956 and later sold the blend to John Middleton who re-introduced the blend in 1987. While some suggest that it has been around since 1895, there is no information on production of the blend before the R.J. Reynolds introduction. The characteristics that you described so well, certainly made it the mainstay of the late Golden Age of pipe smoking. It was and still is a low maintenance, everyday, all-day tobacco - perhaps the quintessential user friendly tobacco whether you are a novice or an seasoned veteran. I wonder how many new pipe smokers would have had a much different (and much pleasanter) first experience if their tobacco had been Carter Hall? You are right. It would and does make a great blend for breaking in a new pipe. It's popular in the YTPC for that purpose. Your side-by-side recommendation is excellent. We identify differences with greater precision than similarities. Just listened to your interview this afternoon. Brilliant, my friend. 😎 Your remark about skipping a pipe on days that are too hot and too cold sounded so familiar. I've been on a short pipe smoking hiatus. It's been hot and humid - trying to smoke a pipe would be like trying to light and smoke damp cardboard 😂 Sadly, no garage to escape into. I hope that your week is off to a good start. Be well and stay awesome - peace

Hey Kevin, I just stumbled across this video. This is much more than just the Carter Hall Pipe Tobacco review. I think you really addressed an important but often overlooked topic---tasting and resetting the palate. Whenever I smolder to compare and tease out different tobacco notes from a melange, I always prepare myself a very mild version of coffee with a minimal amount of sugar in it. As you alluded to in this video, I would try two pipes with a similar melange simultaneously/alternate between the two and sip my beverage in between. For example, I would have a mixture of virginia and perique vs. virginia, perique, and oriental leaf mix. Guess what I`m looking for in the later one...haha. It really works, and I`m so surprised that I don`t hear more talk about this "technique". I`d be super excited if you went into this topic a bit deeper in some future video.... eh, just a thought 😉 Keep up the good efforts!

Thanks for the review. I got a small 1.5oz bag of this (pre-Dominican manufacture) it's somewhat dry, burns well and tastes has light cocoa notes and tobacco. It is fairly mild, and I have been using this for a mixer to aid in other tobaccos burning better, and it is great for that and seems to shine. By itself it's just fairly unexciting, but I haven't tried a fresh tub (which is all they make now it seems). Maybe the newer one is different somehow. So far I prefer SWR.

Interesting I am looking into Carter Hall since I was told it would be a good starter blend. Does it benefit at all from aging or does that make the subtle flavors even harder to taste?

Carter Hall was one of my first tobaccos, and quickly became one of my favorites. A great, mild, everyday kind of smoke. It's also a good blender for other tobaccos, especially aromatics, because as you said, it's unobtrusive. If I had only one complaint, it's that I can't retro-hale with it; it burns my nose lol. Still, it's pretty great.

Carter Hall is one of my faves. Have you made a video on Sir Walter Raleigh yet? I love that blend and I'm not sure why. If I'm in a hurry and puff fast, it taste like nothing but if I smoke it slow and get a good cadence going, it taste amazing.

Another good tobacco to “side by side” carter hall with is Sutliff Estate Pipe Tobacco. I bought some of it when I couldn’t get my hands on carter hall. I heard some people say the suliff is better, but I think they’re different enough to be their own separate things. The Sutliff stuff definitely has more “flavor”. I like them both though!
