Hi dave! i know you might not be able to answer this in time, but i have to make a decision on whether to buy this telescope or not before midnight because its on clearance. Would you recommend it as a beginner telescope? i really like it and what ive heard of it
@simonhardwick11684 жыл бұрын
I own one of these . It's okay for getting into astronomy or for one of those presents for the kids where no one knows any better and after a few viewings it will be put at the back of a closet somewhere and forgotten. Tripod stand is flimsy, joints become loose after a few times use and become wobbly, mirror is spherical and not parabolic so viewing more distant planets than the moon appears blurry and not crisp. It can be improved a little through collimation but still not perfect. I have had mine less than a year and already looking to upgrade. Save the pennies and get something else and do better research than I did. Thank me later.

@@antagonistalion sorry did not see your reply. I went for a skywatcher skyliner 200p flextube on a Dobson goto mount. It can be purchased without goto as well and for a little more than the celestron is far superior.

@simonhardwick1168 Жыл бұрын
@@kimberlyallan1671 hi . Yes I did upgrade. For beginners and ease of use a Dobsonian telescope is highly recommended. The size is up to your budget. I purchased a skywatcher 250p flex tube in the end and also a 2x Barlow and 6mm and 9mm goldline eyepiece for planetary viewing. The 250p is a 10" scope so quite large so very recently I bought a skywatcher heritage 150p virtuoso (goto) flex tube which is highly portable and also offers excellent views of planets and nebula. The 150p heritage is also available on a non goto mount which makes it very affordable. The 150p is a 6" so still offers excellent views.

This can be bought with an electronic tracker. I own this scope with electronic tracker. If the review portion is about the assembly process, I'd say the assembler, failed to watch the cd, the online tutorials and to figure out the metal triangle is a screw driver. You will need it to assemble and for general adjustments while in use. You dont need to buy one. The center of the tripod table is for setting lenses and tools for easy access. Though not a high end scope, it is good and purchase of additional lenses and filters , makes it quite flexible. With all the new telescopes which use digital cameras, these become introductory options for new stargazers. Ive had mine for several years. Still enjoy sticking my face to the eye piece. Looking forward to mid october and the comet

I've had a fascination with the universe ever since I was in the 3rd grade when I was given a book on the planets. I bought a Celestron C4.5 on my 13th birthday back in 1989 for $600 which I saved up for years. With it I was able to see the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the craters of the moon. I've used it throughout the years and just last night viewed the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. I am now saving again as it is my dream to own a telescope like this!
@k.h.15874 жыл бұрын
The telescope you have is worlds better than the astromaster 130. You have a Japanese made vixen scope and mount. And the jump from 114 to 130 isn't much. If you want to upgrade get at least a 6"
@Chrisaaad3 жыл бұрын
@@k.h.1587 thanks for that info!... had no idea it was Japanese made and very surprising it would be better than the 130.
@k.h.15873 жыл бұрын
@@Chrisaaad 130mm is definitely more aperture than 114, but not really the best upgrade path from a 114. Generally 2 size jumps or more are recomended. If your scope says made in Japan with a v in a circle, and the mount has wood legs, then it is what I am talking about. If it actually cost as much as you said it did it probably is. As far as the astromaster goes, when they first came out they were using synta (Chinese supplier and now owners of celestron) 130mm f5 parabolic optics which are pretty decent. Same as Orion spaceprobe 130ST and celestron nexstar 130GT and 130SLT, and even the higher priced vixen r130SF which was not actually made by vixen like your celestron likely was (circle V is vixens Japanese trademark), Synta makes telescopes for many brands even Meade and most of Orions line, which in the same era as your scope, they were vixen as well. Someone told me that more recent astromasters now use spherical mirrors would be horrible at f5, though they do work in the long f8 114 s. But this person thinks he knows ALOT more than he actually does so I have not confirmed that to actually be the case. Now if your 114 has a short tube and a little lens built into the focuser tube, then that is a different animal and any parabolic 130f5 would blow it out of the water. I am pretty sure the c4.5 came on a vixen Polaris mount which is much more stable than an astromaster eq2 which is a whole size smaller and much less quality than a vixen Polaris, which is actually more like the omni CG4 mount but with wood legs. The super Polaris is cg5 size with the later great Polaris version being what the cg5 mounts are a Chinese copy of. You might even just consider getting a 6" tube and mount it to your existing mount. For $199 you can get a GSO 6" f5 or f6 that comes with rings, dovetail and finder scope, and usually an extension tube for visual use. It also has a 2" focuser. Opt has them branded as TPO and other dealers sell them under different names as well. If you have the mount I am thinking of, it would be the equivalent of having an omni 150xlt setup if you went with the f5 version. The f6 is a little easier to deal with optically, less critical in collimation and easier on eyepiece edge performance as well, but the longer tube is a little less stable on smaller mounts. At the most you will need to get new bolts at the hardware store if the threading is incompatible between your mount and the GSO rings, but if memory serves, GSO uses the same 6mm that yours probably uses rather than the 1/4-20 that synta uses. I always had to go to the hardware store whenever I got a GSO tube for that reason. You may need additional counterweight as well. And your mount should be compatible with Orion astroview/skyview pro weights. The dovetail that comes with the tube you won't need but will want to hold onto in case you get another mount, or decide to add a dovetail saddle to yours.

This is where they kept the price down. Getting a couple High quality eye pieces will Greatly increase the optical quality. One of the Celestron X-Cel LX Series Eyepieces in a - 1.25-Inch eyepiece will greatly enhance this scope. They are about $100.00 each.

You're better off without the EQ mount on these low price scopes, because they're usually shaky, imprecise and generally low quality(a minimally adequate EQ mount for this scope, is going to be around $500). This scope doesn't achieve high enough usable magnification to need tracking for visual observation, so Id go with something like the AWB OneSky, which is the same optical elements in a different package. Something like that, can be carried in one hand and setup in a couple minutes. A friend's son got one of these for Christmas and its a pain to keep the EQ mount working correctly and one of the setting circles is off by several degrees, so it cant be used to find anything.

Id get an AWB OneSky. Same optical train, in a very portable and convenient package, for the same price. Technically, this is portable, but taking it apart makes setup a lot more work and eats up a lot of your observation time. Edit: to clarify, the telescope itself is fairly good, but the mount is not. These type of mounts are very expensive for a good one. For a telescope this size and weight, an adequately solid and precise German equatorial mount, is going to be around $500+. Therefore they skimp a lot on the mounts for these low price scopes. I prefer a 'dobsonian' type mount for visual observation. A tracking mount like this one really isnt necessary unless your doing astrophotography, or high magnification, where the object will move out of view quickly. The OneSky uses the same mirrors and eyepieces(made by Celestron) but uses a high quality tabletop dobsonian mount. If you're interested, you can find much better reviews on some astronomy channels.

@reviewsbydave84174 жыл бұрын
Great Question - the main difference is the mount the 130 has an Equatorial Mount whereas the 100 az has an Altazimuth mount. With an equatorial, you can follow a celestial object as it moves through the sky by moving the telescope in only one direction -- right ascension. With an altazimuth, you move the scope in an east-to-west direction (azimuth) and slightly up-or-down (altitude). This isn't a big deal when observing an object that's low in the sky, but it becomes more of an inconvenience as you head up toward the zenith. If you are star gazing I'd still go with the 130 EQ

Not used StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ. however both pretty good, if you can get the 130 Eq you will have a bigger Newtonian Reflector which allows from more light, better visibility and more options to add stronger lenses with less distortion. The 130 EQ is large though so less portable.

Hi Antony, Barlow lenses are clever and convenient however quality is key here and with quality comes cost. I'd say don't go too high with magnification as 3x is really around the limit of this telescope size, also ensure the Barlow has good reviews and is a high quality one otherwise it will be difficult to focus well.

Razi.....the 2 eyepieces which came with the telescope should focus when you use the focus knob where the eyepiece is! if you use a 2x or 3x barlow lens or the star diaganal it may not focus due to focal length of the telescope. If that is the case then you will need a focus extender tube 'profile adapter' which fits in the eyepiece slot 🔭

Yes. They sell for about $60. They aren't good enough for distant object astrophotography, or for image stacking, but to get snap shots and video of the planets, they work fine.

Hey I just got this telescope today! But I can’t see anything through the eyepiece, its completely black, I have opened the lid in the front so that is not the prblm, can you suggest what might be the problem? Help plz!
@reviewsbydave84173 жыл бұрын
Hi I have a couple of ideas, have you set up the star finder? (if not I have a video that shows you how to) unless you do that you will struggle. How about if you point the telescope at a bright window ,do you see any change of brightness in the eyepiece? Try both eye pieces too, also it takes practice to get your eye correctly over the eyepiece, 1st job is to set up the star pointer though on a distance object in the day time (a terrestrial object like a road sign.) If its dark now and you've not set up your star finder(pointer) then you will rea;lly struggle as its guess work without it calibrated.
@sresthaagarwala82523 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks, after reading this I checked all but it still isn’t working, do you think that the it is due to collimation? And its a tough task, there’s too much confusion on KZbin about it!
@Jgawalters723 жыл бұрын
@@sresthaagarwala8252 Collimation isn't as difficult as you think. I got a laser collimator and made it a snap. You'll line up the laser to the center mark on the primary mirror (big mirror at the back) using the secondary mirror (little mirror at the front). Next you'll adjust the primary mirror to make sure the laser loops back into the laser collimator. I did that with my 8" Newtonian a few weeks ago. Took about 15 minutes. Hope that helps.

@hanyhj3 жыл бұрын
@@truckfityourgirl The scope should be aligned towards north, but I think the purpose of than is to use the equatorial mount to TRACK celestial objects, NOT to get the moon in the eyepiece. I suspect the problem has something to do with either COLLIMATION (aligning mirrors or lenses), or adjusting/aligning the finder scope. I have no idea how to do either of them.

Could be a few things Perhaps the lense needs adjusting in the housing, also focus wheel for the lense, other that that it could be that you recieved your telescope with your rear mirror out of alignment. That is explained in the instructions, I've not managed to do a video on that yet,

I’m thinking about getting one.. it looks really good. Would you recommend this as a first purchase? I have a natural interest in astronomy and love stargazing. Interested to know if it’s powerful enough to see nebulas, constellations and other planets in our solar system such as Jupiter / saturn / mars etc. Thanks:)
@mahir_m013 жыл бұрын
yes , its a great beginner telescope, you can see the planets and their details upto saturn, u can see beyond that but dont expect it to be as great of a view as other planets. As far as DSOs (deep sky objects) are considered , you can see most of the messier catalogs , yes you can see most of the bright nebulae but they will appear black and white, maby some amount of colour if ur under dark skies. Same goes for galaxies. You can see many star clusters and other stuff. You can get really hooked to it . 130mm aperture is great for a beginner. Consider buying it...it will future proof you for a long time. Clear Skies : )

@@mahir_m01 that’s not a problem! I managed to fix this in the end, was just getting my head round all the functions and then the thread screws. Besides that it is a fantastic scope. I’m considering getting a Barlow lens for more detailed images. Is there a particular Barlow lens which you recommend I get? (Would this allow me to see rings of Saturn etc or can I already do this with the 10mm?) Thank you in advance and for your time,
@masterwoo43593 жыл бұрын
@@ARCASIAUK i do not recommend you to get a Barlow lens for this telescope, as a person who used this telescope, the focal length is rather long for its aperture and design, and a barlow lens wouldn't allow you to see more detail. Furthermore, i wouldn't recommend you to use this scope for imaging, as this scope is difficult to polar align, due to its lack of a polar scope, and the mount itself isn't great for its weight, even for visual use(a rated 3 mount is kinda too small may be a rated 4 telescope would be enough). note that the declination slo-mo knob isnt a worm gear, so there is a limit to how much you can turn it. Then it will stop turning and you need to turn it in the other direction. colimination is important for the scope as it is a reflector. and note that this scope has a spherical mirror and not a parabolic one, it isn't a big problem at this aperture, but there will be some spherical aberration, and immediately at even sightly larger apertures such as 150mm, you need a parabolic one to function well. The scope, under good atmospherical turbulence(little), can clearly see the rings of Saturn and Jupiter. Mars's polar caps are also visible slightly. Be careful about focus, as it can move rather easily. lastly, i would say, the best focal length for the eyepiece would probably be around a 6 or 7-millimeter eyepiece, I would recommend a Celestron Omni or X-cel eyepiece because the included ones are bad.
