Great review and killer amp. One thing worth noting about the design inspiration, since it’s a little deeper than mentioned. Joe was using a lot of Z’s on the road but most recently the Maz 8, a single ended amp (joe, like a lot of dudes used single ended champs in the studio for grind). Joe wanted a single ended amp that could have more headroom and versatility so the Doc made a parallel single ended amp, thus in 7 watt mode you essentially have a classic single ended design and since the power amp is set up in parallel you get tons of harmonic clarity. Really clever, can’t wait to get one!

I bought my first single ended amp (Fuchs lucky 7) and it's bloody killer. Single el34

I tried this amp at my local shop with an open mind in an attempt not to be overly impressed by the high price and “boutique” label. But it blew me away. It had a beautiful clean sound that I rarely can find, and plenty of headroom for such a small package.

Bought it!

Yeah it's pretty wicked hey . I'm using a single ended amp (El34) and you your sounding good when your neighbours come to check it out.

@@ampgent what's the overdrive sound like on it , obviously the cleans are impeccable no denying that
@ampgent5 жыл бұрын
rossco robert it doesn’t have an overdrive channel, but the boost can take it over the top with some nice tube distortion. I’ll have to get back to you on the exact quality of it because for most applications I’m playing at lower volume and using pedals.

You did an Amazing job of interviewing Robin Trower , he is my Favourite. Try to interview Yngwie Malmsteen . Eric Clapton and ask Eric if he would play with Trower or Malmsteen ???? So Cool a Super Blues Concert to raise money for Cancer Research !!!! You Are The Best . Cheers 🥂

Dude is woke and from Montana! Keep giving me the good stuff. I have the fever also, just finished soldering in for the 1st time Lollar Jazzmaster pups in my Am Pro . Need to pull the neck bass side in a little but it is way 3D. John maybe do a Fender Custom Champ review, I know your busy but that would be cool from your room. Love the band equipment reviews.

Im debating whether to get the Z plus or the Maz 18......which one is better???
@milliesdad83226 жыл бұрын
Having the same dilemma. The Maz 18 seems slightly more versatile. Although, the Z plus excels in clean and upper mid American distortion. The reverb units on both are just ridiculous!
@voxpathfinder15r5 жыл бұрын
Z plus is a single ended class A design with a twist of two 6v6 tubes in parallel, so I guess it’s really a “dual” single ended. The maz 18 is class A/B so the transformer naturally cuts out even order harmonics, and as such has a Vox long tailed phase inverter circuit, the maz 18 also has a cathode follower circuit powering the fender tone stack. I don’t know if the Z plus has a cathode follower circuit, which does impart it’s own kind of punch. Really 2 different amps. I think class A amps are more forgiving with your playing in general and can get filthier. But class a/b amps have been iconic like Marshall’s.

@milliesdad83226 жыл бұрын
The best way I can describe the difference in Dr. Z Amps and other boutique manufacturers is that they tend to have a certain natural compression that I haven't found in other amps. You either care for it or you don't. The variability between many of his amps are subtle.

@ampgent6 жыл бұрын
Phishboy26 hey just wondering why you would say that? I play a Telecaster most of the time, but Les Paul once in a while. Some other guy commented that he thinks the circuit might suit a Les Paul better. I just don’t know much about amps.
@Phishboy266 жыл бұрын
My taste in any amp is to have enough low mids to have a great full tone no matter what i play. A speaker change to tame those upper frequencies would help this amp have body.
@ampgent6 жыл бұрын
Ok I see what you mean
@ampgent6 жыл бұрын
Just curious what speaker you might consider for an amp like this?
@Phishboy266 жыл бұрын
If i owned this amp i would upgrade the speaker to a WGS British lead. It is basically a Celestion Classic Lead 80, but more articulate and less chirpy.
