That 1959 version of Beethoven's violin concerto with Jochum was only produced in mono. A stereo version was planned, and a stereo cover produced, but it never materialised, instead he recorded it again with Jochum in 1962, which seems very strange. Maybe he didn't like the 1959 version, who knows? Anyway, nobody I've heard, including his other versions, can match Schneiderhan's slow movement of the Beethoven violin concerto with Paul van Kempen. Every music lover should hear this.

Those Beethoven sonatas with Kempff are still my favorite version, even though they're oozing gemutlichkeit all the time and I'm a fan of other approaches nearer to the period-instrument movement. There's just such a sense of sincerity, spontaneity and care, all the time, always with beautiful sounds, from such great all-round musicians!

Another virtuoso I never heard of! They are all over the place. And 34 discs! Amazing.

I stopped here as I discovered as a HS student a wonderful wartime live concert recording of the Beethoven concerto with Furtwaengler (with a sizzling final movement) , not in this set or currently available it seems. I later bought his Mozart , Beethoven, and Bach concerto recordings, all rewarding. But his tastes, his affinities, I think of as quite limited rather than very catholic, limited to German/Austrian music and a bit of the moderns. No Tchaikovsky in a 34 CD set? Sibelius? So many Beethovens? But excellent musicianship in this German sphere in the CDs I have and good that more people will know of him. Schneiderhan, like Kreisler, was born in Vienna, prodigious source of great string players.

He was a truly wonderful violinist and more than fully deserving of the care DG seems to have lavished on this project. Hats off for what looks like a superb job. (Unfortunately a bit too pricey for me 😢)
