I was using a nest learning thermostat for a couple of years before I switched to this one for my review. Nest is also pretty good, but I’ve been so happy with ecobee. I’m going to keep it on the wall.

The only issue I had with the security system is the motion sensors. So if you wanna set your alarm to arm when your away at work the sensors look for movement in case someone breaks a window or maybe you don’t have a sensor on all your windows and doors. But if you have pets, they can trigger the motion sensors & if you don’t respond to the alert on your phone you will have cops at your door. Ecobee says that if you place the sensors at a certain height pets won’t be a problem with this but that was not my experience. Just something to be aware of.

Quick question: is a subscription REQUIRED in order for the thermostat to operate at all? Great review.

The thermostat does not require a subscription for basic operation. If you want to wrap it into the whole home monitoring and security system then you would need the subscription.

I "had" a Nest 3rd gen. and completed an installation for a Carrier heat pump and blower unit. Come to find out with the installation team and supervisor, the Nest thermostat had difficulties with the Y1 communication to the heat pump so the company provided me a loaner with the Carrier branded EcoBee Premium until we figure out a solution. I may just end up with an Ecobee, but I wished they had equivalents of Nest Protects. I guess my ecosystem will be split between the two apps which thankfully nest protects don't require anything special.

I just noticed mine was saying poor carbon dioxide high and Voc high . I called the gas company and they said no gas leaks or carbon monoxide. Now this has scared me. Does this thermostat only read a few feet’s of the air around it near it ? My house is 1600 sq. Or does it read the whole house . When I open the front door and back door and air out that hall n the living room the air quality goes back to fair. I don’t have anyhthing else gas in home or weird chemicals not sure what to do

It's not going to be able to read the whole house, but as air drifts through your space things may change. I would try opening up a bunch of windows and running your fans for a little bit. Did you get new furniture, carpets, or any renovations recently? That can contribute to VOCs in the house.

Installing the Ecobee in the wall it's very easy; but no one talks about the "Power Extender Kit" on how to install it. That's needs to be done by an expert.
