Today I build this project, first I designed a new pcb and started to add the components then I still missing a few capacitors which I received today and could test today. I must say that it preduces a lot of background noise. Some of the example codes was bad but some are very good however the heavy background noise is disturbing. Tomorrow I will starting to make an investigation how to solve the problem because I believe it need some modifications.

That's actually an OLED screen rather than an LCD. They're a lot nicer than LCDs actually!

I love the idea however I do see a design flaw, as a guitarist I have a lot of pedals and always the switch is at the bottom of the pedal not at the top, so you don't worry about knocking into knobs and such. If they have a way to flip it instead and have everything be that way it would be a much better design with player in mind and also still be an arduino, yes I feel it may be more expensive with research etc. but I also feel by doing so they could tap into the guitar market much easier with thinking about the person performing while also thinking of the person who is building. Besides that I myself am interested in this product and curious to see what kind of sounds I can make with it.

Can you have more than one effect at a time? Combine effects?

They don't have code for that yet but I imagine it would be possible with some tinkering. The only thing would be buttons for adjusting the effect percentages. One thing I didn't get to mention in the review is that the back GPIO pins are not used by the board so if you needed to add in more buttons, switches or other things you could totally do it so I think your idea would be possible.

Hey Liz, great video! My daughter was big fan of the buzz effect! I love those screens, they are super sharp and easy to use. You can pick them up from eBay or Aliexpress for about $5 delivered for the 1.4" version, also comes in a 0.96" version for cheaper that is the same resolution and pin layout. I've never seen them in that black colour though! Search for "oled display" and it should come up. Were you using a 9v guitar pedal supply? The polarity is reversed on them so it wouldn't work on the mega barrel jack. Its awesome that they are open source, I bought the amp chip from their uno pedal with the intention of making one, but its on my endless backlog!

Thanks! Glad she enjoyed the fuzz effect- that's also my favorite =D. I was really impressed by the screen, definitely going to try and implement some in future projects. Thanks for the tip about Aliexpress. I did try a guitar supply so that explains it! Wasn't aware of that. I also love that they're open source. Their pedal analysis articles are really great as well.

Thanks for the recommendation! I was in a search for helping hand but most of what I found was overpriced - this one is reasonable, so I'll probably buy it! And I LOVE lava lamps and everything 90s! I don't have one but I do have fiber optic lamp :)

Yeah they can get pricey and honestly I have such a hard time getting them to be at a good angle because one is always slightly too faraway or awkward. Me too! I unfortunately can't really leave the lava lamps on anymore because of my kitties since they have no fear around hot things but they still look cool =)

For those wondering the FAQ on the ElectroSmash website says "Is pedalSHIELD MEGA suitable for bass players? Yes, but you need to swap 1 capacitor (C1) from 0.1uF to 0.47uF, allowing lower frequencies into the circuit, that is all."

Total waste of a time of a pedal build, way too noisy (static loud hissing, used all sorts of power adapters and whatever they advised and more), their technical support is a joke, contacted them by email, also the issue has been raised in their forums and at the end to have them say this: "Arduino was never designed as an audio processor, with the pedalSHIELD project with "hack" the board so you can have fun and experiment programming your own effects." The pedal is really unusable. Best to save your money and buy a pedal kit, that was design from the start to be used for such. That is my two cents......
