I recently ran the original for my 1e group - most of us had played it in the 1980s, so we agreed in advance for the players to try as much as possible to approach it from the medieval mindset. As it is essentially a bit of an ‘escape room’ adventure, I changed it slightly by making hunting down the mind flayer (to whom I gave greater control of the ship’s creatures), who had a quest item, the centre of the plot.

How did they get on with the meta-knowledge/character knowledge separation? Nice take on the mind-flayer :) I might steal that idea next time I run it!

@@WillyMuffinUK They did well - I had to say 'remember, your character doesn't know that' a few times, but my players put the effort in to try to role play it through with a pre-tech/magical mindset throughout.

That's thet one module I wish I had played back in the day. Mid 80s, classic 1st edition rules, playing for 8 hours a day and still never managed to finish Temple of Elemental Evil!

I really like this adventure. I'm planning on running it for a game called Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland. It's perfectly suited for it. I was playing the Goodman Games 5e version but we had a very unreliable DM, sadly. I was having a great time with it!

Fantastic video, as usual. The module is useable in any Low Tech campaign, as long as the GM is willing to deal with he implications to the campaign of the insertion of the technology. An interesting counterpoint is "Temple of the Frog" which is similar in concept, but far poorer in execution. And if you have a Campaign world with where verisimilitude is a concern, its implications are *not* as easily dealt with.

City of the Gods is another in D&D terms - but I find that one very hand-wavy when it comes to its ship. Of the three - Barrier Peaks/Frog/Gods - Barrier Peaks does do the SF in a fantasy setting best, in my opinion. But I'm also a heretic that amalgamated Greyhawk Ruins with Temple of the Frog to form some pseduo-ArneGygaxian monstrosity, so...

@@WillyMuffinUK Well 'm the guy who took the aliens from Frog and turned them into a reptile DNA spliced Human group that thinks they are the "master race" and are paternalistic towards privative humans (and kinda, well dreadful overall). I needed a "third" related sub-species to be facing off against Serpentfolk and Lizardmen cultures. So I dig it, man. :)
