Can a 4 pole motor be checked this way also?

I believe you could use this to measure a 4 pole motor, although I'm not sure how meaningful the results would be. Once you get into a motor with a 4 pole rotor you also get into more coils in the stator. So, for example, if you have a 4 pole rotor with a 6 pole stator and you measure the resistance between 2 of the solder tabs you would be measuring the resistance of 4 of the 6 coils. The resistance rating would be valid, but would be difficult to measure a single coil.
