Review: Johnnie Walker Red VS Black

Lots of people new to whisky ask me about the difference between Johnnie Walker Red Label and Johnnie Walker Black Label. Let's take a look at both expressions from the whisky giant.

I enjoy both Red and Black. However, I find JW Black to have a very strong smoky taste when compared to the. Red. I have no problem with that taste, as I like it. I respect the fact that we each have our own palate.

Black Label was my introduction to scotch whisky in general, even though my current favorites are Talisker 10, Laphroaig QC and Lagavulin 16, Black Label holds a special place in my heart, it's great.

I'm gonna comment from a common man's point of view. Red Label is Heaven. Coz that is one whiskey that I can afford (whenever I can). Yes, I don't have it by itself, but even if I do.. it tastes great.

I completely agree with you! I always thought that all whiskey is the same until I tried Black Label. At least I can say it blew my mind with how good it was! Aroma, creaminess with nice long burn in throat with this fine aftertaste. There's also degree of sweetness but it seems more natural than in other whiskey. I drink first shot straight and after that I mix it with sparkling water.

I tend to always have either a bottle of rd or black as my every day drink. Black is a bit more sophisticated but the red is also good stuff.

Interestingly, I find Red with just a tiny bit water much more palatable than Black. Simply love the salty taste. Cant really relate to the people here saying Red is too harsh.

I did a side by side blind test with these two. The black is a far better product no question. However in my test, I preferred the red.

i love red label. i gave uo drinking for 19 years and decided to give it a go again now that im an adult and when I 1st started drinking it , it was very smokey tasting to me and thats what i was digging about it. recently it lost its smokey flavor and i assumed that was just me. i had switched to black and i like it. it has more of a bitter quality to it. but as far as an evening relaxer i prefer the red label taste. im an amateur drinker..... unnaturaully high tolerance. maybe my paller has changed a bit after aquiring a taste for scotch and whiskey.

The first time I tried the black label I wasn't ready for the smoke or peat flavours so wasn't fussed, after having it a couple more times however I absolutely love it. Can often get it on special here in the UK for around £22 which I think is a decent price. The double black and green label are also very good.

I love how objective you are about whiskey in general. Any whiskey enthusiast would bash on Red Label any day of the week. You just gave it a chance and that is fantastic! It's still pretty bad though...

I like the Red, but Love the Black! I buy both. Red on ice at the golf course or BBQ. Black is my daily sipper. Neat, with water or on ice, Black is great! Cheers 😂

I suspect there has been a lot of variability in the JW Red over the past few years. I say this because along with myself, others have commented that 5-7 years ago it was very different than it is today. With today being much better. JW Red is one of my favorite if not my favorite in the $30 and under category. I really like JW Black also, but its a very different animal. Not as vibrant or bold as Red and it seems sweeter, more anemic and less smokey to my taste although it has more layers and complexity and a longer finish.

Red is real scotch to me when I drink it, I drink a lot of scotches and whenever I go back to red it surprises me with the bold flavours, people say it's harsh but you know your drinking a real blended scotch the best in it's category in my opinion.

I've hated whisky for a long time because we only had these cheap ass drinks, even cheaper than Red Label. However the Black Label is a lot better and you don't have to mix it.

I'm not a whisky drinker but I've the feeling it's going to change because I really like whisky-coca, at work my boss and a colleague give a try with Jack Daniels and I start drinking whisky at this moment... now I bought a JW Black and it was perfect with the coca... I almost finish the bottle in a week... I bought the Red and the mix was not so good... when Black called me everyday, Red doesn't....

I bought a JW red label this morning. I tried it many years ago, and it put me off drinking whisky. This time I enjoyed it, the smokey flavour is exactly what I like of it. I'm really curious to compare it with the black label.

The JW Red today is much batter than it used to be 10 years ago. They dialed up the malt and Talisker content. It has a lovely nose, that I like better than that JW Black.

Very true their both entry level whiskeys from the same brand. It all depends on your palate. If your not crazy about Scotch particularly Johnny Walker than the Red is for you. If you do then the Black is more suitable.

My daughter has got me black label for Christmas so I'm looking forward to it, I usually drink teachers because I love a peaty smokey whisky , I like bells for the hint of seaweed and smoke . But I like the grouse which has not got smokey peat , so I'm easy but I prefer a smokey whisky.

Good review. In my opinion, JW Red is much too smoky for a beginner. Some grow to love it, I'm not sure I ever will. I do enjoy JW Black.

Bobby, I've had both the black and red. The red when drank neat was harsh. I tasted a ton of smoke / peat. I'm not an expert by any means. When I had the black I noticed it's much smoother to drink neat or with ice. I didn't notice the "smoke" as much with it... I do prefer red with coke or Pepsi. Am I missing something? - cheers from Ontario!!

I've subscribed. But I must say I find the Black to be harsh. Red is much easier on the palate. Certainly the Black, despite the much- enjoyed smokiness, is not worth the difference in price. Remember that until very recent times, whiskey has been a working man's pleasure. Neither the Scots nor the Irish prospered under English rule. There's a few reasons why Red is preferred over Black in both Scotland and Ireland!

Also the age statement on a scotch bottle indicates the youngest whisky in the bottle. Usually that whisky is the base of the blend the % of the youngest whisky is higher than the other blends.

it was always funny to see people order black at the bar where I worked they usually just say it because it's the only one they can adequately pronounce and it's a icon. Usually they end up not really getting excited about it because they never drink scotch and are just at a wedding or banquet so they want to look cool and order it on the rocks. Truth is there is a lot of peat smoky flavor in black not really in red but red burns too much black is very smooth but it still tastes like scotch so unless you drink scotch I would usually recommend people brandy so they would enjoy it with coke more

Red Label for mixing, Black Label on the rocks, every other Johnnie neat. All the Red Label bashers are people who don’t understand its role which is to be a cheap Scotch to be mixed with soda. You don’t want to waste a good tasting expensive Scotch by mixing it with soda. Black is still relatively cheap and is good with soda too but everything else is basically throwing your money away.

Walker black or Jim beam double oak in my opinion, I've had many different whisky some cheap some expensive the best being Glenlivet 18 (that stuff is phenomenal, the only whisky I have ever enjoyed on the rocks and I feel that it still holds so much flavour but is best sipped neat) but if not that personally at a good price JW black or JB double oak are fantastic whisk(e)y's, not the biggest bourbon fan but double oak suprised me so much I nearly had a bottle in a week! And JW black is a great introduction and has more than enough depth and isn't harsh at all!

After effects are similar to me means both helped me to have nice sleep.....but Red label is not meant to have neat it only works well with soda and other mixtures ....Black label is best to have neat ...or just few drops of water to open it up more .......Black label is way far far smoother whiskey .....red is harsh on the pallet

Black label is good in price, taste. Red lable taste like whisky mixed with pure alchohol such as vodka or gin. For me, real scotch whisky start from black label. blue label is fantastic. Black one is cost effective in my opinion.

These two shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. Yes, JW Black can be rather inconsistent these days, but when it's good it's still a pretty good whisky. Not great, but definitely good. Red Label, on the other hand, is garbage. I wouldn't even buy it as a mixer. You'd have to be a serious penny pincher to not add those few extra notes and get Black instead of Red.

I noticed jw black sometimes tastes smooth and caramelly, and other times quite grainy as if over-produced I noticed if I let it air out it smoothens, could it be maybe it just needs to air like a fine wine?

I love black label, it's my favorite whiskey but unfortunately it costs about 280 us dollars where I'm from, Kuwait (which is a dry country) so I only get to buy and enjoy about 2 bottles a month😂

the base of comparing any alcohol with another is drinking it neat ....or better with a drop or two of water .....you might laugh but I find red label just as good as black label Neat ! ....it's has a more fruity flavour than the black....hell I even know people who say it's better !

The system Show Irish whiskey is usually a pretty accessible way of getting into whisk(e)y. It is usually a lot lighter than a scotch or Bourbon. I recommend buying a small bottle of Jameson as that is a pretty smooth whiskey that tastes a little like flowers. However, my first bottle was a Crown Royal which is also pretty smooth and accessible to beginners. Either way, just be aware that regardless of what you drink, it is still alcohol and you will still taste it a little bit in everything. There is no such thing as a whisk(e)y that you can drink like a soda (which is probably a good thing since drinking too much is bad).

Life's too precious to drink JW Red Label and the Black Label isn't worth the money either, since you can buy e.g. Tomatin Legacy bottled at 43% abv pure single malt at the same price , which is a far better option.
