Lightning's LS218 is a true electric superbike. It's clean, it's green - and it filled Loz's trousers with steaming lumps of adrenaline. We've tested a number of 200-horsepower superbikes, but nothing - NOTHING - accelerates like this thing. It's excess for the sake of excess, like all the best motorcycles are - and it's beautiful, and Loz very nearly broke it. For a full review, including a lot more facts and figures, visit Gizmag: www.gizmag.com/lightning-ls218...
Huge thanks to Richard and Jojo Hatfield, and the Lightning Motorcycles team for their patience and assistance. Thanks to Nick Lavars for his accessory kit demonstration and Isaac Rowntree for his very specific trombone skills.

I wondered about the range of the bike. There's a lot about that in the full review, starting with this: _"Of course, the main barriers to overcome are battery range, battery price and charging infrastructure, and if the charging infrastructure was there, the current range figures simply wouldn't be an issue. The LS-218 ships with either a 12, a 15 or a 20 kWh battery pack, getting you a maximum range of 120, 150 or 180 miles respectively. Charging time is around 30 minutes on a DC fast charger, and I don't know many sportsbike riders who don't appreciate a half-hour break after a couple of hours in the saddle."_
@craigfirman1809
@craigfirman1809 4 жыл бұрын
z4k the problem like you said is infrastructure. Say I went on a group ride with this bike. After the first hundred mile or so we stop to get something to eat. But there’s no chargers there. So I alone would dictate where we stop to eat just so I can recharge whereas everyone else can refill anywhere in 5 minutes. If the whole or most of the group had one it would be fine. If chargers were everywhere it would be fine etc. The infrastructure for me (in Australia) just isn’t there and probably won’t be where the groups ride to...
@fermitupoupon1754
@fermitupoupon1754 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigfirman1809 It's not just in Australia where infrastructure is the limiting factor in group rides or other long distance rides. Even here in NL, with 47.000 charging points in the country. And that's a country half the size of Tasmania. Even with that kind of density about half of all chargers are only 11kW chargers. Maybe a third are 22kW and then there's a 50kW+ every now and then. Especially once you get outside of the Edge City metro area. I live in a metro area of about a million people and the nearest 50kW fast charge station is 20km outside city limits along the motorway. There's a reason why I don't take the C-Evolution on trips and group rides. I don't want to be the reason why we have to stop for an hour every hour and a half. Sure I only have a 14kW battery to charge, but again, most charging stations are only 11kW. It takes an hour to get a 10-90 charge there. It's great for the city and commuting. It works fine for riding on your own or with a pilion, but it just doesn't work for group rides.
@craigfirman1809
@craigfirman1809 4 жыл бұрын
Fermitu Poupon true but, if that 11kw charger was where you stopped for lunch. That would recharge passively without the other riders specifically having to wait for you. The LS-218 has 180 miles of range with the 20kwh battery. That’s 2-3 hours of riding. For long distance rides that’s not enough but for rides 120 miles up a twisty road, stop for lunch, then come back it could work... but the would need to be a charger where the lunch stop is. I couldn’t find if regenerative braking increases its range or if that’s already factored in, because on a twisty road on and off the power regen could increase range. The LS-218 really was designed for the track. So attending a track day, bringing the bike on a trailer would be perfect. A generator might come in useful to add a little charge during lunch or breaks. but I’m not sure how much range it would have at higher speeds and therefore more consistent high power usage.
@fermitupoupon1754
@fermitupoupon1754 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigfirman1809 usually the range is based on a standardised test, much like MPG figures for cars. So yes, that 180mi figure should include regenerative braking with all power modes etc set to 'normal' or whatever the default setting is. I know my C-evolution can do more than the 160km BMW specifies, I've had to limp to a charger a couple of times. But generally I'd say practical range is 130km. So about an hour of motorway speeds or an hour and a half ish of carving corners on dikes and b-roads. I mean it's easy enough to make it work if the people in the group are cool with it, but it does add an amount of hassle. I mean sure, I could park my scooter at a charger and ride pillion for 10km to a place to have lunch, then pick up the scooter afterwards. It's all stuff that can be worked around with relative ease, but I have found that most riders think of it as more hassle than it's worth.

I like loud bikes. Not because I wanna be like Hurr Durr look at me, but because I like that it has this kind of raw nature to it. The sound of hearing the engine scream while accelerating is what really puts a smile on my face. And I don't really understand what is so bad about liking bikes with a good sound. I surely could get used to an electric bike but having a 200bhp Engine directly underneath you and feeling / hearing it go is quite an amazing feeling.

It’s bollocks. Cra&&ing in the woods is primordial but most of us civilised people have grown out of it.

Sounds like an absolutely amazing bike but I completely disagree with his point about the noise. Having a loud bike isn't putting the responsibility for your safety on anybody else, it's simply one more tool in your arsenal to reduce the possibility of you not being noticed and therefore being hit by a car driver.

I think they should go the other way with the sound of the bike. Try to make the thing as quiet as possible. How awesome would it be driving down the highway at 350 kph, in pure darkness, with absolutely no sound coming from the engine? You would feel like a freaking Cyberpunk Ninja, dude. You would be the silent death, floating on the night wind. Nobody could touch you. Nobody could follow you. Nobody could sense you coming...until it's to late. I mean, loud engines are cool too, but I also think there is a certain appeal to having your bike be quiet as a field mouse, as it rips down the road at break neck speeds. Don't even try to have it sound like a jet engine. No, go further than that, make it sound like nothing. Completely silent. That would be cool. Or at least it would be AS cool as a loud engine.

Wow, that was a really good save and recovery you made when the steering lock engaged, honestly I would think 9/10 riders would have just not been paying enough attention to react in time, or would have panicked and dropped the bike.... I've seen many people drop a bike at low speed in the parking lot trying to park, or at the gas station, or similar situations. I guess they just really aren't "on guard" as I like to call it when I'm making sure I'm always staying alert and ready to react quickly to anything unexpected and I'm scanning my surroundings trying to pay attention to even the little things like sand/gravel/oil in a parking spot. When I'm at low speed I'm always being aware of any sudden changes in center of gravity or momentum so I can react quickly enough to keep the weight of the bike from gaining any momentum in an unwanted direction.... Once a bike starts to tip over and gain momentum in any one direction unexpectedly and start to catch a rider off balance it's really difficult to save at that point.....

So that one case proved to me that yes, being able to hear a motorcycle does matter

An argument for a loud bike: there are 30 million people in California in the US. Lane splitting is legal here and has been shown to save motorcyclists. When lane splitting we are in a dangerous place (still less dangerous than sitting in the back of a queue and hoping the next car coming down the road is paying attention and doesn't slam into the back of us). I commute in a major metropolitan area and having an audible bike helps make cars aware of my presence. I can see it in action when they move over to give me more room for safer passage. When I'm behind other motorcycles they're often not nearly as loud and more prone to having cars unaware of their existence. At typical freeway speed I do not think there is a significant advantage to having a loud bike. But as I said, when lane splitting in heavy nearly stopped traffic on a freeway or in a city it makes a huge difference. Most states don't allow lane splitting so most people (here) don't get this perspective.

I agree, when riding a bike in a city, being loud lets people locate you better... on the interstate where the Doppler effect actually makes a difference, there is no fear of someone running you over unless traffic is stopped and then the Doppler effect isn't a factor

Kian Leonard My exhaust is loud. Obnoxiously loud (I can be heard from 2 blocks away if I'm on throttle). I've still almost been run over by cars on the freeway in light traffic. Not lane splitting. Just commuting at freeway speeds. I wear a white jacket. I don't ride in people's blindspot, but I will ride next to a person or slightly ahead of them. My goal is that any look to the side and I'll clearly be visible. On more than one occasion I've had a person change lanes into my line while I'm in it, and crowd me into lane splitting between them and the car on the other side of me. Just being loud isn't enough. Just being visible isn't enough (I think wearing all black is fucking retarded). People will change lanes into a bus. There's only so much that being loud or visible will do if the driver just isn't paying any attention. I ride regularly. Day time. Night time. Rain or shine. I ride for fun, and I commute on a bike. I've ridden for about 10 years now and never been down. I play a game when I ride. I call it: "Who's trying to kill me now?" If I look around and I can't identify one or more vehicles that run a high risk of potentially making a movement that could kill me, then the answer to my question is "me". Having an audible bike is a tool. It's once I use to my advantage, and I'll blip the throttle occasionally when lane splitting (yes I occasionally see people literally get scared and jump in their cars). I tend to ride fairly fast. When lane splitting I'll often end up behind another rider, and I can absolutely see my exhaust working. Cars are slower to give a little extra space when the bike is quieter because they're harder to hear. By this I mean that I'm familiar with how far ahead I can see people slide over a foot or whatever to give me space. That happens much less often and at much closer distances with less loud bikes.
@maxcoseti
@maxcoseti 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but the argument that you are putting your safety in the hands of car drivers still stands, everytime you lane split you are doing just that, the loud exhaust still helps though. I also think you are 100% on point with the "Who's trying to kill me now?" thing, that's the right attitude
@zero11010
@zero11010 7 жыл бұрын
maxcoseti I agree with the root of what you're saying. It still needs to be accepted with the understanding that this is true any time you're on a motorcycle and it isn't specific to lane splitting. I don't think that lane splitting is inherently more dangerous than not, and statistics show that, when done responsibly (that's important) it is, in fact, less dangerous than not lane splitting. As an example, go watch any car crash compilation video. A substantial percentage of these are inattentive drivers plowing into the back of another car. If it was a motorcycle being crashed into instead a 3,000lbs car it would be a much bigger deal (there are a fair number of very low speed collisions of this nature on youtube, often the bike rider doesn't even hit the ground - these guys are extremely lucky!). If in all of these cases bikes were lane splitting and not at the back of the queue of cars motorcycles would NEVER get hit in this way. As I said, I've ridden for about a decade now. Not just weekend riding for fun but commute riding putting decent miles down on a regular basis. Almost every REALLY close call I have had with another car has been entirely unrelated to lane splitting. I could go on for a while about how to minimize risk while on a bike, especially while lane splitting. The single biggest two factors are: * slow down. if you don't go more than 10-20 miles an hour faster than traffic it's easier for everyone to react (you and the cars). So, if traffic is stopped, lane splitting at 40mph is just stupid. * gaps in traffic big enough for a car to fit in are the biggest danger, those are where a car may want to change lanes into. Watch for heads turning (the head itself past the head rest in the driver's seat, or the head visible in the side view mirror), watch for wheels angling (you can see the tire turn before the car starts to shift direction). And, in general, when you see these gaps slow down to more closely match the speed of traffic.

I can already see this bike on everyone's yard in the future and for the throttle problem I think people need to get used to the throttle so they don't drop it, even you with more experience in driving the bike will nail every turn or U-turn I just wish this to have good brakes coz few people are not as responsible as a few riders . For the exhaust problem yeah few people will criticize it for that but I can live without a exhaust note. Great video keep up the good work

It's one of the things I'll miss the most about petrol bikes is the noise, it's so cool, the smell of cleanly burnt petrol and the gears are another little thing but hey, it's for the Planet so I'm all for it. Besides, with the noise thing, the BMW i8 has got a really cool way of sorting that, they should make that an option for electric vehicles, sound of your choice =P

why having a loud exhaust if you can use the horn as an alternative then?

Liquid Courage A horn is something that people don't hear all the time. Typically when people hear a horn near them they look for the reason and it's originator. Exhaust is something that's constant and yes there are rev bombs but a horn is purpose built. I bring up the doppler effect because most of the time people think of loud pipes especially here in california as a preventative measure against people coming into your lane or cutting you off, yet you typically don't hear even a loud motorcycle until they're 1 maybe 2 car lengths behind you. I've got 2 bikes, one is really loud and the other is very quiet. I've never noticed a difference in the amount of people that cut me off between the two.
