I played all the old TRs on PC as a kid and yet this is the first time I'm hearing about a level editor??? Damn! It would be nice if it were included with the remaster of IV-VI, but I doubt it. Either way, nice review! I love fanmade projects like this one - and I love listening to reviewers who aren't overly loud and overly excited, and who don't drone on and on when a video of medium length is enough. Extra kudos for actual subtitles!!

I played Sabatu's Tomb Raider sometime last year and it was one of the best TRLE's I have ever played. I have to agree with you on some of the jumps, it felt like it was made in mind for people that know a lot about corner jumping/speedrunning techniques of the classic Tomb Raider games. I did enjoy the difficulty of the game, but also appreciated that you can save at any time. Enjoyed the review. Hope you cover other TRLE level sets in the future!

What a brilliant review - completely identified with the joys and frustrations and the absolutely incredible job Sabatu did (honestly, I now prefer this to the original!!). Tomb Raider 2 is equally as brilliant (plus the Atlanteam Armour and Seer's stone) so I can't wait to see what you make of it. Spoiler - I spent a few days trying to perfect one of the final jumps in Sabatu's TR2. Good luck :)

I enjoyed the first two levels of Sabatu's TR1... but not only were later levels near impossible but some sections, to me, seemed only traversable if you had knowledge from already failing / dying - that is, there was no way to figure out the threat beforehand - which just seemed unfair! So I stopped, peeved. However, the two levels I did play were excellent - visually exciting, different yet composed of original level elements (so seemed familiar) yet challenging with twists. Some old TR tropes remain - like, in later TR games if you away from the start ASAP you've missed a secret already - you have to go over everything with a magnifying glass. It was great fun and easily the best fan TR level I've played.
@Jemisscor2 ай бұрын
I completely understand your frustration. Many obstacles got me riled up. It is unfair that you have to die/fall first, before you know how to avoid the threat the next time. TR3 does this a lot 🤬 There were some parts of this game that just reminded me of the piss-taking that TR3 does.🥴

13:07 It's not just you. I recall really hating that part, having to figure out the perfect trajectory by paying attention to both distance and elevation of the point you jump off of (I think Tomb Raider works better with simpler math). And I also got stuck on those pressure plates, although I like to think it speaks well of my intelligence. Because how is it even supposed to work -- are the columns not providing enough pressure already? I can understand underwater boulders -- Sabatu's level, so wind or rain, boulder's gotta roll, but this? My favorite level was City of Vilcabamba, as it seemed like a straight improvement over the original for me. Otherwise I always had some quibbles, even If I thought a level was generally good. For example, I thought Tomb of Qualopec was great, but it bothered me that it had elements of the previous environments mixed in. The way I see it, one of the strengths of the original is how pristine it looks, contrasting with what we've seen before. I was rather impressed with Colloseum as well though. And generally I liked the first half of the game better. It started to lose me in Egypt, and then I rage quit after a progression stopping bug in Natla's Mines. I deleted the thing form my hard drive and vowed never to play anything from Sabatu ever again. So naturally, as soon as he released his remake of Tomb Raider 2 I immediately started playing :) Now I regret deleting the saves, as I'm rather curious about how many boulders are there in Atlantis now. Oh well, guess I'll have to replay from the start.
@Jemisscor2 ай бұрын
@@Mrityugata Thanks so much for taking the time to write that, and thank you for watching! I agree with what you said about figuring out the perfect trajectory. Nightmare 😅 Some of those puzzles as well. I definitely have to be in the right mindset to play games like this. I loved how City of Vilcabamba was expanded! For me, I enjoyed Tomb of Qualopec in this game because I actually didn't like the contrast in the original game, so it's interesting to read your point of view. I just remember the oranges and pinks/reds were everywhere and felt OTT. I appreciate that the developers were going for that pristine look of an untouched tomb for many years, but I enjoyed how Sabatu intertwined it with nature instead, still giving the impression that the tomb had been left for years. That's a shame about the bug in Natla's mines when you played. You were so close to the end! There were way more egg pod things in Atlantis than I was expecting 😅 How far did you get with Sabatu's TR2?
@Mrityugata2 ай бұрын
@@Jemisscor That one I did finish, although I was close to dropping it near the end (way too much screen shaking, among other things). Aside from the ending though, I liked it a lot. There were some things I wasn't a fan of, like available ammo to enemies ratio or the mysterious disappearance of the monks, but generally I was really enjoying the game. What stood out the most to me was the Maria Doria section. It's my favorite part of Tomb Raider 2, so I was expecting to complain a lot about a remake, but that was not the case, I absolutely loved it. By the way, there's also Sabatu's Tomb Raider 1 Gold - The Atlantean Armor, which is not a remake of Unfinished Business, but rather original levels set in TR1 environments.
@Jemisscor11 күн бұрын
@@MrityugataSorry I completely missed this comment. I am enjoying Sabatu's TR2 and I liked the Maria Doria level as well. 😊 It is a very difficult game though 😅 I just finished playing the penultimate level today and it was insane! I'll definitely be giving Atlantean Armour a shot. Not sure when though. I'm wondering if I should do reactions of the new Remasters in Feb, but loads of people will be doing the same 🤔

I never own the original game when I was younger. Only had 2 and 3. I finally played it earlier this year when the remastered came out and I completely fell in love with it. The locations were all so stunning to me. I loved all the tombs, caves, ruins and the isolated feeling the game gave you. The lack of tombs and the heavy emphasis of 3rd person shooting is what made the other games not feel as great as the original
@Jemisscor2 ай бұрын
@@MR.__G Definitely! I loved TR1 for the reasons you said. The tombs and being so isolated. At times there was no sound apart from your own footsteps. Combat with humans was minimal, but worked well, like the no-weapons level, or Pierre showing up throughout Greece because you're both trying to find the second piece of the Scion. I do like the other games but that feeling of isolation is gone when there are too many humans.

@@Jemisscor I couldn’t agree more with you. From the cave all the way to the final Egypt level for me felt like great level after great level. Lots of great puzzles and amazing looking locations. The remastered really made them look even better.. and like you I do like the other games but the 1st will always feel like the ultimate TR experience. I never played TR4 but I saw some reviews on it. I feel like I will enjoy that game because it went back to tombs after its departure in 2 & 3. Hopefully that one gets a remaster as well

I would have been so interested in this if it didn't have a focus on difficulty and tedious stuff for some reason. Why not just focus on making a fresh fun experience first and foremost? 7 switches to open a door, really? What does that do for the experience, other than feel like exhausting filler? Why "hair pullingly" obtuse jumps? Where does the word "fun" fit into this notion? It seems like the mod author took some of the worst lessons from classic TR and dialed them up to 11, which is a big shame for all the positives that could shine through.
@Jemisscor2 ай бұрын
I completely understand why you would feel that way. For me, it was the satisfaction I felt after being able to complete something difficult. I definitely had to be in the right mood to play though, and take breaks when I had enough 😅 It took me 3 sittings to get through the first Egypt level

I played the first game so many times as a young teen that I beat the entire game without using a single health pack. It's been twenty years now, but I get I could still crush that game. hmm, I'm not sure if I want to endure all this. I already think the main TR1 game is annoying and unfair. Final boss especially. I want the game to be wondrous and fun. And when it's not, I can't really justify playing it. It's not like bullet sponge boss fights are a good time. You don't feel accomplished by any of it.
