Review of the New Parker 51 Fountain Pen released in 2021. Is the pen the genuine article or is it another cash grab? Love it or leave it? I guess you'll have to watch the review and find out.

This pen was provided to me on loan for an honest review by Goldspot Pens. Thanks Goldspot Pens. I love you guys.
Review format:
Background information: history in the brand ect.
The Neutral Zone: elements about the pen that are neither good or bad, or can be good or bad depending on you.
The good: things about the pen that are good.
The bad: talking coin. Money matter regarding the pen.
The ugly: elements about the pen that should not be such as defects, design elements, and pretty much anything that if I can find, they should have found it!
It’s High Noon: should you or should you not “pull the trigger” on the pen?
Be advised that all my reviews are uninfluenced. The opinions expressed are a true and honest representation of myself and no one else. Period.

I agree 100% with your review. Without buying or using one, I can tell immediately that Parker has dropped the ball on this version of the legendary 51. My mom, who passed away on Dec. 19th 2020, brought her 1957 Parker 51 from Cuba when we came in 1971. Several years ago, before she was stricken with Alzheimer’s, she gave me the pen. It writes beautifully, and it’s a solid pen. I also have the original box that came with it. So sad to see what Parker has done this time around. This, NJ resident, thanks you for your reviews! Stay Safe!

For the money of the standard version, you can just buy a vintage, gold-nibbed, Parker 51, and be much happier.

Not in perfect condition, certainly not boxed, but yes; and it will be: a nicer resin, a far higher quality cap (quite possibly gold filled), a superior filling mech., restored and tested by hand (by a fellow enthusiast) etc. One could also opt for a cheaper alternative like a 51 Special, 45, 61, 65, 21, 17 DeLuxe (and certainly others I don't know...)

I think a lot of Roy’s comments can also apply to other pen manufacturers. No one should be resting on their past laurels. There’s a lot of quality competition out there, and we the consumers are more savvy and expect VALUE not just a brand.

A new old stock (NOS) Parker 51 can be found on Ebay for around $200. A restored Parker 51 can be found in the range of $100 - $150. For that you get a 14k gold nib, a filling system that holds a lot of ink, a barrel made of virtually unbreakable and scratch resistant plastic, and a metal cap that you don't have to screw on.

Shows how out of touch Parker's current owners are. They just make crap now that's given as gifts to graduates. I'd say most of the people that buy any lower end Parker pens don't know any better.

"Included free serving of disappointment" is so on the mark. Looks like they're trying to capitalize on the history. Unfortunately this model seems to be made by someone who just finished pen making 101. I'll be cherishing my Dad's old Parkers instead. Not even going to buy a cap! Thanks again for telling it like it is Roy.

If anyone wants a modern pen that is a throwback to an earlier model and has a hooded nb, I'd suggest a modern Aurora Duocart instead. It's a nice looking pen, writes well, seems to feature good materials, and comes with gorgeous packaging befitting its heritage. It also comes with a converter. 😁 It's not the best pen in my collection, but a better way to "scratch the itch" for a vintage-looking pen with a hooded nib than the new Parker 51.

Are all Parker converters compatible with all models? I mean, are for instance old Parker converters from the 90's (i.e. Parker Sonnet) compatible with current 2021 Parker 51? I'm asking because I tried to fit a converter from a 90's Sonnet into a modern 2021's 51 and it looks like I need to push hard (slimmer body on the 51? / thicker diameter on the old converter?), but I didn't to avoid damaging any of both.

So this standard version seems largely a parts bin pen and the money they didn’t spend engineering new components went nowhere else. Not into packaging & presentation, not into marketing, not into a converter or even a *second cartridge.* As you said, it’s laziness or apathy. Both are aggravating. Doubly so when trading on all the history and equity of the old 51.

"Also included, is a free serving of disappointment"...... Kind of sad that you let this gold gem hide out in the middle of the review. This is one of your top five, for sure. Do you think that the nib is hooded so that we can't read "JinHao" on the top of it?

He said it looks like it's the same nib they put on the Jotter/Vector (old IM and Urban). Honestly, a JinHao nib is probably better. I have about 5 or 6 of those Parker nibs and only one of the them is a decent writer.

Thank you for the nice review for it. At first time I saw the design of it, I started to worry that they don't understand their heritage. Also I thought like you. After the end of Parker England in 2012, The Parker Pen Company became an empty shell. That's what I think about this brand for now. We didn't want that expensive screw capped 51ish self-made clone. I just can't understand. Why they did like this.

I agree entirely with your review of the poorly "resurrected" Parker 51. I have a couple of vintage ones, and they are decent FPs. One thing your review didn't notice was the new pen's hood; it doesn't fit the nib as closely as a vintage hood, but more like the hood of an Aurora Duo Cart.

Not to pile on, but I love using my two c1960 51s, as well as my $5 Hero 616 knockoff. They all have fully hooded nibs; I'd call the new 51 semi-hooded. You can generally get a well-restored 1950s-1960s 51 with a gold nib for less than the new version.

Thanks for a very honest review! I just went to my pen drawer and took out my old 51:s and 21: and gave them a pat and took out two of them to ink up. Always nice to be reminded of old loves that has been forgotten for a while. The best 51 I have was found while working in an archive and noone wanted it so it came home w me. It was one of the beginnings of my pen addiction. I had no idea how to fill the pen so had to search on the internet and fell down the rabbit hole. So finding an old Parker 51 can be dangerous!!!! I was never tempted to get the new one, Parker as a pen making company is so far away from what it was. I go for vintage ones, especially those who were made on license by the Penol company in Denmark. Those are fabulous writers, often w a wonderful flex. But the new ones, no, just meh.... The blue colour is nice, but for a company trying to remake and old favourite without any regard for quality, that is just a recipe for disaster because they cannot fool the pen community!

Thanks for a very good review. However brutal, it is honest. I am an old guy, Roy. In my childhood and youth, Parker 51's were current production items. I LOVED this pen model and have every type 51 Parker made - vac fillers, aerometrics, etc. Frankly, I do not know how many 51's I currently own. Maybe three dozen? I have a steel nib version of this retread model on order. (And I knew to order a converter.) No matter how disappointed I might be, I want to have at least one example so I can form my own opinion. Now that I am geriatric and functioning with Swiss cheese for brains, my biggest concern with the reissue is that I will forget the cap is threaded! 😜

I was under the impression that they made the 51 pens starting in 1939. I could be wrong, but I’m not sure they ever used cartridge converters in the 51s. I think that came in with the Parker 45s.

If a pen survives 60 or 70 years, and writes perfectly every day, it must be a very, very good pen, and that was the case with the original P51, an all time great pen.

P51 is forever sullied. I received a message from Iguana Sell and I was going to purchase 12 of the gold and plum pens but as soon as I saw the pics something was not right. It looked like a hotter. I wrote to Parker wondering if it was a Jotter and they never replied back. I will NEVER by a Parker again. Such a cynical money grab for a shoddy product. Bye Bye Parker.

I don't believe there's been a single one that didn't function fine after a good cleaning, and some of these pens are from the late 40s early 50s. The ink reservoir on these pens is very durable, almost amazingly so. I may pick up one of these new versions just to try, as soon as I get tired of using my vintage ones.

Great review. Sad to hear about this take on the Parker 51. I was hoping it would be something I'd want to buy but very doubtful I'd buy this. I see they do have a ballpoint Parker 51, I wonder how that is?

Would you please review the premium "plum" version with gold nib? (With M nib if possible ;)) The problem is, that new 51 in premium version is really good looking pen for some (...me including of course). Such a review would be great sequel for this [indeed excellent] movie! ps. Subscribed :)

As a vintage Parker fan, this looks so disappointing. I wonder if it's fair to say that the 2021 51 is more of an overpriced spiritual successor to the 21 which was designed to have similar design vibes to the 51 but was made with cheaper materials? The great thing about the 21 was it actually writes reliably and nicely was actually cheap and still is. So I'd say this new 51 sounds like a miss even in that comparison.

Well from this review and your nib comparison to the Parker Jotter. I had pre-ordered the Teal with a fine point nib. It hasn't arrived yet. No I'm disappointed before it even arrives. I thought I was getting something from history. To me the filling mechanism didn't matter. I feel like I've been fooled by Parker. Guess I'll inquire about returning the pen. 😕🙁

Phenomenal review of this modern day usurper. I think I will stick with my 50 vintage P-51s. Actually I just need one more to say I have 51 P-51s. Thank you for a straight-up and truly honest review.

When I heard they wanted to bring it back is what hurt the most. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"..... they broke it...... and they shouldn't try to fix it. Parker is indeed my favorite American pen company. It was my first (25 flighter) and infected me with the virus (and happily thriving I thank you). To have seen what they have currently and to see what other titan pen companies are doing... (cough, cough making new creations and fitting in with the market).. it hurts to know they've only done so much and stopped. Reminds me of Jordan shoes. when he stopped at his last shoe, he simply started just making them in different colors and oddly enough people are going ape shitake mushrooms over them. Its aa continuing success. My beloved Parker, ill chuck it up to because you've been bought by many hands and have (not what i'm trying to say) > lost your originality. Cest la vie. I have a lot to say but this isnt a podcast.....

In my opinion ,the vintage Parker 51 having 14k solid gold nib, gold plated cap and aerobatic filling system is the best product in its variety. However,in lower price range the vintage chinese KIN SIN 204 can be chosen in its place.

I'd say I'm a...sort of? fan of Parker through the Duofold Centennial (which is great!), but it looks like they made a disaster-level misstep with this one. Good, informative review!

Thanks that was really good review. The rest seem to just say how awesome it is . Disappointed that the material is so cheap. Truthfully my 51 has always been something I could toss into the bag without much care. Wing sung 618 for me if I wanted a new one.

Why would you bother with a crappy repro? There are tons of 51s out there.

They lost me at "screw on cap". Everything else Roy said was just digging the grave deeper. Newell either don't understand what they have or don't care. However what they HAVE achieved is to make me look for originals on ebay!

Hope the gold nib on these new 51s write excellently, but it doesn't look like that's what's going to happen. I hope you're haivin' a great day!

Great review and my initial impulse of a hard pass when I saw it with a steel nib at that price was about on the nose. I don't know much of the show, but Wanda in the comics was considered one of the most powerful mutants in existence. Case in point, at one time she stripped something like 90% of the mutants in the world of their mutations.
Parker 51 - 2021...Does it live up to the original?
