Kevin, just saw this in the community section of the site. Wish I'd of found it sooner as I found it moving and poignant. It's really hit a note with me as I sit here with what was my dads favorite "homemade" blend. He had a penchant for mixing Sir Water Raleigh aromatic and Borkum Riff Bourbon blend in equal parts. If you ever get a chance, try a bowl or 2, its got a chocolatey cream flavor that I find vey appealing. Smooth and mild and not too sweet. Dad passed in 2015, and during the last conversation I had with him he asked what I thought about heaven. I thought a minute not knowing how to answer, in seeing my hesitation he said this " from now on I want you to remember that heaven is as real as you believe it to be, and heaven I believe is the past". Confused, I said to him Dad, don't you think heaven is the future? Oh no he said " heaven is the past, everyone we've ever known and loved will be there, so heaven is the past but the past will live for eternity ". I've never forgotten those words, dad passed the following morning. I think of that moment often, and it brings a smile to my face. It was a rare moment indeed, Al

Thank you for sharing those moments you had with your dad. Small incidences of family life like those are what stick with us in the best of ways. Orlik DSK was one of my go-to tobaccos while it was made. It wasn't one of my beloved Navy plugs/flakes, but it hit all the right notes nonetheless. I tried the Heinrich's Dark Strong as well. They are very, very similar, yet I found the Heinrich's to have a subtly sweeter character than the DSK. I still have one last tin of DSK in my cellar, but no Heinrich's. I would happily smoke either of these blends!

My Dad smoked camels for years with a zippo. I use a zippo for my pipes. That fuel brings him back to mind all the time. And if i smell someone smoking camels, i know it.

Kevin, you are a blessed man to have such wonderful associations between the people and tobaccos that you love. Thank you for sharing a special moment between you and your dad. The flavor of a sorghum and butter 'spread' is so perfect on toast and pancakes. That definitely temps me to give PH Dark Strong Flake a try. Regard, the tea note - I'm telling you, my friend, your next tasting hobby has got to be tea. You would really pick up and appreciate the flavor profiles of different teas. I find them very similar to the notes you find in tobacco. There is even a Latakia equivalent in tea. All the best that you've had a great weekend, cicadas and all. Be well, stay safe, and rock the awesome to the max - peace Note: a little info on sorghum and molasses. They are different to the extent that they come from different sources and they are made using different production methods. Sorghum syrup is made from the green juice of the sorghum plant, which is extracted from the crushed stalks and then heated to steam off the excess water leaving the syrup behind. Conversely, molasses is the by-product of processing sugar cane into sugar. They can be used interchangably in baking, but you use 1/3 less sugar when using sorghum because it is much sweeter than molasses. That makes me wonder what the 'molasses' source is in each of the blends. No idea, but maybe the Orlik used sorghum and that's why that flavor is more forward. 🤔

Oh man, I'm terribly sorry for your loss. It's little moments like that that mean so much. This one got me a little bit I have to admit. My Dad, using grandma's old recipe, makes the absolute best molasses cookies. Mom makes good cookies but not like my Dad. Best cookies I've ever had. About once a year I beg him to make a batch and then proceed to eat entirely too many. I'm thinking that time of year is about here. I grew up eating it on toast and cathead biscuits. My mother’s family grew sugar cane. I usually used honey. Your dad looks like a fine gentleman. Now I’m hungry 😂

I think it may actually be Orlik Golden Sliced sandwiched between two pieces of stoved Kentucky. They are all made in the same factory in Denmark by STG. Cheers.

Nice review. It's a solid favourite of mine. I think it's all blended by K&K (both this and Orlik DSK) which explains things, they are slightly different, but not by much. Similar for the PH Golden Sliced (which is nicer than the Orlik imo, but not as good as Reiner's LGF).

Thank you! Great info. I actually prefer OGS to Reiners LGF personally, but I admit I have a deep connection with OGS for reasons unknown…funny how some blends just click for a person :)

@@hobbitonpiper Ah yes, it's well loved by many (OGS). "My preference" is how I should have phrased it (rather than 'better than'). Though; OGS is emminently cheaper and easier to aquire.

Hi brother I hope you’re doing well I have a question We all know there are many blends that either cased or topped with alcoholic beverages, My question is: 1- does all the alcohol evaporates during the smoking process 2- in other words does the alcohol enters our system when we smoke these blends

My understanding is no, it does not. Nicotine does though.

I really enjoy PH Dark and Strong, but I’m not a fan of Orlik’s Dark Strong Kentucky, it’s too sweet for me…How might I contact you? Are you on Facebook? I have a question for you…

@@hobbitonpiper I have a tin of the Orlik that I’d be more then happy to send you! I have plenty of the Peter Heinrichs Dark Strong in cellar and that tin of Orlik I may never get to as I have unashamedly way too much tobacco to get through.
