Not to create hype, but The Beginner's Guide changed me on a core level. It changed not only how I look at video games and how I make them, but how I take in art in general. There aren't a lot of games I can say that about.

Hi DMC fan here, and i have to say that is hilarious. You are kinda right about the move lists being kinda necessary but completely hidden behind menus, when I picked the games up a few years back I only figured this stuff out by complete accident looking around the menus, or i looked it up online. More than anything I am super impressed you beat the game with the basic combos though, cuz that game is hard as nails in some parts, that is an accomplishment. I hope this doesn't ruin your experience with the franchise because it is super fun. Except for 2, we don't talk about 2, you could skip 2 and nobody would think less of you. Even the other games pretend 2 never happened. The only thing of note about 2 is that it had a few things that would be perfected in 3 onward. Great video keep up the good work.

9:50 the "fourth" God of War is Ascension. Anyway, what people like the most was the over the top violence, they just aimed to "end the series" giving more of what people wanted. In this sense having a bad story and not reflecting upon Kratos isn't really a bad thing. The game was very honest about what it was.

I'm definitely curious to see your thoughts on GOW4, now. Opinions differ on whether it's partly a redemption story, or just a minor analytical look in what kind of a person Kratos was, but either way I'm still not convinced a story that intended as much heart as GOW4 did was warranted, given the events of the games prior. It's like, when you've gone to the cartoonishly far reach of destroying all of Greece to satisfy a personal want for revenge, I'm just left questioning the very attempts the latest game makes.

Its great to hear someone that shares my response to God of War 2. That title seems so universally lauded as the best before Dad of Boy that I sometimes wondered if I was just missing something in my interpretation. Such a needlessly protracted, un self critical slog of a narrative.

Beginner's Guide is an experience to say the least. Glad you liked GoW3; it's easily the best of the original games. I completely forgot about DMC's lack of a tutorial, that's wild lol.

Interesting take on God of War 3. I was not expecting that. While I did play that game not too long ago, it's been ages since I played 2. I don't remember there being a huge difference in how they portrayed Kratos. If anything, I might even say 3 is worse because of those first-person sections and upping the visceral detail in general. I'm not entirely sure that was intended to come across as putting Kratos in a negative light while 2 is more positive. More that it was just pushing the same kind of thing further. But maybe I'm just remembering wrong. And I that point about how 3 ends is a good one too. Also I have a feeling that 2 might have been suffering from simply being the second part of a trilogy for you, from a story perspective anyway. I often hear people don't like the middle chapter of some trilogies that I don't have a problem with, saying not much happens in them. But I tend to think of it more like parts 2 and 3 are supposed to be two halves of a whole, with the former setting up events of the latter. So I don't mind if things don't move ahead that much in that entry, as what it does establish helps strengthen the one that comes after. But that's just me spit-balling about the nature of trilogies. Cool to see you diving in to the DMC games too. Even though I'm a long time fan, I only actually finished the first one myself recently too. I had tried it before years ago, but only now did I manage to stick through it to the end. So coming from someone who is familiar with the series and played it a bunch already, yeah 1 is extremely rough by modern standards. Although, I would actually advise against playing 2. It's far worse than even 1. It's more an interesting story about a disaster of a development cycle than it has value as a game. On that front it has basically none. 3 is where the series really starts to come in to its own though. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on that. Perhaps a word of advice, it might be worth giving it a couple of runs through to see what it really has to offer. Not beating every mode or anything like that, but at least a second run once you've unlocked all the weapons and know what you're doing. These games really benefit from repeated plays, and they're practically designed around it. So if that sounds like a fun idea, I would recommend it. Oh and also, the Switch version of 3 is the one you should go for if you can. They updated it with a bunch of extra features the other versions don't have. It's a vast improvement that blows out the potential of the game.

Honestly, I'm mostly impressed you got through Devil May Cry the way you did. I'm guessing it was a complete slog to go through with such a limiting move set, especially with some later bosses.

To be fair to GoW2, part of the reason that it feels like the story didn't go anywhere was because partway through development, the creators realized that _the PS2 wasn't powerful enough to do what they wanted._ So rather than letting the story as a whole have a lack-luster ending, they decided to break it up, move to the (then brand new) PS3, and expand the end into its own game (which became GoW3). As you pointed out in your last video, it had the unfortunate side-effect of making _that_ game's ending less satisfying and its story seem pointless. But if you view GoW 2 and 3 as one game broken up between two disks (and systems), it makes what 2 was going for more palatable. Because again, what GoW3 did with Kratos _was the intended ending of GoW 2._ Hope that helps you dislike GoW 2 a little less (or at the very least understand it more).

So, as someone who hasn't played any of the original God of War trilogy, would you recommend skipping the second game? The way you talked about it, the story of the game seems pointless. Would I miss anything skipping from 1 to 3?

Be warned if you continue with the series, DmC2 is bad. DmC3 is really the true birth of the genre (of which, I'd argue, the Bayonetta games are the pinnacle)
