*_"Maybe I'll get over that weird pseudo-sackboy character design & give it a go"_* I'm trying to. Were it not for the characters looking like shit, this would be a flawless game.
+Prince alucard I see what you mean, but in my opinion, the relative differences between the two games (and possibly the two genres?) still make them two very different experiences The "rhythm", especially, is very different; in DarkSouls you have to patiently and cautiously position yourself around the enemies, getting into the groove of dodge/parry->attack; In SOTN (just as an example) most of the time you're merrily jumping around, evading medusa heads and slapping enemies mid-air in the face with your sword/whip/whatevs. It really "feels" different; it's a bit like the difference between a cover-based, tactical shooter and a more frantic one, like Doom, where your character moves like a Bugatti and dodges missiles (missiles!) just by strafing. What makes me really excited about this game is that, even though I'm a SOTN addict, I believe that the very "floaty" combat of that game could improve greatly by getting some of the more thought-out, meticulous pacing of DarkSouls. Also, Castlevania games tend to have (imho) lousy lore and very inconsistent atmosphere. Nothing wrong with some campiness, but I personally prefer the mysterious fogs of DarkSouls to the colourful, almost messy aesthetics of Symphony of the Night. This is just personal preference, of course, but I just see so many possible happy results from the merging of the two. (jesus, this is long. sorry for the rambling)
@dylansmith51618 жыл бұрын

A very well written and edited review of this amazing game. Dark Souls was hugely inspired on the Metroidvania formula so the transition of a souls game to a 2D space makes a lot of sense. Am I the only one who, after playing this game, finds it more enjoyable and challenging than Dark Souls itself? It feels like the Dark Souls mechanics were MADE to be in a Castlevania 2D setting. 2D feels like what Dark Souls was meant to be in the first place. Salt and Sanctuary seems to have the forethought to put everyone's opinions of it in it's own title funnily enough, either your a salty prude who thinks it rips too much from it's derivative games, or you bask in how it translated the concepts and find sanctuary in what it gives in it's own right. I love the fact that they gave a bestiary and the game has an interesting lore, and I already loved the art style for giving it's own feel (having already played Charlie Murder myself and appreciating it there). I am not the most skilled at platforming yet it still managed to be quite enjoyable. 10/10 Would discover the horror of unicorns again. To those who have a lethal dose of salt in them and think this game should be sue'd into oblivion for it's mimicry of the souls series, all I gotta say is this isn't anything new in the gaming industry, and it's certainly not going to stop anytime soon. Really now? Did you know about the hidden walls and the betrayer covenant? Those are pretty easy to miss especially if you weren't vefifying online that you found everything.
@Diskhate8 жыл бұрын
hockeater Yes, i've put almost 180 hours in this game, managed to discover everything by myself (only thing i asked a person for was for the location of one particular monster to complete the "bestiary", which isn't requiered for the trophy anyway) it's not that hard the betrayer covenant, if i remember correctly, was the one for which you need to kill another sanctuary's inhabitants, which i obtained almost by accident on either my second or third playthrough plus, i was beginning to be obsessed by that npc+doors, therefore i was literally checking him after every action i could do the hidden walls/secret passages are definitely the easy part..just check every single wall and try to jump down whenever you see a piece of grass that looks different; i grew up with games like King's Field, Hexen, Castlevania and games like these...i'm acustomed to hidden walls just like dark souls all the secrets aren't impossible to discover once you bruteforce everything..you simply have to do , in different playthroughs, different things from what you did in the first; did you answer "no" to the thief npc in your first run? answer yes this time; did you go left before goin right? In this run go right before left instead
@hockeater8 жыл бұрын
Diskhate Actually it's more than just desecrating a sanctuary. You have to specifically fail to do that, which opens up an optional area called the blackest vault. Basically a gauntlet with the only betrayer sanctuary in the game at the end. Successfully desecrating sanctuaries is how you raise its devotion. Really goddamn overpowered with a mage. What? Some of the strongest spells in the game that don't care about elemental imbalance and which there is NO resistance to? Fucking bullshit hax creed is betrayer.
@Diskhate8 жыл бұрын
hockeater i said that is the quest that "requieres to kill another sanctuary inhabitant", it was just to point out which quest it was, not the entire process
@hockeater8 жыл бұрын
Diskhate Still can't believe how easy it is to do by that point. Finally a game with tangible, good reason to go evil. An incredible amount of easy to attain power.

I think the castlevania influence is most obvious in the powerups that unlock new locations through new platforming abilities. In dark souls, areas are locked off simply through locked doors or story-linked fog walls. In metroidvania games, you acquire abilities that allow you to physically *get to* new areas. I think it's a really beautiful blend of genres

+hsapin I know it's nitpicking but I generally don't like playing games that I dislike the look of. It's the same reason I didn't like the binding of isaac, the gameplay was there but I hated everything else.

For people who are looking to get into playing souls games but can't cause of the frustration this is a pretty good starting point, it's very similar to souls games in design, it retains the difficulty needed to make finally beating a hard boss awesome which is what gave me a better understanding of how to approach a souls game.

I'm not a Dark Souls guy (I think I've barely beaten the first boss of bloodborne), but this game was a great experience. I love the metroidvania elements that forced me to learn and appreciate the dark souls slow combat. Thank you for the review, it's what convinced me to pick the game up in the first place. It was worth it

Pedamorphic character designs are horrible and do not fit with the game's theme.
@gilgamesh3108 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It seems like a cheap attempt in making the game distinct from Dark Souls.
@PrimePixelHD8 жыл бұрын
gilgamesh310 The team responsible for S+S is western right? It seems to me that they wanted to make a RPG with eastern influences, which extended into the artstyle as well as the writing - with plays on japanese phonetics spellings e.g Claymore is now a Kureimoa, another thing which annoyed me and prevented the suspension of disbelief. To put it concisely: In contrast to Dark Souls which is JRPG with western influences, S+S is a Western RPG with eastern influences and they wanted to communicate that.

Prime It was still fun to play though. Going through the game with the base dagger, and not upgrading it at all, was quite thrilling and challenging.

at 6:11 they say 'igavania'...could someone help me out with that? I'm guessing it's a portmanteau of *something* and castlevania?

it's for Koji Igarashi, the guy behind symphony of the night and the subsequent Castlevania games until he left Konami.

looks likr those anime draws made by 8 years kids, those that are draw in the back of their books, i cant stand this game knowing that im controlling that shit
@OnyDeus8 жыл бұрын
+bolivar torres Actually an 8 year old would be an American 2nd to 3rd grader. Someone casually interested in drawing would probably need to be at least 10 to 14 to make similar characters. Considering the 2 game developers drawback of using a skeleton vector animation system, I'm pleased with the outcome. Especially if equipped gear makes a visual difference. I was a little off put by the character at first, but they look small and doesnt need too much attention to play the game and enjoy.

This looks awful, but I'll give it a change because of this video. The problem is that the game desperately needs videos like this one because it looks like an old flash game.
@twodotso8 жыл бұрын
When you get off your high horse you might be able to discover that this game is already widely popular and a huge success. The game had no and still has no need of these videos, but obviously they're beneficial.
@Mezurashii58 жыл бұрын
SnowZegtBlup I need to get off my high horse because I think they went for an art style that looks bad and is generally typical to really bad indie games? I don't see how associating the artstyle with games that have used it makes me narcissistic or impolite...
@twodotso8 жыл бұрын
Mezurashii5 Other than needing to get off your high horse, you should also read my comment properly. My comment is very explicitly criticizes you for claiming that the game is in need of publicity. I am very clearly criticizing you for implying that the game will have trouble being successful if it weren't for these types of videos, while it's very easy to find out that the game is already a great success. Also, your initial comment only claims that "it looks awful" without explaining what is awful and why. Others have no reason to believe that you're criticizing the artstyle when such a phrase is also often used to criticize things in general (as in "the gameplay looks awful, the levels look awful, etc.").
@Mezurashii58 жыл бұрын
SnowZegtBlup I was wondering why are you so agressive towards me for zero reason at all. And I think I figured it out: you're talking about a "huge success" of a game I've never heard about outside of this video, so I guess you must be furious about me not praising it. Or you have problems managing your emotions coming from other sources. I don't know, but you're not pleasant to speak to at all. Yeah, that's the moment when you call me a furfag, tell me I just don't understand you because you're too smart for me and go have a great day.
@twodotso8 жыл бұрын
Mezurashii5 Aggressive? Is this the first adult conversation you've ever had in which someone criticizes you? Also, no reason at all? How about actually responding to the points I'm making rather than being so defensive. You hearing of a game is irrelevant and anecdotal. The success of the game is an objective and verifiable fact, which makes your initial claim false. That's literally what this is all about. You falsely implied the game is not well-known and therefore not a success. I'm pointing out that you're wrong. That's all there is here. Nothing more, nothing less. Also, the last part of your comment is weird and creepy. You're actually having some sort of a fictive argument about things no-one mentioned except for yourself.
