Thank you for your video. 😀 I now reading Andrew S. Tanenbaum "Operating systems. Third edition" (I know that it is now quite old), I hope that in the future I will read "Unix and Linux System Administration".

Thanks for all the videos- I've been using Linux either for work or at home for about 8 years, but these help to reinforce some forgotten info and bring to light some "newer" technologies (tmux rocks!). I was wondering if you planned on creating a video that went over Linux firewalls with iptables, their importance with Linux hardening (which likely requires a video in and of itself), and a case example or two of their setup. Perhaps one for a standard home user who is just accessing the internet for various media, and one for someone who has a LAMP server. Either way, keep up the great work! (PS, I own and have read *most* of U&LSAH, and know it talks about iptables with a case example, but the details are still a little fuzzy)

That's a great idea. I haven't really done any Networking videos -- I just feel like it's a huge topic and I'd need to really plan it out well to make it work. Not saying I'll never do it, but just that I need the time to do it *right.* iptables is one of those complex, janky things that I learn to be good at when it's part of my job every day, and then as soon as I move onto some other specialized area for a few months, it's gone. For what it's worth, I find that BSD's 'pf' (OpenBSD, FreeBSD, etc.) firewall does not have this problem -- it's simple and intuitive (not to mention powerful)

Any reviews on Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment by Stephen A. Rago or The linux programming interface or Advanced Linux Programming By Mark Mitchell, Jeffrey Oldham, Alex Samuel? I'm considering buying these books, please let me know what you think of them :)

Thanks for the videos, I just got my copy of the book, and starting reading it, really good... Do you recommend any good books for beginning programming in Python? and also Ruby? Thanks for your awesome videos please keep them coming when you can!!!
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
The official Python documentation is *amazing!* There are a ton of basic tutorials out there. I also created a basic Ruby tutorial here: kzbin.info/aero/PLtK75qxsQaMJ0MEkOr0b99tMi_wADKRqR -- try it on for size!

Is the 4th edition still useful enough in 2021? I know it's not the most current edition, but I found it on a secondhand book site for $10 which is a fraction of what the 5th edition costs atm.
@tutoriaLinux3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The 5th edition has some new content around containers and the major cloud providers but the 4th is still extremely relevant. Absolute steal for $10

@tutoriaLinux4 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not a security expert, the last time I seriously dabbled in security was like 2014. A LOT of things have changed since then. Maybe I can do an interview with some security engineers at some point and ask them.

bro, do you think that if i complete all your linux basics courses here on youtube, i'll be able to understand your course on Udemy? because i checked them there and i feel like they are a lil bit too technical for me as of now!
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
The course on Udemy actually requires less knowledge than what I show here, so you don't even have to complete all the stuff I've shared here before you start at Udemy (link in description). If you do the basic command-line videos that I've made on KZbin, you should be okay to start on the course there. If anything is unclear, there's a Q/A section where you can ask me questions, and I'll be happy to make sure you're confident that you understand things.

Great! Forget books for a little while, do some fun projects! Set up a website or a blog, install Mattermost (like Slack/Hipchat) and host it for friends, pick a cool open source project and help out for a bit! Once you have basic Linux skills, doing projects is the only way forward.
