This review was great because you truly understood the strengths of this game while making it clear the combat is a matter of personal preference. Just because you did not personally enjoy it, doesn't mean others won't; I'm in the latter category yet understand it needs a LOT of fine tuning. I'm glad it didn't lessen your enjoyment and let's hope it gets a remake sometime in the future! Which might happen based on the tweet by Paul of Bluepoint Games.

Playing this at age 9 was groundbreaking. No other JRPG is like this title. The timed presses kept me engaged in each battle, the characters are amazingly written, the dark story, the main menu music was so mature “if that’s a good word” I always got the sense that everything in the game was fluid and felt interwoven. 9/10 here

that age of gaming is sadly over and any attempt at remake would ruin it. they'd follow ff7 and turn one amazing rpg into 3 or 4 mediocre action games that would take 30 years to see completed.

Definitely a 9 for me. The combat system set a benchmark for me way back in the day. Would love more games to add real-time features to their combat like this. Maybe a full on rhythm game for attacks is a bit much for some people, but it definitely worked for me. Paper Mario 1000 year door had something similar at play but a lot more stripped back. It might work more for ya. PS: Gust of WIND dance-

It definitely needs a remake like FFVII to retell the story especially now that the director/writer of Soul Sacrifice moved to Japan Studio in 2016 as director and has definitely potential to re-write this story. Bluepoint Games technical director just recently expressed interest to remake The Legend of Dragoon on twitter. There are still staff at Japan Studio who worked on this title like Tsutomu Kouno and Keigo Tsuchiya who are still working in the same team. The creators left before PS2 era has even started. Kouno-san worked later on ICO, several Pocket Station games and EyeToy: Ape Escape before he took a big break at Sony to plan out a new IP as the lead of a team. Tsuchiya-san had even a bigger break than Kouno-san. He was part of the concept stage for LocoRoco and become art director. Nobody knows what they are up to now as they haven't released anything new since 2009 but they are working on something have they confirmed, even Shu at E3 2015 who was really excited about this really great project. The Legend of Dragoon remake to Bluepoint Games with involvement from Japan Studio would be after what Kouno's team is working on. We have nothing substantial of info yet but Sony Japan trademarked RaySpace in 2017. If that is a clue since the title has similar structure as LocoRoco then The Legend of Dragoon remake would be after RaySpace when Shawn Layden said they are going to focus on fewer and larger games.
@CornishCreamtea075 жыл бұрын
A remake sounds nice, it's just that would it still be Legend of Dragoon. They won't put a completly battle system in like FFVII? I would like to see a remake similar to the first resident Evil, where they polish and improve upon what's already there.
@TheGoldenPS15 жыл бұрын
@@CornishCreamtea07 The reason why battle system in FFVIIR changed is due to new staff they had to hire for Business Division 1. International market is their target so they thought to reinvent the wheel than keep the same battle system from 1997. Gameplay in SOTC got unchanged by Bluepoint because Ueda supervised the game. With The Legend of Dragoon remake they have no contact with creators since they left Sony in the early days of PS2. Nobody knows where they went. Art director Kenichi Iwata has been with Sony since the early days of PS1 and was interviewed by TV Tokyo in early 2001 when he talked about the next level for RPG on PS2. It was before he left and moved to MS Game Studios Japan to work on Phantom Dust and early work of Lost Odyssey. Creative director Yasuyuki Hasebe came off Super Mario RPG from Squaresoft. He created The Legend of Dragoon and then when Sony Japan said no to the pitch for The Legend of Dragoon 2 he left Sony and the gaming industry. Sony haven't touched this IP for these reasons. Even if there are staff at Japan Studio who worked on it as a team member it was in the PS1 era when RPGs were JRPGs with archaic gameplay issues as the video creator brought up in her video. Japan Studio is very inexperienced with RPGs in modern day. They missed PS2, PS3 and now PS4 generation. And if they tried again it would possible take 10 years to get something out with modern take because they never got to practice on PS2, PS3 and PS4 like Square has.

I was wondering if there was a review for this game, because it seems like the world forgot about Legend of Dragoon. It was an incredible joy that not only is there a review, but an incredibly competent one! I was expecting much less production value for sure haha. Love this game, but totally agree on the battles in general. I get that they dipped like all the budget into the visuals and they are absolutely amazing, but the game definitely takes its time to let you smell the roses. Even if that means shoving the roses in your face. Also gotta agree about additions, cool concept but such a pain in the ass. Especially when you have to do it over and over and over to do any substantial damage. Still have a lot of fond memories of this game, played it with my family as a kid and we still quote the AAA voice acting. Hey now if you said balancing issues such as Kongol I would understand, but sharanda is the strongest character in the game next to meru, you just didn't level her up or get the gear needed, she has second highest speed, strongest magic even way stronger than meru, yea her attack is weak but at dragoon lvl 5 she gets 250sp per shot and being fast that's 500 in a turn basically, 80% self revive capability that's not once per fight, and full heal rez for only 10 mp. Once you get psychbomb x she can one shot all mobs and most bosses with a power down before hand. Only gripe I have with her is the detonate arrow last weapon is obtained right before zieg which sucks because it attacks all enemies on normal attack which would be nice to have for atleast disc 4 and not 2 boss fights that have no aoe to do. Trust me I've beat this game atleast 20 times, every says she sucks but it's because no one takes the time to use her, she is a item thrower heavy nuker with insane heals, I never carry any breezes or prayers when I use her. She killed the divine dragon in 2 spells, she does like 75% of the disc 4 bosses hp with one psych bomb, im telling you she gets my vote for most broken character. Once you get your additions on the other 2 party members you can just psych bomb any trash and one shot to breeze through and get xp/gold easy

I'm really glad you stuck with the game even though you didn't like the timed button presses! I enjoyed that little bit of extra engagement in combat but it ends up being a polarizing point for a lot of people. Also can't agree more with the praise for this game's soundtrack and art!! A couple of things I've discovered revisiting the game: So. Many. Puns. Never realized as a kid that it was 'Hell in a Prison' or that they were the 'Get Rich Gang'. Shana is actually amazing thanks to her high speed, magic defense, and magic attack stats--just use thrown items with her and otherwise do normal attacks in combat! There's so much done to ground the setting and characters--you can't cast magic without dragon powers, everyone has their own personal story, etc. It makes all those magical elements like The Moon that Never Sets and The Black Monster that much more exceptional and legendary because they're special within the universe. Anyway, fantastic review! I'm curious what you might think about Shadow Hearts--it's another game with timed button inputs and a colorful cast. As for games I'd never want to replay but wouldn't mind watching--the new God of War is like that for me!

Yeah the voice acting of the attacks are to some cringy, I kinda loved it but that's my nerdyness loving it. Also I'm a new follower as of now, loved this review and hope you ll make lots more ❤️.

I recently replayed this game and had so much fun. I got to the secret boss (who I never fought as a kid) and he smoked me for 2 days straight, then I just gave up

Pretty good review. This is in my top 3 favorite games. You really nailed this review though. You pronounced everything beautifully. :]

I think I've played this game through 3 times; but always several years apart-long enough to forget everything.

This was a good review. I beat this game last year. I liked Legend of Dragoon but I wouldn't call it a classic like so many people do. It has flaws, especially in the combat and voice acting.

Thank you. :-) I will consider it a cult classic. Flaws and all.

Omg I feel your pain. My 4th disc was scratched, got stuck after the last signet sphere was destroyed.

Yeah I think I agree about the whole timed button press thing. The older I get the less I care for RPGs trying to implement pseudo actiony stuff. A turn based RPG should be a mostly chill time gameplay wise.

Solid review, very objective. I got this game when it came out and to this day, it is my favorite single player game of all time, narrowly beating out morrowind. Luckily for me, I loved the additions system. And the story is so so good.

Thank you. It's a solid game for sure just not for everyone. Oooo a fellow Morrowind lover!! ♡♡

I was waiting on this video. This and Brave Fencer Musashi are the games I played on PS1. I beat this game twice but I killed those additions. BLAZING DYNAMO!!!
